Session 9 (2001)
Waste of Time!
This is the non-scariest, slowest, lamest, dumbest, NON-SCARY movie I have ever seen. A TOTAL waste of time.
Reckless (2014)
Cliche's to the Nth Degree
Granted, I could only make it through the first episode, and that had been a total chore. This is just another drama that is riddled with cliche's (sorry, but our USA keyboards do not allow for the French accent aigu, to be placed over the letter 'e', so I have substituted it with an apostrophe.). In fact, there are so many cliche's that even the cliche's seem to have cliche's - sleazy attorney tricks in the courtroom, unrealistically beautiful cast, the women wear far too much makeup, the hair is always perfectly coiffed, have breast enhancements, dressed overtly sexually at times, predictable dialogue, predictable storylines, predictable, predictable, and yet again, predictable, just like the ending of this review.
Code 46 (2003)
A Futuristic Language in a Dystopian World
I absolutely love this film. I have seen it more times than I can count for a few different reasons, one of them being its calming nature and music, and another, strangely enough, and another being the language they had developed for the film. I greatly enjoy linguistics, and I strongly believe the language they had developed for the film is an incredibly realistic projection of how we will communicate in the future on an international level. Languages are not just created by someone sitting down and 'writing a language', but develop via the adoption of popular vocabulary and grammar from other dominant languages, and they continue to evolve over time. This movie is set in the future, English is the dominant, international language (as it is now), and it is peppered with languages including Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, and Arabic. For instance, the Spanish words of 'chico' and 'chica' are used to refer to male and female children, and 'palabra' for password. greetings are in multiple languages, but mostly the Chinese, 'ni hao', and Arabic, 'As-salaam-alaikum...'. Airplane travel is referred to as 'par avion', a car is the Spanish, 'en coche', a suitcase/hand luggage or carrying one's luggage is the Italian, luggage 'a mano'. The language had been a clever creation, and a quite wonderful and intellectual surprise. Be sure to watch with English subtitles so you catch all of the references, plus it'll help with the accents. Regarding the film itself, I think it is a smart take on the future it isn't perfect, such as when the nurse explained the 'situation' and why clones don't necessarily express themselves identically the same each time, I had had to figure out what she had meant. I had also wished the couple had been able to spend more time together because I feel it had been over far too quickly; there had been so much effort made into getting them together just for them to part without really getting the reward of being with one another. I think the movie is a great concept, and aptly conveys a dystopian future that has been badly affected by Global Climate Change, terrible air pollution, and the Ozone Layer is so depleted that life must be lived at night. Simple things like traveling into certain 'zones' can only be done if you have permission, which is denoted by having a 'cover' for the allotted amount of days, and if you overstay your 'cover', you are stuck there, not allowed to leave, but if you are a visitor then how can you stay? No money, no job, no place to live...quite dystopian, indeed.
The Good Cop (2018)
It is less than mindless
So you can understand where I am coming from, my preferred styles of comedy run along the lines of The Office, Arrested Development, Cheers, Taxi, and WKRP in Cincinnati. The Good Cop is one of the WORST shows I have seen in decades. Sure, it is supposed to be a comedy, but when I had finally stopped torturing myself at the 19.37 mark, it had been so chock full of cliches and absurdities that had ranged from family relationships and professional relationships, to male/female attractions, to (failed) autopsy findings. All of them had been so ridiculous in nature that I could not find anything about the show to be redeeming, interesting, surprising, or.....funny. I guess I had found this show to be a bit 'intellectually insulting'. For so many creators, backers, actors, etc.... to have gotten involved with the production of this show because they had found its concept worth believing in, had found it humorous enough, and had finally found worth executing is baffling to me. This show is less than mindless. Wow; I have just realized how extremely rare it is that I have felt moved enough by a movie/show to actually write a review. This show really is THAT BAD.
Spotless (2015)
Loved it!
Very good show; not as good as Top of the Lake, but very good. Episode 10 is rad because of brother Martin 'doing what needs to be done', despite his sexual heterosexual persuasion! LOVE that bi-sexual stuff! I find it that a man to cross the 'gay boundry line' to be courageous as all get out, ESPECIALLY if the man crossing that line isn't gay, but is doing it for a 'bigger reason', someone who is sacrificing himself, his 'culturally accepted' morals, and is sacrificing what others supposedly think/feel about him for 'not being straight', and is willing to make all of these sacrifices anyway due to some kind of 'greater responsibilities' he feels he owes to his brother Jean and his family. So rad. I am from a Southern California beach community, so please excuse my American 'Surf Slang' (I have a BA degree in Environmental Studies from university, and am one class shy of minor in Biology, I have a TESL certification to teach English, and have a specialization in grammar, a certification in Non-profit Management, and am half way completed my two year degree in Wine and Food Sales and Marketing, but I love using So. Cal. slang, despite how uneducated I sound.) So, I 'Thank you for your support.' Wait a moment; hadn't that been the Bartles and James tag line?' LOL!!!
Untold Stories of the ER: Worms (2012)
Watch This for a Creeep-out
This is a great episode, whether or not you are familiar with this show. This episode is the first time I had watched this show, and I had been blown away. It had been executed SO REALISTICALLY that I'd thought I'd been watching a documentary; granted, it is a documentary with dramatic recreations, which had led to my confusion. Consequently, this is episode great, is so creeepy, and it is amazing, ie 'amazing' meaning, 'How Is This Possible?', 'This is NOT possible', and 'How Could This be an Accurate Portrayal of Someone's Experience?'. This woman's stort is Incredibly Unbelievable. You Have Got to Watch This. Enjoy It.
