Reckoning (2019)
No payoff
I'm really wondering about the many positive reviews of this mini-series whodunit. The acting is OK, the scenery's beautiful ( at least partly filmed in my old home, Sonoma County, CA), but the story, completely unbelievable. I'm only half way through, but I can already tell there is not going to be a good, satisfying nding to this muddled mess.
Arrow (2012)
An enjoyable show, but...
This series is about a superhero who, mostly, uses his wits, physical agility and a bow and arrow to fight crime in his home town. The lead actor, who plays Oliver, is good looking and has a certain charm, when he's not brooding over not having a life. I really enjoyed the first two seasons. There is a back story, which is shown in flashbacks. At the end of the second season there's a sweet surprise that I didn't see coming. However, by the third season, it's as if the writers all sat around going "what if this happens, then we could have this happen" with each idea more outlandish than the last. I'm in my 70's and have really enjoyed the chemistry between the actors and the humor in this, usually serious show. But, I think, I'm done with it now. It's just gotten too weird and the humor has all but disappeared.
These Foolish Things (2006)
Not a fan
Let me start by saying, I love British movies and TV shows. I've rarely seen one that I didn't like. This movie just didn't hold my interest, at all. First, as a costume designer for community theater for ov thirty years, I'm a huge fan of period pieces. The costumes in this movie seemed to be representative of the late 1930's, however, I just couldn't get over the character of Robin's hair. All of the other men had 1930's hair and Robin looked like a 2010 surfer dude. I felt the story was boring and just wasn't moving forward fast enough for me. The actors were bland, except for Douglas and Garsten Don't waste your time on this one.
The Blacklist (2013)
A good series but....
If the writer's intention was to make the viewer despise the "heroine" in this show, they have done an excellent job.
I usually stay away from shows that glorify criminals and violence, but when I saw that James Spader was the star of this show I had to check it out. I was hooked immediately . But the characters of Elizabeth and Tom are something else. And they portray the FBI as bumbling idiots. Elizabeth especially is always making rookie mistakes, I guess, so Red can come and save her.
I've enjoyed the show, as purely escapist entertainment, and for Spader. But if you're looking for a series about a strong , confident woman who can let people own their own secrets, this is not the show for you.
