Elvis (2022)
Baz c0cks it up again :-(
Baz takes a great topic and manages to make a mockery of it, every time. What an absolute waste of a fantastic cast.
This movie had no substance, and was far from reality. You can expect a continual dramatic musical score, with garbled snippets of of Elvis' timeline. Much of which feels as though they could be debatable. It played out like a live theatre show that doesn't take itself seriously. Would have loved to see character depth.
I adore Elvis and this movie did not do him justice. It could have been a serious look at his life's journey.
You'd get more of an Elvis fix watching his old movies.
Strangerland (2015)
Terrible
Odd - far from realistic. Kills me that non Australians think this is what Australians are like.
Nicole Kidman has never been able to act, this movie is testament to that. She'd score some points if she would just talk in a normal voice when acting, instead of a soft whispering girly voice.
If you must watch it, watch it for the scenery.

Hell on the Border (2019)
Mumbling, music and riddling dialogue...
Had to call it quits at 12:05. Opening scene was beyond ridiculous, why couldn't he walk himself and the horse out? Maybe there was a good reason, but I couldn't understand what was being said due to the actors mumbling and the musical score being played over the top of it all, I had to resort to putting up the subtitles.
Mother/Android (2021)
Meh..
Ok premise. There was not a lot of back story provided to help build an understanding of the plot, it just leapt right in. Then after the initial uprising we jump eight months forward and its hard to believe the young couple lasted that long with all huffing and puffing Georgina does throughout every scene.
Personally, as a midwife, it is always difficult to watch any portrayals involving pregnancy and birth, so it was very difficult to listen to the slow heart rate they portrayed to be the baby's when at the camp. Would it kill the movie makers to pay a professional for some advice before they start filming?
Overall it was pretty slow, they made some stupid decisions and basically lost all. May as well have died in the first scene.
Cosmic Sin (2021)
Not good.
The opening scene had promise, it diverted from there.
It seems an alien race that "reproduces" via a zombie virus (?) has decided to make its presence known to humans.
I am an hour in and I still don't know any of the lead actor's names. I barely have a back story on any of them, maybe Bruce was married to the annoying Dr?! At this point I don't care who lives or dies. I am not sure what planet they are on, or what the deal is with the previous war. A Q-bomb is referred to constantly and talk of killing millions of humans in the past, but no explanation as to why or how or where apart from the preamble text in the opening scenes.
I wanted the Dr to die the second she uttered her first lines, not sure if that was good acting or she just was so incredibly unbelievable as an educated physician.
Its 500 years in the future and not much has changed bar some flying cars, and neon lights are all the rage. Obviously Elon Musk's intracranial interface must not have taken off, as they still appear to be using apple watches to communicate. Pity.
I love a good sci-fi but this is not one.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Blend of genres - entertaining
It kept me intrigued all the way through. Think Cowboys & Aliens and The Life of Pi blended with a WWII drama.
I saw the gremlin as a metaphor for her husband, hence why she needed to be the one to kill him in the end.
The filming was cleverly done with the majority being voice acting.
Some scenes were far fetched but kept it tense.
Overall it was entertaining.
Honest Thief (2020)
Honestly, it's no good
*Spoilers*
Starts out ok, it slowly sets story up, he is a master thief and wants to come clean to live the straight life.
I am not American, but I assume the best way in most countries to confess to a crime would be to head to your local police station, lawyer up and make a statement, with witnesses. I doubt calling the FBI would be the way to go, nor handing two jokers the keys to your ill-gotten-gains. He wasn't such a master after all.
So after 46 minutes I had to switch off, the plot just continued to frustrate.
How It Ends (2018)
Avoid America in an apocalypse!
I have to say that it seems that every American apocalypse movie seems to unravel into Americans killing Americans, for no reason.
There is potentially a natural disaster taking place and the citizens take up arms and kill each other. Is this the American way? It's not just this movie, but nearly every American apocalypse movie, what a sad portrayal of the citizens.
Overall not a bad movie. Shows the development of the relationship between father-in-law and son-in-law. Has a road-trip type vibe to it all.
The movie itself leaves a lot unexplained, such as the reason for the train derailment, why the refugees are minimal yet the protagonist's partner makes it out unscathed. And most importantly the event itself is left unexplained.
