Resident Alien (2021– )
6/10
Pretty average and always has been, but still strangely watchable
18 April 2024
Really, this show has missed the mark significantly right from the start. Given the huge amount of 'fish out of water' comedy opportunities offered by an alien trying to fit into human society, it's surprisingly short on actual laughs. Most episodes you get a couple of fun moments, but it really ran out of ideas by season 2 and now is just coasting along, being more of a soap than a comedy.

The storylines are all over the place, some of the characters who used to be lovable have degraded into merely annoying, and you could write each episodes plot on the back of a business card, but its still a show I watch most weeks after I've run out of other, better shows.

Alan Tudyk is always entertaining though. And given the quality of other shows like La Brea, I guess I should be grateful for what we have gotten. Given that great shows like Raised by Wolves only got 2 seasons, and this one has 4, I can only assume its extremely cheap to produce and is still returning a profit.

Night Raiders (2021)

Just bad
16 August 2022
I give it 3 starts because it starts out ok, and visually it has a sort of a gritty look thats a bit like a chick centric version of Children of Men.

Unfortunately, that's about the high point. It descends from there in boring, talky moments, flails around with some rather hokey seeming 'tribal' stuff, and then ends with the stupidest and most illogical twist possible.

The only people rating this over say, 5, are only doing so because they are invested in the production for reasons other than film quality.

Poor attempt to recapture the success of 'Free Guy'
13 March 2022
Basically, its like a cut rate version of Free Guy, with poor plotting, some quite average acting from some actors, and some rather average special effects.

Add in all the sanitized violence (can't see someone not wearing a mask and uniform killed, can we?), and the fact there's surprisingly few truly funny bits, and its really quite mediocre.

Don't waste your time unless you really have nothing better to watch.

Generic, clumsy story
11 January 2022
The same old stuff we've seen so many times before in Marvel movies. Generic plot lines, characters acting like no actual person would ever do.

This one has a criminally underused Asian girl side kick, and nice special effects. That's about it. Nothing makes it memorable. Its basically another second tier, forgettable Marvel movie.

Don't Look Up (2021)

A bit slow in a few parts, but an excellent and fun movie that hits all the points it needs to
31 December 2021
Its really quite clever, and the acting is probably the most consistently best of any movie I've seen in 2021. EVERYONE turns in stellar performances.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I will say that one of the end scenes is one of the most heartfelt and real feeling scenes I've ever seen in any apocalypse movie.

It also does a great job skewering tech leaders, and the blind faith and adulation that they attract. Mark Rylance turns in an amazing performance as a character that is a mix of Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg.

It's really a rather beautiful study on fame, money, science, politics, and the truly important things in life. Far more valuable a movie than most of the other stuff that came out in '21.

Its terrible. Nothing ever happens.
19 November 2021
Just that. Its simply atrocious.

The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because it at least is better than La Brea or Y The Last Man.

I know we are suffering covid but it if the only good shows are going to be animated we should just embrace that rather than regurgitate stuff that people in the 60s wouldn't have swallowed.

Just a complete waste of time
22 September 2021
Its full of people doing unrealistic things, badly.

Theres really nothing likeable about it at all, just a procession of idiots doing idiot things, and then dying. You get more plot progression in a level of Left4Dead than you do in this entire show.

Pros? I guess the animation quality isn't terrible, nor are the sfx/voice acting.

Hard to believe something like this actually got made. You see fan made shows all the time on youtube that squeeze more plot into 10 minutes than this manages to do in an hour.

Its extremely rare for me to ever rate something 1 star, but this one gets that distinction. Its simply a complete waste of time. Save yourself 60 minutes of your life.

All style, no plot.
19 September 2021
Too thin and obvious to become the cult classic it desperately wants to be. Unfortunately, there is no real story, acting is average (apart from Cage and a few others), and surprisingly little action (and done surprisingly clumsily).

All the characters were sadly entirely forgettable, or completely unused, except for the samurai, The Governor, and Cage.

