Hard-to-watch cautionary tale
22 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was hard to watch, partly because I'm claustrophobic but also because it's horribly slow. Writing, directing, and acting were all second-rate at best, and the dreams were hokey. I felt sorry for John but even more so for his wife and children. If he'd used his head, he wouldn't have died. Spelunkers should watch this movie as a lesson about what NOT to do. It's good to know that the cave was sealed. At least no one else will die there. I don't really consider that a spoiler because the title makes it clear that the movie represents his LAST descent. We all knew he was going to die before we watched it.

When did "empathy" become a four-letter word?
22 August 2022
THIS! YES! The police occupation still has a very long way to go in its training and response to our nation's mental health crisis, but it's great to see the SAPD taking baby steps in the right direction. It's okay to care and to feel another's pain, and we owe it to the citizens of the communities we "serve and protect" to do better. And we must always remember that "serve" comes first. If we are unwilling or unable to do that, we need to find other lines of work that don't require empathy and compassion.

Surprise! Not history!
19 August 2022
If you need a little mindless diversion, this show might provide it. It was okay-very average. If you want a history lesson, you're looking in the wrong place.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, National Treasure, Mission Impossible - and Antonio Banderas being Antonio Banderas. Doesn't anyone have any new ideas? Some fun moments here and there, but nothing new. 2.5 stars.

S - L - O - W!

I expected to like this movie. I did not. It is the slowest, most excruciatingly boring movie I have ever seen in my life. Watch only as a cure for insomnia.

Should have stopped at two seasons
12 July 2022
Season One was very good, and Season Two was okay. But the third season went completely off the rails-just a bunch of sociopaths killing each other. The "good" guys and gals were only slightly less evil than the "bad" ones. It's inherently difficult to root for criminals-murderers at that.

Really slow
25 May 2022
Horribly boring and unrealistic. Annoying characters. By the halfway point, I was rooting for the bad guy. Not really horror and hardly a "thriller." Can't recommend this snoozer.

Meh - slow & disappointing
17 April 2022
I know this is the type of movie that's supposed to be a bit slow, but this one was entirely too slow and left me wanting. It wasn't a complete waste of time, but I can't really recommend it either. I wish I'd spent that hour and a half with a good book. My bad.

Meh - not bad
13 March 2022
This series was okay. The acting was mostly good, and the story was compelling enough to keep watching. However, there was more disbelief than I could suspend. And the writing got really loose in the second half. Still, I'm not sorry I watched it. It's better than a lot of shows we waste time on these days. Now-back to my books.

25 minutes of torture
31 December 2021
I gave up after twenty-five minutes of excruciating boredom. Awful acting. Awful directing. Horribly unrealistic. And a main character for whom I couldn't muster much sympathy. I just couldn't waste any more time waiting to see if it got better. The Alberta scenery was the only bright spot, but not even the Canadian Rockies were enough to keep me watching.

Slow to Start, Great Finish
28 December 2021
To be frank, the movie was quite tedious to start but finished strongly. There were no big surprises, but the performances were strong. Despite the slow start, it was an entertaining movie, but better editing could have made it great. (Fair warning: Some graphic gore!)

Books are Better
21 December 2021
If you have read the Longmire series of novels, you're likely to be disappointed. To be clear, the series is a LOT different. I'm sure that's not a big surprise to any reader, but this series is a stand-alone that uses elements of the books. The stories and the overarching threads that hold them together are only loosely based on the books. That said, I watched all episodes before reading any of the books, and now-after reading all the novels to date-I'm rewatching the series. This has enabled me to enjoy the book series and the TV series each in its own right. The TV writers did the best they could to create a compelling series in their medium, and they mostly succeeded. I'm just glad that I watched the TV series first. I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much if I'd been a faithful reader of the books first. If you've read the books and are considering the TV show, go ahead and watch it. I certainly recommend it. But go into it with realistic expectations. A TV show isn't a book, and even the best made-for-TV adaptation can never hold up to quality novels. Again, this show is "based on" the Walt Longmire stories and characters, but it's a great deal different. The New Mexico shooting locations are just the start of it.

Worth Watching
21 December 2021
Interesting. Definitely worth watching for William Shatner and Star Trek fans. But a little slow and anticlimactic, and somewhat disappointing overall. Once is enough.

B-O-R-I-N-G!

This story wasn't compelling. It was painfully slow, difficult to finish, and not really very scary. I wasn't sure that I would make it out alive. I can't recommend it.

Glad it ended when it did

First season was better than expected. Second season was pretty bad-tough to finish. A third season would have ruined it entirely. Thankfully they put it out of its misery. Overall: average.

Disappointing
25 September 2021
A movie with three Oscar-winning actors can't miss, right? Wrong! Very disappointing movie. Poor writing. Poor directing. And not the best acting. In particular, Rami Malek was awful. Then again, his character stunk, and one aspect of the plot that involved his character was completely unbelievable. I won't ever suffer through this movie again, and I certainly can't recommend it.

Not altogether awful, but brutally slow. Not a long movie-it just seemed that way. It had some potential but wasn't executed well. Very dark, but life is like that sometimes. Not sorry I watched it but won't watch it again.

Really awful
20 August 2021
I can deal with suspending disbelief to a reasonable degree, but this story is wholly implausible-and brutally slow for an "action" movie. It took me three tries to finish it, and I'm ashamed that I did. Two big thumbs down!

Pretty Bad
3 July 2021
Across the board (writing, directing, acting, continuity) this movie is pretty bad, and it requires way too much suspension of disbelief. Nevertheless, I forced myself to stick with it till the end. Bad decision.

Somewhat Disappointing
1 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was a good production overall and very well directed and acted. The plot was compelling, and it definitely held my interest. I looked forward to each episode. Nevertheless, I found it weak in two areas. First, the plot at times required too much suspension of disbelief-e.g., when Mare wasn't summarily fired and prosecuted for planting evidence, and when she was blatantly, in-your-face insubordinate for staying on the case while suspended. Secondly, Mare was a generally unpleasant person and only started to become somewhat likable near the end. And she was a bad, makes-her-own-rules cop. Yes, I suppose she had her reasons for being that way, but the excuses and rationalizations only go so far. All things considered, this was a pretty decent story, albeit one that could have been better with more realism, or at least a more likable Mare.

Great ending!
21 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
These reviews are unrealistic and unfair. People are simply being unreasonable because Dany broke bad. Well, get over it! If you missed all the signs over the years, you weren't paying enough attention. Anyone with enough sense to track a bleeding elephant in snow should have seen it coming. As expected, she lost her noodle and got what she deserved. Everything else, including the mild surprises, was logical and satisfying-even the ending for Jon, which Tormund foretold. It was a near-perfect ending for a great show, all these absurd reviews notwithstanding. It couldn't have been much better.
