Babylon 5: The Lost Tales (2007)
A Brilliant Addition to an Ever-Growing Epic Series
Babylon 5 was an excellent series from start to finish. The Lost Tales continues that trend with morally and intellectually baffling story lines, even better special effects and exceptional acting. Woodward's performance of Galen is just as brilliantly mysterious and powerful as ever.
The first episode, which is very much a stand-alone story as it does have nothing to do with the rest of the series from what I can tell, is a brilliant religion-themed story with some very good writing that gets underway very quickly and keeps the viewer gripped all the way through.
The second story is, in my opinion, quite a bit better than the first, even considering how good that was. It gives us a little more insight into the character of Galen, as well as a nice mention of G'Kar and Franklin, in memory of the two late actors who played them (Katsulas and Biggs).
The only shortcoming of these two stories is their lack of length; they did seem a bit crammed into 35 minutes and would have benefited from more time. I can't wait to see more additions to the series!
A Sound of Thunder (2005)
This is nowhere as bad as it's cracked up to be
This film is nowhere near as bad as some reviews would suggest. The acting was on the whole fine, some of the special effects where a bit lacking but as far as I'm concerned it really doesn't make that much difference. The premise is very good barring a few scientific errors, some of which could easily be passed off as errors by the characters themselves. The film had a few ideas in it scientifically that I hadn't met before and a few more I'd never seen in a film before. All in all I'd give it 7/10 because it's by no means excellent but it certainly isn't bad. Watch with an open mind, don't set out to be overly critical and it will keep you entertained.
Phoenix (1995)
Beat my Expectations
When I first discovered this film on a DVD that came free with a newspaper, my initial thoughts were a little negative. It didn't look like it would be particularly good, although I was drawn by the name of William Sanderson who I had seen in Babylon 5 and thought was very good in that.
So after five months, I picked up the DVD and began watching with very low expectations of the film itself. I was met by a film with some excellent acting, quality writing, a gripping plot and frequent action. The only aspect of the film that disappointed me was the special effects, which looked more like they came from 1965 than 1995. Besides that an excellent film with excellent qualities and a truly appalling sequel that I prefer to pretend doesn't exist.
Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers: To Live and Die in Starlight (2002)
Very good, definitely should have been a series
This film contains some very good dialogue, excellent special effects and a fine performance from the late Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar. However one particular scene in the film lets it all down- the way in which the Liandra fires its weapons in battle. The idea of someone holographically floating in space and punching and kicking to fire weapons is somewhat out of place in an otherwise excellent addition to the Babylon 5 universe.
The performance of all the actors in this film is good in my opinion. The film should in my opinion definitely have been made into a series and the only reason it didn't attract large enough audiences was its being shown alongside a very popular and one-off football game, which was the last thing it needed.
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
its really good!
Nemesis definitely beats star trek: insurrection and in my personal opinion beats all of deep space nine also. It is an excellent film, with fantastic visual effects, a gripping plot and an emotional ending. The acting is a good as always, and the dark mood of the film makes it equal in brilliance to star trek: first contact. As with any film it has a few drawbacks, such as when picard stabs shinzon and he moves himself down the large metal pole through which he has been stabbed, resulting in the entire cinema audience going 'ugh' simultaneously, but none the less the film is a credit to the star trek franchiser and I just hope they make another brilliant film out of the series.
