Brazil (1985)
Unfortunate and messy attempt
If there would only be one word to describe Brazil, it would be "messy" and I do not like messy movies. But then again, that is the same exact reason why people like them.
Brazil is objectively a product of a unique mind. Throughout the story line and through every single detail in the movie, it is nearly impossible not to see the creativity. This creativity is demonstrated in a bold and significantly absurd way; which could be the only reason why it is so exciting for some, and unbearable for others.
One thing that stands out in this creativity madness is the constant mocking of bureaucracy, which was pretty much the only thing that made the movie watchable for me. The production in general is good and the construction of the dystopian world is sometimes interesting.
However, most of the movie is terribly boring. The boredom is normally not so important of a factor in movies, but this is a sci-fi movie in a dystopian world. Its instruments are solely based on the genre itself, so we do not have the option to say that sci-fi is only a tool for what the movie wants you to see. This situation is catastrophically ugly by itself and it can very well be the single reason to downgrade the movie to the depths of hell. Sci-fi movies does not have to be interesting for everyone, but it is supposed to be not boring by definition.
I think the experiment in this movie can be considered as a very unfortunate attempt to bring together art and science fiction. There probably are some ways to make it work, but even if there is, it does not change the fact that Brazil did a horrible job at it.
No Time to Die (2021)
All time time in the world, no time to meet expectations
Bond franchise has been taken to another level with Daniel Craig in it. Casino Royale was truly a masterpiece in so many aspects and it has set the standards to a high level for the other movies. So I get that it is hard to reach to those standards and live up to the expectations.
But, it feels like Craig's goodbye should not have been filled with immense amount of clichés and unnecessary story lines. The actual ending was really good and emotional, but it is hard to say the same for the movie overall.
Bond movies will always be enjoyable for those who does not have any emotional connections to the Bond movies. However, it is very easy to say that No Time To Die was disappointing, especially when you think about the place that it has in the whole franchise. It was also very sad to see Ana de Armas for such a small amount of time.
The Good Place (2016)
Masterpiece and more than a TV Show
The ethical dilemmas and complicated relationships are two of the most valuable aspects of life. It is very hard to imagine these two aspects coming together in a TV show, yet The Good Place is so extraordinary that it manages to not only bring these two together but it also does it flawlessly. It can easily be said that The Good Place is more than a TV show in so many ways. Life is an ongoing process and during this process, we are not always aware of our choices. But what if we do, what if we would be aware of every single choice that we make? Would that make us better human beings, or would it make our lives even harder? These are just a few questions that The Good Place magnificently elaborates on. Even though comedy is a material that plays a huge part in the show, it is not necessarily what the show is about. It's about all the questions that we have related to life.
Hauru no ugoku shiro (2004)
The heavy burden of our hearts
There's something unique in each movie that came out from Studio Ghibli and Howl's Moving Castle is definitely one of them with its charming atmosphere and lovely story. It makes you feel as you're stepping into a whole another world. The elements in the movie are so different that you could only imagine them, but somehow Miyazaki manages to make them real.
Even though love cannot be defined by simple words, our best bet of understanding it is by feeling it. Sometimes we feel a weird weight on our chest, as Howl says. And it's usually the heavy burden of heart, as answered by Sophie. Holding onto our loved ones makes us vulnerable in a way that when they're hurt, it brings an unbearable sadness to us. In any case, they're the ones that adds a meaning to our lives; and Howl's Moving Castle is an exceptional movie in telling this fact.
La grande bellezza (2013)
The greatest beauty of our lives
In the life that we have the chance to live, after all the pain that we've been through, we always realize that in the past there was a time that we were happy, because back then we would see the present and the future as one. Whereas, when we feel like we've grown, the future and the present does not seem the same to us at all. So we feel an unconscious suffering that correlates to our growth as a person.
Most of the times, life will feel meaningless. It will give us many reasons to think so, and we will always be ready to question it. But through this weight, we somehow always give dignity to the life that we are living. The great beauty that we look for is hidden inside this dilemma. It will never be clear to us and that is why it's beautiful.
The Great Beauty is not just a movie; it's essentially an endless book that even if you'd keep reading it for the rest of your life, you'd still find something to feel for, rather than learn from. It tells us that even though we let the time slip away from our hands and then feel sorry and guilty about it, we will power through no matter what.
