Beerfest (2006)
Either you like this movie, or you like the New Yorker...
Are you the kind of person who finds philosophical discussions on the the nature of human existence fascinating? Or, perhaps, you are fond of a Provençal french wine paired with steak tartar? I've got bad news for you: YOU WILL NOT LIKE THIS MOVIE!!! However, if you are a red-blooded, beer-drinking, breast-loving American male, you HAVE to see the most laugh-out-loud film I've seen since, well, I can't remember when I've laughed this hard! Let me break down the movie for you (don't worry, I won't spoil it):
Plot: Wait a second... It's called Beerfest. If you can't figure out the plot, go back to your New Yorker...
Pluses: Beer-drinking; German accents; Farva if he was cool; Female nudity; Das Boot.
Minuses: Unrelenting bad reviews by people incapable of understanding the humor of the film.
Look: When you go to see Beerfest, you know what you're seeing. It's like Cheech and Chong or Half Baked for drinkers. Have a couple brews, get some nachos and popcorn, sit back, and realize what Barry does early in the movie: "I'm better when I'm drunk!"
Find Me Guilty (2006)
What a pleasant surprise...
I must admit, though I'm a fan of Vin Diesel, I can't exactly call him a good actor. Sure, his movies are entertaining, but...
This movie truly surprised me. It's about the trial of 20 New York Italian "gangstas" who get put on trial for various offenses, including conspiracy, robbery, and murder. Jackie, played by Diesel, decides to defend himself in lieu of paying $60,000 to a lawyer who did a good enough job to land him 30 years for coke.
Basically the story is drawn from court testimony for the dialogue, and Diesel delivers in scene after scene. As Jackie, he battles against a big time New York lawyer, fighting not only for his own freedom, but for the the reputation of him and his "fellas," a group of charming thugs that he grew up with.
The banter had me laughing out loud on many occasions, and I actually forgot I was watching a Vin Diesel movie (this is "The Pacifier"?) A MUST for not only Diesel fans, but anybody who wants a very solid, entertaining, and funny movie.
Hot to Trot (1988)
Nothing like a talking horse...
When is any movie involving a talking animal bad...if you're stoned!! I don't smoke anymore, but a re-watching of this movie might make me break out the ol' hooka... And who doesn't wish they had a horse to give them stock advice?
John Candy is always funny (well, almost always, at least), and this movie comes near the end of what I would consider his prime. And Bobcat, while (as mentioned) annoying at times, has, like a fine wine, gotten better with age.
It's a difficult find, don't even bother looking at Blockbuster, but if you can find it, roll a fat one, sit back, and enjoy what comes close to the stupidest wide release of all time...
