Freedomland (2006)
It had potential....
6 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
but never came through.

Once, long ago, a very talented writer sat at his desk and constructed an elaborate plot, touching on the tough issues racism, socioeconomic privilege, and mental illness through the investigation of missing child. It was political statement wrapped in a thriller shell.

And then....

A screenwriter ruined it. Now, you sit there wondering how exactly an entire housing project can be locked down without someone calling out the blatant civil rights violation. You wonder why the name is Freedomland (other than for metaphorical reasons), when Freedomland comprised only about 5 minutes of the movie. You wonder why the profilers are involved only to arrive via a circular at a conclusion that was seen straight ahead. You wonder why the author allowed his novel to be massacred.

Roll Bounce (2005)
Pretty good.

I think this movie was marketed wrong, when seeing the trailers I assumed the majority of the movie was about the roller skating, not quite enough to get me in to see it. In reality there are a lot of hearty story lines that attract you to the characters on an emotional level.

The Sweetness character is a hilarious disco stereotype and it couldn't have been played better.

I think a nod should be given to Bow Wow, who stands out as one of the few who crossover from singing to acting very well...especially for someone his age. Hopefully he plays some more serious roles and gains some more respect.

Dirty Love (2005)
Soundtrack?
18 December 2005
There's a song playing on the menu...

Forgive me for this.

". . really miss your wife. Maybe someday we'll receive you in the California skies." Somebody help, I really love the song!

That aside, this movie was sort of surprising. For any girl who falls a little to hard, who has a little trouble getting back up, and is known for making a mess of of herself along the way, there are moments you will relate to. There are plenty you wont, but for those of us who haven't gotten out of bed for three days and still can't eat mu shu pork, you'll just get it.
