Class of the Titans (2006)
Perfect show for fans of Greek Mythology that aren't afraid of a new twist on well-known legends.
Seven descendants of Greek Mythological Heroes learn that they alone can stop Cronus, with their own special abilities. This show is one of the few I've seen that has been based upon Greek Mythology. Some people who are familiar with the legends about Achilles, Hercules, Artemis, Atalanta, Theseus, Narcissus, Odysseus, Jason, any Greek Hero that is mentioned in this new cartoon, and might dislike how some of the stories of these heroes and others have been changed, but personally I like how its different. Its a new take on the legends we already know... really, all of this Greek stuff IS a "legend" and like all legends, there are different versions of it that have been changed over time. This is just yet another new version, and I love it so far and can't wait for more. The action, the adventure, the drama, the hint of romance here and there... its, to me, an amazing show and thank goodness its on every day (at least on Teletoon =D ) because I can't live a day without seeing it--- I haven't seen it all, yet.
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Watch this movie with friends--- if you like it, let it be one of your forever favourites. If you don't, laugh about it with your friends, and move on to better things.
Pride and Prejudice... I started to read the book in the 7th grade (2 years ago) but never got to finish it (the school year ended, so unfortunately I couldn't read it, and I'm not close enough to a library to sign it out). So I admit, I did miss some of it although I finished three quarters of the wonderful story. As for the TV series, I saw part of one, but actually decided to change the channel because it was at the end of the whole series and I wanted to watch it at the start instead.
If you never read the book, and you never saw the series, you'll love this movie because it is a touching tale of love, and... of course, misunderstanding. Its a sweet tale, really.
Overall, I thought it was great. Because I haven't read the entire book, and because it has been so long admittedly since I read it, I found the story wonderful and at times heart wrenching. Those who faithfully read the book, and remember it well, may very well disagree with me, and the reviews that are a little less... kind... should show you that. However, the tale itself is great, and if you are someone who doesn't enjoy reading long books, and likes more modern movies, that aren't five hours long, and you love love stories, then this movie is for you.
The people who worked on this entire production firstly had to cram a fair sized book into 2 hours, a little over. It had to try and keep up the old fashioned setting, get actors that seemed compatible or not compatible, and direct it. A lot of you blame the actors in the movie, but a movie is only as good as its director, as good as its screenwriter. Actors alone can't pull anything off and personally I think given the script these actors had, it was done excellent. True, Mr Darcy didn't seem quite as proud, just more stubborn and... a tad... awkward, a lone-wolf type. And granted, Elizabeth seemed to like him at least a little from the start. Forgetting entirely what this movie was based on, you must love it, and I think its well worth watching at least once. It pulls off the old-fashioned setting, perhaps not exactly historically accurate, but lets face facts, few people watching this movie will notice that. This movie is not meant for adults alone--- otherwise, it would have been R-rated, but it was not. And that means it can't just tend to the likings of adults.
Give the movie a chance--- watch it with friends, and if you like it, let it be one of your favourites. If you don't like it, forget about it, make sure to have a funny movie with you and just enjoy that. Its fine to have an opinion--- its only when it gets dragged on, endlessly, that it becomes a little bit silly. Not everyone has the same opinion, some people such as myself loved the movie, others disliked it greatly--- but we're all bound to have different opinions and need to respect that fact.
Saw II (2005)
Good movie; not great, but good. Third movie may mean room for redemption in the eyes of some---
The first movie, although extremely gruesome, was brilliant. It showed us just how much people take life for granted--- all of us do, there isn't a single soul who can fairly and rightly say that they had never at least once in the most tiny way taken advantage of the life they were given.
This movie, although not quite meeting the expectations of many, was good. Great? That's all a matter of opinion of every individual. But it WAS good.
There wasn't a whole lot of character development--- we basically learned that each person did this or that in their past, and how they were connected--- through Daniel's dad. They all had evidence planted against them by his dad. Really, it was only the kid (Daniel) and the girl (Amanda) that I wanted to live. Why? Well, because Daniel is what he is--- a kid. Not a little four year old kid, but still not an adult. Amanda? Because she at the moment seemed to be the only one who actually was willing to do anything to survive Jigsaw's game.
The characters were way bad. This one guy goes around killing people or leaving them to their deaths... doesn't make much sense to do so at the start. Wouldn't it be smarter to keep them around to help you find an antidote, and then kill them so you will ultimately be the survivor? But he goes around and bashes them on the head and what not.
The movie was good, but it has a lot of room for improvement. I have to say that I didn't expect the ending--- I really didn't believe that Amanda would carry on Jigsaw's torture game for those taking advantage of life. I just thought, oh, so she escaped but returned to her taking-advantage-of-life-ways and he brought her back. Then we learn that she in fact, is the new Jigsaw. And it makes sense--- in a weird way. She survived it, so she knew it was possible. She was already once a drug addict and in jail, so nobody ever accused this girl of being some brilliant genius of a human being in the first place. And Jigsaw always had to have a front row seat, remember? Amanda, starting on her very first 'game', had a front row seat. She was one of the supposed victims stuck in the house.
There are a few things we have to consider--- Jigsaw had cancer, so he was dying. Was it likely for him to fix that house up so that it had all sorts of traps like before? Not likely. What is most likely is that Amanda, with some help, did it all. Either that, or it was done before the game. Amanda and Daniel were in the bathroom that we first saw in the original Saw movie--- so its possible the whole place was rigged for different times, different games set up for different people caught by Jigsaw taking advantage of life.
As I said, this movie wasn't great. It had its flaws just like all movies usually do--- but its still worth a watch at least once, when you're considering what movie to rent. Or if you just see it on a movie channel--- its not something you will always want to watch over and over. Its something you should for sure want to see once. The rest is all just... a matter of opinion.
