Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Not sure what this was
This is an obvious attempt to make money based purely on nostalgia. I was suckered in by it.
This movie didn't know what it wanted to be. Acting was terrible...even by Stallone standards. Storyline was thin. The movie tried to be serious, but it was impossible not to laugh.
The saving grace is it isn't long. The action at the end is fun, although I'm not sure that's what they were going for.
More than anything we left confused about how to feel. You want to be mad at wasting your money, yet the laughs were too good.
I'd advise against spending money on this simply because Hollywood should not be rewarded for this piece of crap. I love movies...just not this one.
It Chapter Two (2019)
Terrible remake
I need to start by saying I read the book. That said, I'm not always offended when movies chart their own course.
The changes in this remake didn't advance the story, but rather muddied the water. Political statements aside, much of what is in this movie is unnecessary.
There are lots...and I mean LOTS of f bombs. I'm no prude, but nobody I know curses this much.
Pennywise is quite scary at times. The characters are will played. The script is bad and the packing is bizarre. It isn't the characters fault the script was terrible.
Lots of pieces that either didn't fit or couldn't have possibly fit.
I will never watch this again...and I love watching movies over and over.
Shazam! (2019)
Meh...not bad, not great
I'm a big fan of comic book/superhero movies, so this was a must-see. It really felt long. There are plenty of ways the time could've been trimmed without destroying the plot. I don't want to give away any spoiler details of the movie, but the story was lame. I couldn't tell if they were going for young audience, adult, comedy, or action. It never really pulled any of those things off.
It seems disconnected from the other dc stuff lately. It would maybe fit with the older batman movies, but the current stuff is darker and more adult. I'm no professional, just know what I like and don't like. This was just ok. I'll never see it again, though.
Glass (2019)
Sorta good, sorta bad
I am a fan of Shayamalan. I even liked The Village. I didn't really like this movie or hate it. It had elements that entertained...like McAvoy's acting. I don't know if playing someone with multiple personalities is enjoyable for actors, but he NAILED IT! Bruce Willis is fairly forgettable. Samuel L. Jackson was somewhere between.
The beginning was pretty good. I was hooked by the building tension. There is some interesting camerawork. I think this is where Shayamalan shines. The slow burning tension that continues to build really draws you in and keeps you engaged. This is where it goes off the rails for me.
I'd say Shayamalan's twists are 50/50. When they work, they're great. When they miss, they pretty much derail the entire movie. This movie was a big miss for me.
My wife hadn't seen Unbreakable or Split. She liked this movie, so part of my opinion might be high expectations. The movie wasn't a waste of time, but I wish we would've chosen something else.
Aquaman (2018)
Very long, great FX, cheesy plot
This movie was really, really long. I checked my watch several times hoping it was about finished.
Visually the movie is good. The plot makes no sense. The acting is ok. It is just way too long.
The costumes are pure cheese. It was overall a mediocre experience.
The Grinch (2018)
OK, but feels unnecessary
Took the grandkids to this movie...they didn't think it was very good. It seems like something that was produced for the dollars it could make rather than a story that needed to be told.
The good: it was not very long. The colors are brilliant and visually stimulating. Max was remade with a little more of a fun personality.
The bad: Grinch somehow seemed wrong. I'm not sure if it was the voice, the artistic effects, or just a general un-Grinchiness. The story was a retelling that didn't need to be. The biggest negative is the feeling that this movie is forgettable.
I'm sure I'll never watch it again. I've watched the original about a billion times, and the Jim Carrey version nearly the same.
Bottom line...save your money and rent it later.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
Fun movie, but really long
Enjoyed this movie, but it is really long. As with most action movies, the storyline is less important than the action. The filming of the car chase scenes is fabulous.
There are lots of twists and turns. I felt a couple of past installments relied too much on using masks. I think this version did a great job with it.
I would've given this a 9 or 10 if it wasn't so long. I think 15 minutes could've easily been trimmed.
