San Giovanni: L'Apocalisse (2002)
A very Catholic view of John...
Movie takes a very Catholic view of John of Patmos, in that he is portrayed as the Apostle who witnessed the Crucifixion, when in fact no such hard link has ever been presented...most scholars place the writing of Revelation around 85-90 AD, almost sixty years after the crucifixion. While possible, John would have been close to 100 years old at the time of the writings...having said that, this version of the film must have been edited, because it shows scenes from 9/11 and the attack on the Twin Towers, or at least in the version I watched...which would be a mean trick, as that attack occurred two years after this movie was filmed...minor point, and there may be a number of releases...a solid telling of one of the most moving Bible stories, and one of the most vivid as well. Told, or rather shown, in a fashion that makes sense and semblance of a very cryptic writing...well done...a fitting work to end a brilliant career...
Origin: Design, Chance and the First Life on Earth (2016)
Head spins odds about the probability of life
A rather dry presentation of the various theories of how life came to be on Planet Earth...smarter people than me have done the calculations, and the numbers are mind blowing/head spinning...for example, the simplest cell we know of requires at least 300 distinct proteins to exist...I am assuming this to be accurate, as I am not a microbiologist, but such information is readily available...the odds of a single protein happening purely by chance have been calculated at 10 to the 164th power...that is 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000 ,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,0 00,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,0000,000, 000,000,000,000...more or less...let that soak in the next time you here someone explaining how life just "popped up" on this Earth...other theories of the origin of life are taken equally harshly to task, from the RNA world, to panspermia...a truly mind numbing and humbling documentary, and well worth a watch
Do You Believe? (2015)
A heartwarming story of what true Faith is,..
A heart warming story of true devotion to the message of Christ and the Cross...a dozen lives intersect at a great illuminated cross in some unnamed city...actually well acted...Brian Bosworth is quite good as Joe, the dying ex con, and Lee Majors and Cybill Shepard are great as the somewhat frumpy yet lovable couple grieving the loss of their daughter...Mira Sorvino puts in a credible effort as a struggling homeless widowed mom struggling to keep a roof over her daughter's head and food in her tummy. The real gem in this movie, though, is Makenzie Moss...utterly adorable, she has that open honesty that only a child can engender...not sure what the negative reviewers are griping about...guess some people just aren't happy, and wish no one else was either...all in all a very good movie
Where Is Good? (2015)
Actuallyba fairly good movie that poses some real questions...
WARNING-this review contains possible spoilers...A really quite good movie...well acted, reasonably scripted, and decent direction...a woman goes to a party when hubby is out of town, and gets drugged, raped, and pregnant. To really complicate things, she and said hubby have been trying to conceive for a long time, with no results...where the story line falls a little flat is the police station, and just how neatly the case unfolds...minor gripe, but not the movie's high point...as good as most television dramas, for what it's worth...now spoiler, and major gripe...Jonas, the hubby, is scripted as such a self- righteous prick it almost makes the last twenty minutes of the film unwatchable...he is so arrogant, self congratulating, and two faced one really wants to just beat him down...badly...so, kudos to the players, the script writer, and director for giving us such an unlikable villain...too bad they also had to make him a self-proclaimed "Christian"...pretty sure Jesus would not have done what he does..
I'm Not Ashamed (2016)
A beautiful film about faith, hope, and love...above all else, love
Beautiful, inspiring story of faith, devotion, and above all else, of love. Not really too much of a spoiler, but truly a heart wrenching ending. One thing I especially found refreshing is this film makes no attempts to portray the Columbine killers as anything other than what they were...cold blooded murderous maniacs carrying out their evil little acts for some demented ideology...a truly beautiful film about how one person, even after passing on, can send ripples of hope and love on forever...well done...
Coffee Shop (2014)
A charming little movie...makes you believe in love once more...
A truly charming movie...predictable but that's what we want from romantic comedies, isn't it? Our heroine, the much beloved Donavan struggles to keep her coffee shop open and her love life afloat...excellent cast, a really solid script, and very well edited...hard not to cross at least a few clichés and barriers with this genre, but this one actually does not lean too heavily on the standards...highly recommended...makes you want to believe in love again...sigh
Alistair1918 (2015)
A lovely little film that makes one want to believe...
A wonderful little film...superbly acted, well scripted...makes one want to believe in time travel. Nothing too ambitious, just a small tale very well told...a soldier is launched forward in time, and desperately wishes to get home to a wife he is certain is waiting for him. Although some characters doubt his sanity and veracity, watching this one wants to believe him...all in all a lovely bit of cinema, and one of the few documentary style movies that actually delivers...bravo all...
