2020 (2021)
Great start but disappointing
The first twenty-three episodes were 10/10: suspenseful, understated, emotionally powerful, nuanced characters and realistic dialogue. I won't give away any plot points but after Episode 25 all the delicate emotional complexity vanishes, replaced by predictable, recycled action tropes. It's as if they tacked two different mosalsals together and hoped nobody would notice. Maybe they did, considering it must have been filmed during the height of the pandemic.
It's still worth watching for the great acting by the whole cast, particularly Carmen Lebbos, Nadine Njeim (who gives the best performance I've seen from her) and Qosay Khaulli, who deserves an Oscar.
A Girl Named Zat (2013)
Wonderful realistic Egyptian series
This series is a real classic. It is beautifully written, well-acted, emotionally affecting and so much better than the recent crop of Egyptian mosalsalat. I wish Netflix would air this in the US and UK with English subtitles. Western audiences deserve to see a realistic portrait of Egyptian life for once!
