Deniro plays the lunatic well

A loveable lunatic. At times there felt nothing enough context to understand his whole assassination. Guess it's hard to explain crazy. Found the prostitute and his relationship very endearing. Jodie Foster is so adaptable in every film... was most impressed by the authenticity of her character. Unexpected resolution with the pretty lady. Thumbs up.

Do the Twist

Something so hilariously wholesome about the dialogue in this film. Talk about travel, food, the offensiveness of a foot rub... but also full of violence, drugs, and some blood. Super realistic shots of Uma ODing stuck with me. This was an enjoyable film with a pretty plain and raw film style. Lots of long shots to witness the chemistry between characters. Cool soundtrack too.

Awesome

Absolutely adored Paul Newman! This movie deserved all 4 oscars. Had the pleasure of rewatching this movie in the theatre. Such a great Western! The chemistry between criminals is so entertaining. Also enjoyed the sepiatone. Would recommend this action packed flick.

Aren't we all afraid of becoming our mother?

A real Freudian nightmare. The suspense of Marion's chase, the shower scene, the emotion filled eyes, the surreal house on the hill... I feel that Hitchcock mastered a lot of tone and implicit character dynamic just through camera angles. The last scene is awesome, when Lila discovers Norman's crazy secret.

LOVE these two together...

Such an endearing chemistry between Bogart and Hepburn. Romantic in less conventional ways, such as the scene where the pair work together to weld the underside of the boat. Bogart is totally hilarious as the drunken antihero. Hepburns quick transformation from prim and proper woman to a get it done, lusty, down and dirty companion is highly amusing. Cool jungle scenery as well.

Trouble in Paradise

Beautiful black & white cinematography, character chemistry, and scripting. Interesting to see a relatively young Hollywood's cynical self reflection. Guest appearance by Buster Keaton is a treat. Would recommend.

Fantastic Fantasia

The detail is amazing! This move is total rapture. Each segment moves you in a new way. By the end of the film you feel as if you have traveled. I love this mish mash of animation and classical stories, music, and mythology. Somehow, even in "The Sorcerers Apprentice" the cartooning compliments the serious song and message more poignantly than say a more classic rendition. The imagination and quality art are in my opinion unparalleled in any other Disney film before or since. A must watch for anyone.

The Women (1939)

Train to Reno

Very witty and well scripted film. I was impressed by each characters distinct and colorful personality. Joan Crawford may have been obnoxious at times but I also enjoyed her shrewdness. All along there were lines that foreshadowed Mary Haines regretting her divorce... which maybe true but the "back to your senses" line personally stung. The message that women have to be everything beautiful, rich, sophisticated, elegant, stylish, cunning, competitive, on and on... for the ultimate prize of a husband was definitely a concept I struggled to accept. That being said, I felt it was quite edgy to portray so many different responses to divorce. Although our main character ultimately runs back to her beau, along with some of her friends, others are liberated by becoming free and single women. The fashion show scene was absolutely amazing... the props, the stage, the outfits, and the technicolor!

Nazis - Don't Make Good Dogsitters
17 October 2019
I enjoyed the idea of this grand story playing out in a small New England town with unsuspecting people. When Loretta Young finds out her husband is a Nazi, she can barely even form the word. Nat-Zee!? Even though she is naive, and meant to be "normal", it bothered me how one dimensional she was. Small potatoes aside, I thought the film was well done. The dialogue was laconic, and served the seriousness of the topic. The footage of the holocaust reminded both the viewer and Mary of how truly evil Professor Rankin is. Preferred this movie to Citizen Kane.

I'll follow Molly if I Have to See This Again

Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to like this "comedy" I really did. An exciting enough story, a career driven woman ultimately swayed by the excitement and candor of Cary, and enough witty dialogue to fill a season of Gilmore Girls----but I didn't. I really really didn't. It was a headache to watch. An egotistical nightmare. A jibber jabbery mess. Totally detached from reason. I was so strongly unattracted to this film that I fought to watch it through. The case of Earl Williams was beyond confusing. The ill mannered newspaper men a pain to watch. The sudden and inane suicide attempt. It was all just so... BAD! This was a manic episode that I need to unwind from. Far too few laughs were had for this many words. Big thumbs down.