As in Jep Gambardilla's words, "Beyond there is what lies beyond. I don't deal with what lies beyond. Therefore, let this novel begin. After all, it's just a trick."
Life is what we make it out to be and it also ends in a certain way that we're sure of. But trying to think where that way goes is pointless as the greatest beauty of our lives is behind this mystery. So, let us live the life however we want. After all, it will always end in the same way.
Fleabag (2016)
One of those shows that you can relate with
An imperfect life of an imperfect character who has imperfect surroundings. Seems relatable to me.
10/10
Ad Astra (2019)
Decent and enjoyable
This is one of those movies where the average IMDb rating is accurate. If you can ignore scientifically wrong mistakes and the Hollywood exaggeration, you should give it a shot.
I've always thought that the idea of having colonies in Mars and other planets is optimistic at best. Religions and beliefs, the idea of collecting money, the habit of humiliating anyone who is different... These are our characteristics in this planet. When all of these come together, it's really hard to think that we can live on any other planet.
Ad Astra questions these ideas with its story. That's why it was enjoyable for me.
7/10
The Favourite (2018)
Another great work by Lanthimos
While the movie beautifully pictures the atmosphere in the England palace at 18th centuries, it also makes you think about certain things like passion, love and intrigue. Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the best directors in the modern era but unlike his other films, he steps into a different area this time. Under the pressure of directing an historical movie for the first time, he tries to be as accurate as possible and in that regard, I would say he is successful.
There are some scenes that you can relate with the directing style of Lanthimos which criticize the palace's unnecessary exaggeration. In addition, Lanthimos refers to the aspects of human behaviour, which he is also known for, and makes the viewer realize it naturally, rather than forcefully.
Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone brings together a realistic trio of brilliance which earned every single one of them an Oscar nomination. This is also a thing to consider while reviewing this title, and it can only be a positive thing, obviously.
The general decoration, make-up and hairstyling is flawless. For the soundtrack, only classical music is used, so it may disturb the ones who are not familiar with it or the ones who dislike it. Other than that, there is no reason to think that this movie is bad. General consensus of the humankind is not trying to be 'grey' sometimes, but only choosing to be 'black' or 'white'. That is the only reason these movies are getting unfairly downgraded. I would recommend not to behave like this, nor listen to those who behave, as it kills all the joy you would get from any kind of entertainment.
8/10.
Kynodontas (2009)
Unique
The best word to use to describe this movie is 'unique'. It's probably the most interesting movie I've ever watched.
Now, being interesting doesn't mean that it's either good or bad. But it has different elements in it which makes it unique and also in my very own opinion, good, in the first place. You feel like it's about some kind of an example of a dsytopic world but it happens in the most realistic way that you also feel like it's the real world. What makes it really masterful is, the system is intelligently criticized with lots of metaphors that makes sense and a family with 5 members.
There are plenty of scenes to talk about for hours and hours. It makes you think in a different way, it disturbs you to make you realize the lines that are drawn for you in your life. The details are everywhere, they are in every scene. The movie is there to show that the manipulations in the real world are shaped by the freedom and the different perspectives.
These are the movies that describe the cinema best, not the action-packed Hollywood movies that denies you the ability of thinking.
Anyone who is interested in the art of cinema should watch it without any hesitation.
9/10
The Lion King (2019)
Better than I thought
Although I see this remake as an unnecessary move and had plenty of prejudgement about how good it can be, it actually was good enough. It's nothing like the animation one obviously but in its on way, it's enjoyable. I didn't find it boring at all even though most of the comments said so and most importantly, it was worth watching it at the theatre. All of the bad reputation it draws is mainly because of how bad the other live-action remakes were, so don't let it affect your opinion.
Some parts are directly taken from the animation, some parts are changed; voice acting is better than I expected, camera work and CGI is incredible and together they form an enjoyable movie.
Criticizements towards the emotions in the movie are mainly accurate as some scenes are emotion-wise less appealing but after all, these are animals talking and it's actually a live-action movie. There's no reason to expect the same mimics and same emotional scenes like there was in the animation version. And it's not like every scene lacks emotion or anything.
Generally speaking, it was better than I expected. I won't recommend it as a must-watch movie but if you do it, you won't really regret it assuming you don't have any negative bias towards it.

