Alone (2020)
No good ... insult to our intelligence
One of the dumbest movies I've seen in a long time. It has all the predictability and stupidity of a B horror movie without the horror. You are left with nothing but idiocy for the sake of idiocy.
Its like that spoof commercial where those kids are being chased by an axe murderer and decide to hide in the old shed rather than escape in the car... except a full length movie that they expect you to take seriously.
I couldn't get all the way through it but I don't need to see the end to know how it ends and there is nothing interesting about any of it. The reason I watched it is because I like this kind of story and even if made with 50% effort then it'll be at least watchable... not this one.
Violent Night (2022)
Better than expected but...
Too long! It's just too long ... why they let this thing drag out that long is a mystery. You will totally check out the last 30 minutes if you get through them at all.
It does have a bit of a Die Hard feel like others have mentioned. Lots of Christmas references which I appreciate in a Christmas movie.
The indifferent, irreverent Santa theme is a bit old for me but they at least put a new spin on it. The age old Christmas message is still there along with all the bloody carnage and profanity! Haha. It's not a family movie by any stretch but I don't think it was marketed that way.
May primary complaint is the length of it ... it's actually still playing as I write this... totally checked out !
Other than that I liked it 😄
Girl from Nowhere (2018)
Kitty Chicha is a force of her own!
This is not the style of show I would normally go for and I haven't watched much Thai film but this series has something special that cannot be denied... Kitty Chicha. And by the way ... that's all it needs to keep you watching episode after episode!
She is absolutely mesmerizing! You cannot take your eyes off of her. The second person I'd credit is the person that cast her in the role. I don't mean to minimize the talent or effort of anyone else but you could have her walk around reading the phone book and it would be binge worthy tv !
Few people on the planet possess this kind of intangible appeal... it's really hard to even describe what it is but she has it in spades.
I don't care what they do for season 3... it really doesn't matter as long as she's in it I'll watch.
The Curious Case of Natalia Grace (2023)
Very crazy story ... decent documentary!
I agree with the 7 rating. It could have been better and certain parts were handled very clumsily in my opinion. Some footage was used more than once as to provide filler in spots. They raised questions that they never even attempted to answer or even cover at all. It was definitely drawn out and then ended very abruptly leaving the viewer with more questions than they started with.
Watching this on HBO Max adds a final bit of frustration by minimizing the screen at the very end (to advertise other shows you may want to watch next) making the words almost impossible read.
Overall I did enjoy it as the story itself is extremely captivating.
I also agree with all the people dissing Michael's poor acting performance throughout the series. Although he is not payed by an actor as some have claimed.
Candy (2022)
Well done in spite of the poor setting
Not sure why they decided to film this in Georgia rather than Texas where it happened. The scenery was so obviously wrong for the story that I was always being distracted by the tall pine trees and thick wooded areas.
Very solid performances by the entire cast especially Biel. Excellent casting and actors made to look very much like the actual people in most cases. I was watching this simultaneously with the other show telling the same story on HBO Max which was very interesting to see the differences and similarities in the story telling. Ultimately I thought the other one was a tad better maybe because it was filmed near the actual location of which made it more authentic to me.
The Black Phone (2021)
Doesn't live up to its potential
I thought Ethan Hawke was great although he's really not in it much.
The problem is that they make it impossible to suspend your disbelief... here are a few examples why:
1. The police are looking for a black van in a small town yet this guy is still driving around kidnapping kids in broad daylight...
2. The dopey brother lives in the house and is obsessed with solving the case ... that's right it all takes place in the same house he is living including the pad lock on the front door and Ethan hawk not even trying to hide what's going on in the basement
3. The kid finally escapes and gets a decent head start out the door but predictably runs down the lighted street until he caught again
There are others but these were the three that bothered me the most ... a 4 is all I could give it.
Ju-on: Origins (2020)
Poor quality all around
I thought this was very sub-par. Poor writing, directing, acting and editing. Very amateurish.
I know that the English voiceovers don't help but this one never had a chance. This type of show is right up my alley but I couldn't even get through this one. It's like kids from the neighborhood decided to make a show.
Murder Among the Mormons (2021)
Very well done...
I enjoyed this quite a bit. Such a fascinating story... I'm glad they took their time telling it.
My only complaint would be that they glossed over his other forgeries that are even more impressive than the Mormon documents. Most notably the Emily Dickinson poem that passed as authentic. There is a great book called The Poet and the Murderer that tells the Mark Hofmann story and begins with the Emily Dickinson piece. If you want to get deeper into this story I highly recommend that book.
Strokes of Genius (2018)
Best documentary I've seen. Amazing story.
Probably the best documentary I've ever seen. I've been following these two players and their rivalry throughout their entire careers. The commentary is spot on and the whole thing is put into perspective. Even though I watched the match live at the time I found myself on the edge of my seat believing that Federer might just pull this out after all.
The best part is that the story is ongoing and the film recounts each players career since the 2008 final all the way up to current. As I write this review Wimbledon 2018 is in progress and the two players ranked 1 and 2 are Rafa and Roger ... a rematch 10 years later almost seems inevitable. I can't wait to see how this story ends.
Trump: An American Dream (2017)
Typical hit piece.
This is no documentary, not by any stretch of the imagination.
They interviewed anyone that would say negative things about Trump. Not one positive comment from anyone throughout the entire series.
Very sad and embarrassing for the people that made this.
Riverdale (2017)
Great idea and Could have been really good
I'm what seems to be common practice by Hollywood these days this show is loaded with homosexual content.