This one just proves that you can't throw a bunch of filters, 'crazy' wasteland characters, and sets into a movie, and have it come out well.

stylish, holds your attention, but ultimately, pretty boring
13 September 2021
Great acting by great actors, and interesting characters, but really, its quite slow and uneventful.

I can handle the lack of action, but it feels rather drawn out. If it had been kept about 30 minutes shorter I think it would have been a better movie.

Its not a patch on Reservoir Dogs IMHO, which is basically quite a similar movie in many ways.

Surprisingly entertaining
10 September 2021
Wasn't expecting much at all and was pleasantly surprised. It was nice to not be able to predict where the story was going. While its not Oscar winning acting and budget, there was enough grit and heart to hold my attention for all 6 episodes.

It does suffer a little from having quite a few characters who resemble each other a bit, so it can take a while to sort one group from the other.

Nothing you'd rave about, but solid storytelling.

Very entertaining
8 July 2021
It basically works by following a formula of showing tropey animated stuff, then subverting it, usually with extreme violence.

Because of this, it keeps you guessing, and it holds you well, with the exception of a few scenes which were more trope than subversion. There are also a few universe inconsistencies which mar it. However, those bits can easily overlooked considering the huge amount they get right.

Really a lot of fun. You'll know if its for you after finishing watching the first episode.

Ok but overrated
25 June 2021
The 'special' episodes are great (and TBH, carry the rest of the show), and I enjoyed the first season enough, but its a slow burn - nothing amazing.

Unfortunately, the second season seemed a bit lost and unnecessary. Everything is drawn out, and a plot about the 2 testers going/not going to Berkeley is extremely uninspired, yet takes up about 20% of the shows time.

I'd give the first season a 7/10 and the second a 6/10.

Not one thing thats good in it
21 June 2021
Terrible, really. The acting is atrocious in the most part, especially the boy, who reads his lines like its a school play. The plot is less than rudimentary and virtually anyone could write something better. The most laughable part are the two 'natives', one of which looks like he'd be more at home on an Aussie beach than prancing around in warpaint. Since I laughed in disbelief (rather similar to seeing 'Amy' the gorilla the first time in 'Congo') i gave this movie a very generous 2 stars.

I can't think of a single thing that made the experience worthwhile. Just give it a miss.

Enjoyable fun.
29 May 2021
Its about a 7.5 IMHO. Standard base story we've all seen many times before (in stuff like Perfect Weapon, etc), but with the whole 'got old' brand of humour thrown in. Anyone who knows any kung fu will recognize many of the things that are lampooned gently, but it never gets mean in its humour, instead being quite respectful with the treatment of its subject matter.

Casting and characters are good, fight scenes were entertaining, and generally it was well paced. Better than any of the last few Karate Kid movies.

An interesting ride
26 May 2021
I don't really want to give away too many plot points, as half the fun of the movie comes from subverting your expectations. It's a bit long and repetitive in points, but its generally stylish and its easy to forgive the few slow bits.

Statham plays his usual role very well, all the other actors are very decent, effects are good. The last 20 minutes is pretty riveting except for the last 5 minutes, which is a bit anti climatic.

Quite a few plot holes and suspend disbelief moments, but it manages to keep on trucking. Altogether a solid film of its genre.

No more than passing entertainment.
24 May 2021
It's watchable, the two main characters have ok chemistry, and there are a few entertaining enough scenes, but like the characters life, nothing ever really gets going.

Its unfortunate that the main character is quite unlikeable, especially since the other primary character of Pineapple is quite entertaining. Some more student revenge hijinks or anything to get them teaming up physically more would have been nice, and have opened the movie up to more plot possibilities.

A bit cliched and empty, but well made.

Leave your brain behind
23 May 2021
Unfortunately, this movie is extremely stupid. Within the first 2 minutes, you can see exactly what sort of ride you are in for.

The general stupidity is so strong there's really little point categorizing every bit of it. It's the sort of movie that makes Zombieland 2 look deep and meaningful.