The Newsroom: I'll Try to Fix You (2012)
Incredibly touching
The last 10 minutes of this episode was probably the best sequence that I have ever watched in any TV series. The music, the acting, the series of events and all the other small things were simply amazing.
After a considerable amount of time spent on seeing how the personal lives of the characters shaping up, the connection to the real event was incredibly well executed. The song in the background played a big role at that.
I have just recently started watching The Newsroom for the second time and it has been more enjoyable than the first time. Witnessing the real events in a fictional environment is a unique experience and this show is most likely the best at that. I'm glad that it exists.
The Cat in the Hat (2003)
Childhood gem
First of all, it's really heartbreaking for me to see this awesome gem that taught me a lot when I was a little kid, being treated as one of the worst movies of all-time.
The thing people do not understand about this movie is that it's a movie for children. If you experience it for the first time after you pass the age of 10 or something, of course it's easy for you to find it really annoying.
The movie has a very unique way to tell everything and for that particular reason, I accept that it's not for all children, let alone every person. But to be honest, I didn't find the dark humor in it disturbing when I was a child in the first place. After watching it for the second time in college, the offensive things were more clear but still, it wasn't really disturbing.
Other than all of that, the movie deserves more credit for what Mike Myers did with his role, if not anything. To be perfectly honest his performance is utterly underrated. He basically played a great version of the character in the book. I watched all the other movies that were inspired by Dr. Seuss books and I can't really say that they are 'that' better than this one. At least not a difference where this movie is the bottom 78th.
Despite everything, the movie has a special place for me. It taught me to be responsible in a funny, interesting and exciting way. I mean, what else can I expect from a movie like this at the age of 7? Right, Cat?
9/10. 1 point is missing for not being suitable for everyone.
Ahlat Agaci (2018)
Perfect movie despite its length
Nuri Bilge Ceylan is arguably the best director Turkey has ever seen and Ahlat Agaci is definitely one of the best films in recent years that has been made by Turkish directors.
The plot, the acting and the cinematography is simply incredible. As a guy who lives in Turkey, it's very rare to see films with a quality. So in that way, I can easily say that Ahlat Agaci is the best movie in the past 4-5 years.
What stood out for me in the film was that you basically never get bored even though the film is quite long. No unnecessary scenes, no characters that you hate everytime you see them. Definitely a thing to consider.
NBC is so undervalued and underrated, at least in his homecountry. Interestingly enough, European cinema appreciates him and he almost always participates in Cannes Film Festival, but I'm %100 sure that half of Turkey doesn't even know his name. It's sad, but it also says a lot about the general look to cinema sector in Turkey.
Thanks to people like NBC, though, we can watch 'real' and 'non-American made' films.
Quality film by an incredible director. 10/10
Black Swan (2010)
Best performance by an actress in a leading role, in the history.
Black Swan is one of those films which you just can't describe how you feel after you finish watching.
Aside from the great cinematography, incredible plot, high quality and perfectly compatible soundtrack; the movie includes the answer of 'What's the highest level of acting?' Natalie Portman basically carried the beautiful things in this film all the way to that highest level.
The general subject is ballet and clearly it's one of those occupations which is not suitable for everyone. But it's not the subject that makes this film masterful; it's the acting, the music and the visual feast.
This film probably, and most likely, includes the greatest performance by an actress in a leading role, with Natalie Portman. Can't really describe it better.
So, for those who are not sure about watching Black Swan, witnesssing the true greatness should be an enough reason. 10/10
Joy (2015)
Lawrence is great, same does not go for the movie
I'll just try to be simple and clear.
Jennifer Lawrence did an outstanding job in her leading role, once again. But it's definitely hard to say the same thing for the movie itself.
I think it has the right and perfect idea to film but it's is mediocre that even an actor like Robert De Niro seems to be extinguished.
If you're either a Jennifer Lawrence fan or you just like her acting, you should watch it. Otherwise, there's no need to waste your time.
Life (2017)
A movie which should be evaluated with a different point of view
The amount of joy you get from this movie depends on your expectation. If you are expecting a science-fiction movie which includes detailed information about aliens and how we can deal with them, you'll probably not like the movie much. But the tension, the intensity is so suitable for those who look for these factors. A good ending too.
The main idea of the film is quite engrossing to be honest.