Top End Wedding (2019)
Beautiful
A fabulous romantic comedy set in the picturesque top end of Australia. Well worth watching just for the scenery alone, but the plot and acting is top notch and will keep you engaged. Laugh out loud moments and tear inducing scenes scattered throughout. Also loving the sista girls! A sweet love story, well worth a watch.
Mile 22 (2018)
It's getting harder to watch these kind of films...
It is getting harder and harder to watch these action films where America saves the day with wit, high tech and cohesive organised brute force. It should really be classes as a fantasy genre, because America cannot even save themselves from a cold, how do they expect us to believe they can save the world!?
I tapped out of this movie 30 minutes in. Usually a fan of Mark Wahlberg, but just couldn't allow my imagination to buy this story, and there was next to no chemistry between Mark and Lauren Cohan.
The plot was haphazard, difficult to follow and unbelievable. Every line was a wise cracking mike-drop serve, it made the whole film seem cheesy and unrealistic.
Nope.
Extraction (2020)
Chris cannot lose!
Enjoyed watching Chris in an Aussie role, he needs to do much more. Would have loved the story on the two fella's he was downing beers with in the beginning of the film.
Noted that the viewers from Bangladesh felt that the film should have been true to life regarding their hometown, but would argue that 99% of all Hollywood films are a total work of fiction. This movie wasn't a documentary, its fiction. Eye candy, explosions and gore.
And if it makes the Bangladeshi people feel better, Australia is nothing like what you see in Mad Max, Razor Back or Croc Dundee!
Relax, let it go, just enjoy the art. I did.
Submergence (2017)
Tried to be more than it was
My rating is based purely on James' braw accent and the beautiful scenery.
This story had potential but it took itself too seriously. Danni's technical jargon and poetic view on her job was reaching. This, alongside the vague covert role that James was to carry out, had me wondering if I missed something. It all held opportunity for intrigue but got bogged down in trying to show off. I guess I need my stories spelled out for me?
James and Danni didn't hold the required chemistry needed to pull this film off. Their initial banter was aggressive and felt more like a job interview, complete with muscle flexing. Danni's character lacked depth, no pun intended, but she just wasn't real. The intimacy scene was a bit like a war over who will dominate.
The ending was the biggest failure. All three missions left incomplete.
Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak (2020)
I am not sure what the point actually is?
I stopped watching during episode three as I had to ask myself if this was a religious-promotion show? Because if the leaders of pandemic cessation attempts are relying on their god to save humanity, then I am out.
They follow individuals around, telling their stories, but it is hard to understand what the message is.
For instance, the Dr that works in a small county hospital, doing 72 hour shifts, states that her small hospital couldn't handle an outbreak. However the producers fail to make the link that having the Dr visit a pig-show in her hospital scrubs and then seemingly return to the hospital in the same scrubs is actually a contributing factor of poor hygiene practices, thus leading to the spread of germs. Or was that the hidden message? Showing us how underprepared everyone is? And how ludicrous it is to put our health in the hands of those who look to god to save them in the end.
Doesn't matter, I couldn't waste anymore time watching it.
Mr Inbetween: Monsters (2019)
By far the best episode yet
This series has been an absolute standout, and the episode Monsters just took it to a whole new level. It was a tale of justice against pure evil, which held satisfaction when we know that real justice is elusive in the real world. The acting was emotive and precise. I look forward to a new episode each week.
Keep it up!
Black Summer (2019)
So much dumb *spoilers*
Got to episode four and had to call it quits. Great premise, good acting, fantastic filming, just a really dumb script.
The car chase saga in episode three was pointless. And the 'lord of the flies' side-twist in the school was unbelievable. This says more about the script writer's take on their own American society, as its all a bit dismal really.
And in ep 4 when the dude finds a utopian supermarket, with power intact..... he doesn't do an "am I alone here check" and lock the doors and set up for the next 20yrs... seriously!? I am out!
Is the writer trying to portray that the average American has zero survival skills? If so, I am sold, because not one of them seems to be able to close a door behind them.
I wanted to love it, my soul won't let me.
The Orville (2017)
Better than Star Trek!
As a long time trekkie I am loving this show. It adds a sense of realism to the Star Trek genre. Its incredibly entertaining.
Ready Player One (2018)
Terrible
If you have read the book, avoid the film. You will be devestated by the film.
They could have run with the immense detail from the book but they have just dumbed it down for the majority. The only similarities left are the characters names.
I could go on and on - but just enjoy the book for what it was and give the film a big miss.