Baby Face (1933)

One Flutter of Lily's Lashes...

And you're in love! Or at least that is how easy she made it seem. Though sex was implicit throughout, much more impressive and subtle ploys were the tools of this hard as nails leading lady. Where some films would exploit this for smut appeal-Baby Face managed to keep you respecting, admiring, and empathizing with Stanwyck the whole way through. The lack of true love in her life, her need to survive, and the cool and rational philosophy of Nietzsche drive her man-eating upward mobility. She shares her wealth and home with the one kind person she knows, Chico, and keeps in touch with Mr. Cragg all throughout. Once she finds true love, she easily resigns her wealth in favor of it, proving once and for all her goodness. I loved her outfits, her fantastic and frank attitude, and the pace of the movie.

Dracula (1931)

More a Play than a Film
6 October 2019
I was less than impressed with this film. It is a good story that wasn't executed nearly to its potential. Sometimes the absence of dialogue enhances the little that is said, but sometimes it just is lacking. There were too few effects to add to the supernatural elements of vampire nature... no scenes of wolves... very kitschy bats... not even a drop of blood. It was largely underwhelming. Van Helming and Dracula were played well, but I expected a less bizarre and comical looking vampire. I thought Dracula's wives would have benefited the movie if they had a larger part. All in all, this erred on the side of theatrical. Things were described-not shown-and the acting was over the top dramatic. Some positives: I loved the bright, wide eyes and the light and camera work used to illuminate faces. The best performance in my opinion was Mr. Renfield!

The Kid makes Pancakes

Really enjoyed this film. It had a tremendous amount of heart and creativity. The plot was tidy, believable, and interesting. There was great chemistry between the kid and Chaplin, and every moment brought either a smile to my face or a tear to my eye. I especially enjoyed the theatrical liberties taken during "Dreamland" which tickled my fancy with a feather! It was beyond adorable, and the effects impressive for the time. Would watch again.

A Paradigm of Vulgarity and Sophistication
18 September 2019
With no special effects, no color, and only four characters... this film engrosses. A sweaty drunken nightmare. Witty, self destructing madness. Intellectual and sadistic. The character complexity keeps you on your toes...waiting and hoping for the redemption of Burt and Taylor...but no happy ending here. Watcher beware: Resolute in their misery, the company is you.

"Once a month, Martha. I've gotten used to it. Once a month, and we get Misunderstood Martha, the goodhearted girl underneath the barnacles. The little miss that the touch of kindness will bring to bloom again. And I believed it more times than I'd like to admit because I don't like to think I'm that much of a sucker. But I don't believe you, I just don't believe you! There is no moment, there is NO moment any more when we could come together."

Growls Abound
15 September 2019
I really enjoyed this film. To me, the message was this: How we each deal with our humanity is different, but born of the same shortcomings (i.e. fear, ignorance, etc). Less realistic aspects of the movie and any technical critiques fade away when a story is as rich in sentiment. There is some clumsy scripting and chemistry amongst characters... but it could also be interpreted as an intentional awkwardness to highlight the cultural divide between Kowalski and his Hmong neighbors. It was refreshing to see an intimate portrayal of someone that our politically correct and morally righteous modern day world would otherwise not tell the tale of let alone allow to be the hero. The non-recognizable actors added an authenticity to the struggling, lower middle class families they were meant to represent. Clint Eastwood's character, although not at all like myself on the exterior, was very relatable. To me he was a person standing outside of the absurdity of it all and struggling to find sense and happiness. Some of the more powerful moments could have had longer screen time, such as the return of Sue. All in all it was an original and worthwhile film that I would recommend to others.
