The Brokenwood Mysteries: Brokenwood: The Musical (2023)
Loved it!
I agree with s_oneale. This was a great start to the season. Fun, curious and so great to see Ralph St John back in the township. Only Brokenwood seems to have the confidence to bring back murderers and give them plausible reasons for being in the town. I thought the device of how the killer secreted the weapon was clever and the musical numbers were nuts. But then isn't that the point? I think the writers were paying homage to 'Waiting for Guffman' maybe? Shakespeare, a musical, and a weeping digger driver what more could you want? Love the Borkenwood Mysteries. I hope they keep coming for many more seasons.
The Brokenwood Mysteries: Shot of Love (2023)
A high point in an excellent season
Not sure what prcmd was watching! I thought this episode was one of the highlights so far. Brokenwood occasionally does the split story and it's always unexpected. Really liked the way Mike's personal story resolved. In murder mysteries sometimes the main characters are bloodless. Getting a look behind the emotional curtain is nice sometimes. Loved Chalmers and Kristin and their double act. Going from strength to strength. Brokenwood is distinctive in that it's never truly formulaic. It takes risks. This season there's been a small serial element to Mike's life. Not overpowering just enough to make me intrigued. Can't wait for Episode 6 and more seasons to come - I hope.
Vegas (2021)
Fresh, profound, confronting and compelling
There's so much to love here. Great cinematography, directing, fresh performances and writing that dares to be bold and big and yes, if you're going to integrate Shakespearian tragedy, at times melodramatic but that's refreshing because this story is King Lear meets MacBeth with some Julius Caesar ( I think that's coming?) overlaid with obvious aroha for a story about a protagonist seeking change and redemption; a gang leader trying to make change for the good in his own mismanaged way. In gangland (Pakeha, Maori, Italian, Russian, Chinese) that's never going to be an easy road to hoe. Hence we have a dramatic premise. This is a universal story given some unique culture specifics that work well - put it this way - does the world need another Italian mafia story? Not in my world but with this one I'm hooked.
PS - to mschuster-550104 - You're an actor, you don't get all the parts, get over it. Dumb move but at least you're honest I guess. Think twice next time e hoa.
