House M.D. (2004)
What do you Americans think of Hugh Laurie? Have you seen his previous work?
I wondered what the Americans think of Hugh Laurie in the context of his previous work? I'm Australian but we get all the British stuff here. I watched House first purely because I wanted to see Hugh Laurie do something that wasn't comedy. Couldn't imagine what it would be like. You do get a hint of House if you've seen his Mr Palmer in Sense and Sensibility but it's almost surreal to watch him as House if you've seen him as the Georges in Blackadder or Bertie Wooster. He's absolutely brilliant as both. Once you've seen those you can flashes of them in House for example when he makes the face at Cuddy.
As I said I watched House originally to see what Hugh Laurie would be like but I've become a fan. It's great to see a character that just deals with what's really going on not all the peripheral stuff. Great writing. Can't wait for season two to come out on DVD.
A Map of the World (1999)
Poor characters well acted.
This movie has great promise but falls apart. The performances are excellent but what the actors had to work with is questionable. About a quarter of the way thru the movie the characters begin to behave in ways that are undeveloped, unexplained and unattached seemingly to the rest of the movie. It's almost as if they each start to act in a movie of their own. Weaver's character is particularly at fault. In addition there are events that are unexplained - one example of several is when the thing happens to Weaver with the black women it is never made clear how it happened. Maybe we don't need to be told and are expected to draw our own conclusions but why isn't her husband told? All up, very disappointing.