The curiosity about aliens has come along for hundreds of years and the information we have about them is pretty limited. So with that, we can't really expect anyone (mainly NASA) to share every research with the world. They might have contacted with aliens, or found critical information about them, but it might not be too good.
Think about it, NASA announces the first sample of an alien has been found. What would people think? Many would like it and welcome the news excitedly. But many would worry too. As long as we don't know that aliens can surely be trusted, humanity is not ready for them. I think this is the main reason behind NASA insisting to inform regularly.
The movie is pretty accurate to understand what I'm saying.
X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
Definitely the second best X-Men movie
I really think that this movie is a bit underrated.
To begin with, if you look back into the other X-Men movies, this movie definitely slips away from them with everything it has. The Last Stand was the best movie so far, but this one has taken the 1st place just because the story went perfectly.
That Quicksilver scene was really impressive and exciting. Same goes for Wolverine too but that one does not play that much of a big role, at least in this film.
People are generally not satisfied with the ending of the film but it showed us how powerful Jean is. Sophie Turner really stepped up in her "really important" role, too.
Best X-Men movie of all time. 8/10
Room (2015)
Good, but overrated
The Room got nominated for lots of awards and there were people claiming that it's the best movie of the year. Moving into the movie with this hype, there is almost no way to not get excited.
In my opinion the plot is separated into two parts. The first part is really interesting and causes you to think about lots of things, and this results into some more expectations. Pretty much every scene makes sense, until the part that Ma rolls Jack into the carpet. And then, everything goes the opposite way...
When Jack goes into the truck, the second part begins. I thought the movie was starting to get really exciting and dramatic, but it never happened. I thought the movie can't be that simple. I even thought Jack was in a dream and everything was just the preview of what will happen. But he wasn't dreaming. The police immediately found out Ma, and the rest of the second part is pretty much boring.
Now, i don't know if i'm unemotional or something, but i didn't get the dramatic side of it. I didn't feel what they experienced. The movie is just not good enough to tell it. Not to mention, there are lots of logical errors such as them not thinking about breaking the window. I know that there is a psychological part of it, and actually that's the point that i'm talking about, the movie just doesn't tell it well enough.
If Jacob Tremblay wouldn't carry the movie by himself with his absolutely amazing acting, i would definitely give this movie a lower rating and say that it doesn't deserve an Oscar nomination. But he made the movie acceptable, even though i still think it's really overrated.
6/10.
Gods of Egypt (2016)
Entertaining and a visual feast, but the storyline is not that good
I personally watched this movie's trailer first and pretty impressed by it so i decided to go and watch it in theater.
Generally speaking, i didn't get bored. The visual effects, visual of mythological legends and familiar faces in leading roles makes this movie at least fun to watch.
But i really think that it could be better, at least story-wise. The movie has such a great idea in itself and in my opinion they didn't use it so well. If they would, there could even be a series of great films. Storyline was so simple and we've seen so many films like this before.
You wouldn't regret watching it, but don't get so hyped. 5/10
Taare Zameen Par (2007)
Inspiring and a must-watch for pretty much anybody
If there would be a top 3 list for Bollywood films, i would definitely give a place for this movie in that. Not only it inspires not giving up and everybody being special, the screenplay goes on fluidly and it's really well-executed. Darsheel Safary almost single handedly carries the movie and plays his role perfectly.
The musics are absolutely perfect. They won't address to everyone as they might sound a little bit weird but i think they are perfectly created.
Some scenes are too dramatic as it is so hard not to drop one or two teardrops but i guess it's not that big of a problem.
A cut out film for those who don't believe in themselves.
Deadpool (2016)
A superhero movie like no other
Deadpool is highly unique and also highly entertaining in so many ways.
The storyline is pretty interesting as you start falling into it from the very beginning, and it goes on like not other superhero movie does. Plus, it has a great sense of humor in it. Couldn't expect more from such a cool character, and its movie.
Normally there are more than 5 superheroes in these kind of movies but Deadpool has pretty much only 5. That's a little bit expected because of the reason that it's centered just in Deadpool himself but as i said, being unique is the first thing that makes this movie special.
And also, the fired shots to Disney and Marvel were really fun to watch.
As far as the rating goes, the movie absolutely deserves 9 out of 10. Great stuff.
Already pumped for the second one!