This movie left an opening for a sequel, with the new Jigsaw. This was Amanda's first game... she has room to improve, and by the third movie if they do follow through with it, she should have already gone through with the game a few times before the movie starts. A good movie with flaws, and has room for redemption.
Four Brothers (2005)
Took time to introduce characters at the start and then got to the real point of this movie... "Burying their mother... and her killer."
My dad one night brought home two movies he borrowed from a friend (who wants to start a movie store and buys all the newest movies)... Brothers Grimm, and Four Brothers. Personally, I wanted to watch The Brothers Grimm... I had seen the previews and thought it would be awesome. Instead, we watched Four Brothers first. I was at first groaning, because I knew what it was about, and I knew it would be decent, but I thought this was a movie to be watched when the satellite went out. I was actually surprised.
The directors wasted no time whatsoever in getting directly to the killing of Evelyn Mercer... now most movies would have talked about her raising these four brothers, perhaps even when they left. I suppose for those who were confused about characters, that would have been good. Instead, they creatively at the start had the characters laid out in front of us. It all started at the funeral, where in the deleted scenes they had the brothers give a Eulogy. A scene I think would have done the film well to be kept, but wasn't. In this scene, first Jeremiah went up to say a few words about their mother, and then Jack did. He mentioned how their mother took him in, talked about it, but got too emotional.
To introduce us at the start to the characters, they decided to let Green tell Fowler about the Mercer's. Bobby, the heavy-weight champion screw up (replacing what he actually said with a more appropriate word), Jack, the first class screw up, third class rocker, and Jeremiah, who was the rising star of the bunch but found a cause. This gives us a little background, and the file he showed Fowler about Bobby is filled with lots of paper, so we know then that Bobby has had a lot of run ins with the law.
The director and everyone who contributed to this movie knew one thing... things were going to change soon enough. Soon they'd be shooting first and asking questions later, and they'd be focusing on finding their mothers killer. So instead of having things action packed from the start, the directors tried to show us a side of the brothers that later we wouldn't see. They showed us that these brothers were close, and whether brothers by blood or not, they were there for each other. Bobby, who's typically the one who comes off all tough, has his own emotional moment when he's crying about his mother. Whoever said the characters weren't really talked about a lot, didn't pay attention to the movie.
So they share their moments after the funeral, and then its time for Thanksgiving Dinner. We learn here that Jack is a bit of a cook, and that the brothers really like Hockey. Now I saw it mentioned how in Detroit it would be more likely for them to play Basketball than hockey. I'd like to point out that this movie was filmed in Toronto, and hockey is huge in Canada even though our sport is technically lacrosse, so its possible that they were just going by that. And as for the people playing hockey, if you notice it is the director who is playing goalie which in one of the special features it shows the cast and crew playing a good old game of hockey. Each brother, other than Bobby, sees a different memory of their mother, showing us a bit of what was probably said in their childhood. Jeremiah being told by the memory of his mother to close his mouth, Angel being told by the memory to keep his elbows off the table, and Jack being told he was safe. The hockey game shows us a little fun side of the brothers, and then things start to get more serious.
The brothers are seeking revenge, trying to find out who killed their mother, someone who was kind and sweet and wasn't the type to have enemies. Okay, so granted, they made a few bad decisions in the start, by just 'winging it' but they didn't care how they got revenge, just that they did. Bobby in particular has a huge criminal record, so he's not one to think seriously about something like this. You can say all you want that they seemed to lighthearted considering what they were set out to do, but you need to keep in mind that Jeremiah disapproved of it, and he was really the only one we can officially say had straightened out. The others were all screw ups still. Criminals, in general, are always light hearted. If its something you've done before, then your not going to sit up at night and cry because you killed someone. Your just going to act as if it never really happened. In these brothers eyes, each person they killed got what they deserved. Men in general don't usually like showing emotions, particularly crying or talking about how they feel. Of course that is a stereotype and isn't always the case, but in this movie, talking about how one feels about what their doing is just out of the question. We don't really know that these brothers didn't feel guilty about what they did, because it could have simply been an act for their brothers. We know Jack didn't want them to kill people, and Jerry stays out of this entirely when it involves gangs until after Jack gets shot basically. Then he stands up and kills someone to save Bobby.
Overall I thought this movie was good. If the majority of people like this movie, that doesn't mean you will, and vice versa. So you decide if the movie sounds interesting, rent it, watch it, if you really like it, then buy it.
Fantastic Four (2005)
A great movie to watch, despite its negative comments that have been said
All I've seen is negative comments about this movie, and I just don't get it, or at least, I didn't at first. This movie has humor, and yet it is still similar to the comics it is based on. Is it exact? NO! WHAT movie in the world is always the exact as the original thing it is based on? Very few of them, and frankly, I have nothing bad to say about this movie.
They've already made their money on the comics and the story in the comics, now their making money off the movies, which although have the same general idea, is completely different. Change isn't always bad, and in this case, I think this movie was done well. The characters were all different, just like before. The important parts are the same, and by that I of course mean the characters names as well as their powers.
Say what you want about this movie, but all I have to say is this. Don't judge it by what I say, don't judge it by what others say. Judge it by what you think... rent it, watch it, and if you like it, great, and if you don't, well I guess you don't. People can say whatever they want about this movie or any movie for that matter, but go by what you think. Personally, I believe that this movie was great. Having never read the actual comics that it is based on, however, means that I am of course vulnerable to like it. If I were to read the comic now, I may not like it as much.
Personally, I give it a 10/10, forgetting entirely that its based on a comic, and just judging the movie on whole.
