Por Thozhil (2023)
Good crime thriller
SPOILERS.
Another mystery crime thriller from Tamil cinema. Different dish, same taste.
Direction: It was good, nothing out of the ordinary or out of place.
Acting: Main protagonists and one villain acted very well, other villain was okay.
Story: As it is with mystery thrillers, the culprit is always someone far fetched and unexpected. He has his own reasons and stories for the motive, which again makes it less personal for other cast of the film. It is same old formula that we saw in Ratchasan and again an creepy guy is the villain here. It could have been less draggy in the end, but they decided to go an extra step and make it more complicated than needed.
In the end it is a good mystery crime thriller to watch.
Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two (2023)
No momentum, dry and lazy.
Don't watch in theatre, and certainly not with 4DX.
Screenplay - worst, no momentum. There is no emotional connection from one scene to another. Anything is happening without any context. The only screenplay that is understandable is with Nandini and Aditya and they have very little screen time.
Story - Well I don't know the original story but this one is not satisfactory.
Acting - Vikram was good, but not much screen time. None of the characters are explored to their full potential. All of them have the same note from start to finish.
Music - I don't remember any songs in the movie.
Direction - Mani Ratnam is out of touch with the craft.
Vadhandhi: The Fable of Velonie (2022)
Gripping
One thing for sure, it is a must watch.
Starting with the screenplay, it has flashbacks and alternative stories in the middle to keep the mystery intact. It is executed well and does not cause you to scratch your head and wonder what the hell is happening.
Visual are also very good with colorful houses and green trees which makes the whole series look very polished. Cinematography is not extraordinary but gets the job done well.
Story is engaging until the very last episode. It certainly makes the series binge able. As it is with mysteries, the satisfaction of the knowing the truth in the end lies in how convincing it is. With this series, it is lacking in convincing and does not give you the expected satisfaction. But the suspense is still worthy of watching the whole series.
Also, throughout the whole series, there are deep changes happening in the protagonist's outlook towards things which provides many wise lessons.
Overall a good watch.
Mildred Pierce (1945)
Lessons to learn
Well it is a tragic story from the start, so major takeaway from it is a list of things not to do.
But all hope is not lost and there is a silver lining in the fact that everyone in the end gets what they deserve. And some deserve good, some bad and some worse.
Screenplay is well written, movie is well directed. Everyone has acted convincingly and it does not feel as if the story is forced upon us. Movie feels worth watching and not a waste of time.
Looking back on it, movie has a lot of wisdom to offer about life. How people choose the wrong way of loving and expecting love in a wrong way is well demonstrated here.
Overall a very good watch. Thanks.
