Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
Once More With Feeling
A straight copy of the legendary episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer "Once More With Feeling". It was well done but more than an homage, more like a rip.
I know every episode can't be original but this is pretty clearly a straight copy.
It's still fun to hear the singing voices of the characters. Some as expected have good voices and some are aided by autotune.
I like that they didn't take a cheap way out set wise. The special effects, set pieces and all the other Star Trek expectations were met.
Rebecca R and Kirk had the nice local playhouse voices, Christina Chong took the Amber Benson role of the cast member with the killer voice. We sometimes probably forget how these actors are super talented in general.
Entertaining but not original. I'm ok with that.
Insecure (2016)
Am odd portrayal of African American women
I am probably not the demographic for this show, but it seems to portray African American women in a poor light. Needy, sexually repressed and promiscuous at the same time, really disrespectful to each other. Like Sex And The City with fewer laughs and lower portrayals of the main characters. It seems to want to point out that black men prefer white women and for good reason, and not how they look, but how they act. Every reaction is an over reaction.
There are some redeeming qualities but I don't see this as a positive show. I feel sorry for the two main characters really.
Love Life (2020)
Not great, not terrible.
Sort of a mix of Girls and Sex in the City, with a niceness umbrella thrown over it. Overtly diverse but in a heavy handed way. You couldn't find a more un Friends like group if you tried.
Sometimes you felt like it was real and reflective, others manipulative and a fantasy of a real world. Short so not a waste and so,e good moments, just don't expect to feel like Anna K is worth empathy in most cases. She seems a bit promiscuous and cold and using than someone worthy of a really relationship.
Dollface (2019)
Crazy Ex Girlfriend without the singing and with profanity
Almost the same show in style and feel, just no musical numbers. Also, no one seems real, and that's actually ok. Works for the humor. I think Kat Denning is sort of a one note access but it's a good note. Brenda Song seems as much the star as Kat. Will watch it through. Only 4 episodes in.
Carnival Row (2019)
An outstanding world building effort with some interesting characters
I greatly enjoyed the world building and the character evolutions. Yes it has some parallels to political claimants of today yet doesn't make it too impactful to the progression off the story. Visually also a treat. Those complaining about the dark presentation need to learn to set up and watch an hdtv. Turn the lights off, turn on the surround, and immerse yourself in this.
I hope it continues. It has the potential to me a new Game of Thrones ( gasp!).