The entire worst part of this movie is the daughter, who merrily runs around endangering everyone and never seems to give a damn. I'd happily have watched her die several times by the end of the flick.

On the plus side, acting and effects are good, and there are some decent cinematographic moments. Just don't expect anything great.

Quite enjoyable
23 May 2021
Plot wise its nothing you haven't seen before, hard man befriends troubled person. Acting is pretty decent, as are the fight scenes, which, while a bit unrealistic, are quite exciting.

Quite impressive since the main actor (who plays a good part) is apparently also the writer. Production quality is really very good.

I've seen far worse movies get higher ratings - I'd give it a 6.5 if that was possible.

Wasted opportunity
19 October 2020
This is one of those movies that unfortunately never get much better than the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately the lack of any real script kills it. It's like they had the decent idea 'lets make a movie about fat zombies', but unfortunately they had no scripting skills beyond that idea to actually use that concept much in the movie, or even wring a few decent jokes from it.

The best thing about it are the performances by a couple of the girls, although generally most of the actors are acceptable bar a couple who probably shouldn't be actors at all. Oh, also a few of of the 'commercials' and headlines were amusing.

It's just a shame more time wasn't spent thinking about the concept and how to make it work, because there were a couple of decent moments earlier on I enjoyed, and liked where I thought it was headed. But those turned out to be the high points of the whole thing.

Warning: Spoilers
I really liked the original B&T, although it shows its limitations on a rewatch all these years later. This however is very poor. There's really even less plot than the original movies, and Keanu looks like hes overdosed on botox.

What made the original ones fun was B&T going through time, having fun escapades in other times, and throwing historical figures into different times and having fun with how they handle it. In *this* movie all the historical figures are reduced to literal backing characters. There's very little if any humor that will make you laugh out loud. There *is* a robot that tries to act human (the actor does his best with what hes given), but it really misses the mark, quite possibly due to the fact that the robot looks identical to a man in a very very bad robot suit from a 50s sitcom. So really it just looks like a guy wearing a ridiculous robot frock acting like an idiot, and unfortunately not in a funny way.

As others have also pointed out, its also way too woke for its own good. I can only think of a single male character who was portrayed in any competent light, whereas the women are all people of competence and power. Virtually every character has been replaced by female versions. Even B&T get replaced in the end, by their daughters. (Spoiler) Turns out the fact that B&T had been working towards success for their entire lives wasn't important, as apparently their daughters, who have never even written a song previously, were really the ones going to save the universe after all (retconning the original movies, in a 'twist' so obvious its more a downward spiral). They do his by delivering the most insipid nonsense non song you've heard outside a malfunctioning elevator.

Even Death was both underutilized and strangely off in his portrayal, although his bass playing was probably the best of the 'music'. (spoiler) Discovering that B&T had a restraining order out on him was the only bit I found actually funny.

If you didn't pay anything for it, it would be about a 5, max. If you've wasted money on it you'll understand the two star rating.

Loses its way
31 July 2020
I actually quite liked it in many ways. The acting is pretty good. Ron Perlman is always awesome, and Malcolm McDowell is also great in the part of the old governor past his prime.

Where it really works well is in their characters interaction towards the end. There's a real sense of people with their own honor and ties of friendship who are at odds suddenly. Honor, blind commitment, and ideals of justice are all tested.

The problem with the movie as a whole is the plot falls apart after the first half, especially in the last 20 minutes. There are quite a few earlier scenes where I had to suspend disbelief as to how people would act in those situations, but the ending is pretty much unbelievable and tested that suspension too far.

Good acting and cinematography, but not enough plot ideas unfortunately to prevent the holes showing.

Moving story about different forms of love
30 June 2020
Rather charming and sad story. Principally an odd couple love story between a layabout waster and a dying teen, it portrays a dysfunctional family and friends trying to keep things together during Milla's decline. As such, the scenes between the parents, who, despite having obviously grown apart, still love and care for each other, are very well done. To this love is added the willd love Milla has for Moses, and the slow love that Moses feels for Milla as he starts to allow himself to feel.

