Veronica Mars (2004)
Genius...absolutely genius
I watched this show live a couple years ago, and I don't know if I appreciated it enough. Watching these three seasons again, I realize that this show is pure genius. The writing is witty and hilarious, and the acting is just phenomenal, especially from Jason Dohring as bad-boy Logan and Kristen Bell as the title character. Like any show, it had its ups and downs, but I dare anyone to watch the first season, chronologically, and deny that it was the most complex and beautiful mysteries ever created. We Veronica fans were devastated over this show's cancellation, but let's cross our fingers for the movie that Rob Thomas promised us! Once again: this show is genius. You don't have to be a kid who watches the CW to appreciate it.
Gone with the Wind (1939)
a flawless classic...
I was thrilled to see Gone With the Wind in the Top 250, but then I was shocked to see that it was somewhere in the 170s. Having seen most of the movies in the Top 250, I can safely say that Gone with the Wind belongs in the top 10, if not in the top 5 or 3. It is a classic, and 70 years later I feel that it has not aged the slightest bit. Modern movies with their flashy special effects will never equal the subtle emotion and vivid storyline of Gone with the Wind. The acting is superb, especially Hattie McDaniel's convincing portrayal of Mammy, Olivia DeHavilland as the compassionate and reserved Melanie, and of course, Vivien Leigh's emotional and brilliant Scarlett O'Hara. The bottom line? Watch this movie, and watch it again. When you have, and you haved loved it (as I am sure you will) come and rate it on IMDb, and maybe it can get the ranking it deserves.
The Sound of Music (1965)
Why is this not on the top 250?
Why on earth is the Sound of Music not on IMDb's top movie list of all time? With cute but not amazing movies like Toy Story and The Incredibles taking up space on the top 250, I am stumped as to why The Sound of Music did not qualify.
Beautiful songs, heartfelt acting, and a great storyline. I try hard to find some fault or other with this lovely piece of filming, but cannot. Julie Andrews does what I consider to be her best ever work. And those children, who can possibly forget them?
Please people, do yourselves a favor. Watch this movie, and watch it again. Never forget it, and do not place silly movies above it.
In the Mix (2005)
OK...I'm sorry, this movie is just plain BAD
Let me just say that I was surprised when I saw "In the Mix" settling down in the Bottom 100. Surprised, but not in a bad way. I'm just glad that people see this movie as what it is, and not "how famous Usher is" or "how good we WISH this movie was"
Because, to put it bluntly, I went in the theater expecting junk, and junk is what I got. I don't think that there is anyone out there who expected great things from Usher, but I most certainly did not expect the worst movie that I have ever seen.
So, let's go over why this movie was so bad. Firstly, the acting is quite dreadful. Usher acts like a robot, and sometimes almost forgets to show emotion. Emmanuelle Chriqui is not half bad, and neither is the supporting cast, but Usher's artificial acting spoils all of their efforts. The plot is nothing original, but nothing incredibly awful. With some different acting, hey, I might actually be able to sit through 95 minutes of it without getting close to crying at the pathetic attempt at a movie.
So, here's what I recommend:
Don't watch the movie at all (unless you're one of those people who try to watch really bad movies just to see how bad they are)
If you MUST watch it, wait for it to come out on DVD, and rent it. Or wait for a stupid friend of yours to buy it, and borrow it. Make sure that you do not waste any money on this piece of junk. If you want what's best for you, spare yourself, and don't watch it at all.
That's So Raven (2003)
Not the typical Disney tween show
That's So Raven is NOT the next "Lizzie McGuire" or "Even Stevens" on the Disney Channel. It is a unique show about a psychic teenager who has visions of the future. However, she usually misinterprets these, and drags her two friends, Chelsea and Eddie, into trouble. It stars talented Raven-Symone (the Cosby Show)and many promising supporting actors, the best of which are Chelsea (Anneliese Van Der Pol) and Raven's little brother Corey (Kyle Massey). Kids from the ages of 5-12 will definitely be entertained, but adults will also find "Raven" interesting and original. There is nothing inappropriate, so parents can be sure that their children will have a good time.
Kangaroo Jack (2003)
Not worth your time or money
The only positive that can be said about this movie is that it is only 86 minutes, but possibly the most boring 86 minutes of your life. Kangaroo Jack is dull and predictable, and has awful acting as well. This is the story of two men who go to Australia to give a man working with their father a large sum of money. Unfortunately, this money is placed in a jacket that is stolen by a kangaroo. The movie is about how they try to find the kangaroo. This movie drags along seemingly endlessly, although there are a few laughs. Do not waste your time on Kangaroo Jack, it is not worth the precious 86 minutes. I am not rating it a 1, because there is some humor in this movie, and there are definitely worse movies out there.
La marche de l'empereur (2005)
A Wonderful Movie for the Whole Family
This is the beautiful story of a group of penguins living in Antarctica that make several long journeys to get to their breeding ground. It follows these penguins as they give birth to chicks and then bring them up. At the beginning this movie goes slowly, and young children may get bored, but as soon as you see the adorable penguin chicks, it will be hard to take your eyes off the screen. It is really touching to see these penguins walking 70-80 miles for the sake of their children, bearing extreme temperatures. The whole family will find this entertaining, but young children may be disturbed by the pictures of dead penguins and hawks eating penguins. Overall, this is an amazing movie with remarkable footage, something that you won't want to miss.
