I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell (2009)
Not a comedy and Tucker Max is an Ahole (in this movie)
Not a comedy - nothing like how it is sold by the trailer. Nothing like 'The Wedding Crashers' or 'The hangover'. Not a chance in hell of repeating their success. If the movie character Tucker Max is a reflection of the author then he really should get into therapy - not funny, nor a good writer. Read some comments about good dialogue - absolutely not - sub, sub, sub kevin smith, even more sub-level Tarantino. Not even the type of dialogue that you wish yo';d said, it's just not good. The author seems to think that portraying himself as an ahole pushes the envelope and displays something or other - not so - this was achieved so much better by Campbell Scott in Roger the Dodger. The problem with this movie is - it's just not that good - derivative without adding anything, an anemic copy of much better movies. In fact the only relatively decent scene's are when the Tucker character is off the screen. This isn't so bad it's good - it comes across as a waste of time and talent. the vote of 3 is for the actors (not the one playing Tucker) who are pretty good (and badly served by mediocre scripting).
Colin (2008)
Not as original or good as reviewers keep saying
Just to clear up two points that are repeated ad infinitum: 1 - it's not the first zombie movie shown from the zombies POV. 2 - it's not the first zombie movie to make the zombie empathetic.
Both these points were first done by George Romero. In 'Land of the Dead' one of the core story lines was zombies recognizing they were being attacked and moving towards the human settlement. Again in 'Land of the Dead', and also 'Dawn...' and 'Day of the Dead' there was a recognisably empathic portrayal of the pilot in 'Dawn'(when he turned) and Bub in 'Day'.
There's no doubt that 'Colin' is well done if the statements about the budget are correct - there are some very good aspects to the movie: the soundtrack/score; some of the make up and effects; some the acting.
But this movie is really an extended student film, the cinematography is awful, the editing is okay as long as there is no more than 1 or 2 actors in scene, any more than that and it's very difficult to work out what's going on.
Not to denigrate the efforts of the director, cast and crew - but this is an idea of a movie and should be seen almost as a showreel than a finished product.
Spring Breakdown (2009)
Awful and Unfunny movie
How can a movie with Amy, Posey and Raechel have NOTHING funny in it? Believe it or not 'House Bunny' did this better and funnier. Hopefully the principals had a good holiday and got some money - this movie is an embarrassment to all of them. It is a cliché from beginning to end. Clichés can work well with a script, or at least an idea. This movie does nothing but use cliché after cliché rather than ideas or script. It uses the preexisting persona's of the actresses rather than develop characters. Bad, sad, and rubbish. Now I apparently have to have ten lines of text for a comment. Really? Why? As an IT ops manager this is another example of sloppy coding.
The Last Man on Earth (1964)
This film is amateurish rubbish
I have read the original novel (RIchard Matheson's 'I am Legend') several times, and the Charlton Heston remake (The Omega Man) is one of my all time favourite films. But this film is awful - the acting is outrageously bad, with Vincent Price as the only native English speaker, and overacting severely since he really has no-one to act against. The 'creepy'scenes of empty streets look like they were filmed at 5 am on a Sunday morning in Ibiza. The direction and dialogue are, needless to say, cheap and terrible, and to compare (as one person did) 'Night of the Living Dead' to this is ridiculous. Several very good and intelligent (and cheap) b&w horrors were made in sixties ('Village of the Damned', 'Children of the Damned' etc) - this is NOT one of them and it's only worth a look if you want to see how bad Italian cheapo's were prior to 'A Fistful of Dollars'.