The acting is excellent, with Mendelsohn, Scanlan and Wallace all delivering great performances. Its also extremely well scored. The conversation on the beach between Milla and her father is some of the most moving acting I've seen in a long time, despite hardly anything being said.

The vast majority of the movie is actually quite fun. There is really only about 5 truly sad minutes in the entire thing. That said, those are devastating.

Way better than I expected
27 April 2020
I was expecting your typical B level 'people being hunted as a game' movie, of which we all have probably seen far too many times. This one manages to stay fresh, by staying different and unpredictable. Its not overly long, or overly complicated (it feels like more could have been done towards the middle to flesh it out a little), but it manages to inject some contemporary humour and a sense of fun that it never loses. It's a bit like Cabin in the Woods in feel, so if you like that movie you'll probably like this one as well.

Those who have rated it down for political reasons have really missed the entire point. The movie's political side is more about how extremes on all political sides are harmful, which is hardly an inaccurate message, although of course unpalatable if you happen to be an extreme who expects all movies to conform to their personal beliefs.

Plot wise there are lots of holes but it never breaks the suspension of disbelief.

Good acting and pace, some actually funny black comedy scenes, and a kick ass main character make the whole thing some amusing fun that keeps you uncertain how its going to end right up till the last moment.

Falls short, but still fun.
22 April 2020
Rating this one a 7 simply because its different and I can't give a 6.5 (and am feeling generous).

It feels sort of like a high budget high school movie. Plot seems like they got high one night and thought 'lets make a whacky movie about a super cool guitar playing guy *with a samurai sword* who has to get to post apocalyptic Las Vegas'. And then did it.

The people he meets are interesting characters. In this respect, its sort of like 'The Warriors', but where he roams towards Vegas and meets different tribes.

There is virtually no acting involved unless its overacting (its one or the other), but I'm hoping that is because they are trying not to deliberately. And the kid is extremely annoying at parts. But it has some cool music and enjoyable fight scenes. Who can't enjoy a super cool guy cutting up bunches of people to music, in a post apocalyptic world?

It's a shame this wasn't given a bit more time and attention to plot, and to the musical score. I really liked the rock soundtrack, but I felt (especially in a scene or two towards the end) where having the antagonists music show would have made more sense.

A bit of improvement and polish and they could have had a new classic.

A formulistic action movie with way less action than needed to make up for its shortcomings
28 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The original Bad Boys was a great action movie. However, this one is just tired.

While the action scenes are well choreographed, they only make sense if you squint after having a lobotomy. I mean, a guy being held at gunpoint pulls out a knife, spins it around his finger to show off, then knifes the guy holding him at gunpoint, a move that literally takes at least 2 seconds, during which both the guy holding the gun and his bodyguards just stand there.

Unfortunately, thats pretty much one of the more believable action scenes, which abound with physics that 90's videogames do more convincingly. Don't get me started on the fact that neither of the two leads seem interested in catching the assassin with anything but bare hands, letting him escape by simply running off rather than shooting him, as you'd imagine you'd be inclined to do if you were a guy wanting revenge for being shot.

The problem is that the action scenes are sadly the best part of the entire movie. The rest of the movie is rather slow. We have old, fat Martin Lawrence holding babies, sitting in recliners, caring for the injured in hospital, attending weddings and funerals, and... that's about it. Add a few scenes where one tries to convince the other to get involved in solving the crimes, and that's about it.

While the final fight isn't too bad in terms of action, its still another example of unbelievable action filler. The final end scene is even less likely.

While there are occasional patches of the originals buddy charisma, they are few and far between, and the whole thing comes off as a movie that shouldn't have been made in the first place.

You can tell its not that good at all, simply by the number of 10/10 ratings you see on sites like this and others, always a sign that they spent more money on buying votes and gaming systems than on the script.

Save your money.
