The Responder (2022)
2024 marvellous viewing - top class
I cant be doing with the usual BBC and all the others run of the mill police/crime dramas. Endless shouting and lacking definition. This is not. This is unique.
The acting by Martin Freeman is surreal actually so believable. His reactions is not standard but with his own personality. Extremely clever those few seconds before a response....class not seen in many actors.
I suspect this is based on some truth and knowing that the police arent always as straight. Corruption and undercover personal vendettas with deep involvement.
You feel so encapsulated in Chris and his weakness, being used, his faults and vices. So realistic he is at the end of the day a normal human but sadly, not achieving in his position. The sad thing is he's a brilliant officer in many ways, caring and genuinely wants to help the venerable. He's done his best with the young people involved in drugs and tried to do his best but as in reality they dont change and keep returning to the hamster wheel of crime.
I really felt his pain, loneliness and frustration. Absolutely subline and entertaining.
Triangle of Sadness (2022)
What was this satire? not as clever as it wants to be
The most random film Ive watched in a while. So long and disjointed. Some of the scenes went on too long and Im still querying the point of it all. Watched over 2 nights I just think who would enjoy this? For me it was trying to be clever with the rich are nasty satire but it just didnt work for me.
One minute is was clever, sharp and comical and next draft, desperate and drawn out.
The ending was very open to interpretation.
The film quality was brilliant, acting and directing amazing. But it could of been sharper with the story line.
Personally, I cant think of anyone I know who would enjoy this.
Shame.
Aftersun (2022)
Arty, creative, clever and thoughtful
I had to watch this twice to work it out.
I watched this for Paul Mescal after watching Normal people.
This is a memoir of a young girls first and last trip abroad with her father.
There are film clips and flash backs.
He is obv suffering from some kind of depression and alcohol abuse.
Incredibly arty and unusual style of filming making this unique and rather clever.
Its not a film you watch on a saturday night with alcohol and expect speed and be exhilaration.
Theres a lot of thought provoking moments. Theres a lot of pain there and it made me weep.
Any low scores on here are from not understanding the film.
The Gone (2023)
Long, boring and underwhelming
Honestly, it was the review in the Guardian - If you like The Kin youll enjoy this......what?????
Seeing it was showing on BBC4. Expecting something cultural and different but this was not. Very run of the mill BBC1 type of series.
The story line was below par the chemistry no and the random scenes. I felt this def wasmt a hooker, just random and silly.
The blend of NZ and Irish with subtitles just annoyed me. The script was a little basic. Comical at times.
Dont waste your time. Not really tense.. Perhaps a sunday afternoon watch if your really bored.
I fell asleep towards the end and turned it off. I didnt really care about the ending.
Killing Eve (2018)
What on earth happened after Episode 3?
Really BBC? The first 3 episodes were gripping, clever, refreshing. Jodie Cpmer was utterly brilliant but 9 episodes which went into utter nonsense page filling TV after the 4th. Stop dragging out episodes out which need to be finalised after 4. Utterly confusing was this a comedy, thriller or an utter mix of every genre under the sun? A complete mess of kitchen sink again. Keep to the script!
The Night Manager (2016)
They've thrown everything bar the kitchen sink into this
Was expecting wonders but they have thrown everything into this its like an over decorated wedding cake that's just bland. Fantastic cast, amazing locations, beautiful girl, speed boats but its like a mishmash of ideas jumping from Bond and glamour one minute to bland and silly another. It doesn't run smooth but grates from one idea to another.
I most definitely wouldn't call this class - compared with some of the quality the BBC have been churning out. This story does not come across at all believable but totally relies on some gorgeous cinematography in Majorca spoilt by some clumpy economy style directing in the Uk in some parts absolutely dreadful laughable directing. The script - I just don't know whats going on there? again over elaborate. Whats the point of Jed? Seems like the costume dept have gone overboard, some cardboard acting and some close ups of her luscious lips? I cant understand where Coleman fits into this its just weird - some of the worst scripting I have seen in a while.
Its long and never seems to end because where possible they have thrown as much into the scene as they can. If you remove the actor Tom Hiddleston (as Pine) this would be a farce. Many of the fans of him are just drooling over Tom as the next Bond. Possibly?
It just doesn't gel. The story just doesn't engross me - Its called the Night Manager - is there any relevance?
