Oculus (2013)
Surprisingly good
I know that I'm a little late for reviewing this title. But, I just had to. This is one of the better horror movies in the past decade. I rarely give horror movies any higher than 6.
The movie starts off slow but the payoff is really worth it. This movie does not need to rely on jump-scares or gore to make it scary. It actually used suspense and used solid performances to make it a chilling and effective horror movie.
This is the rare horror movie that actually lingers in your mind and have you thinking. The constant time shifts also made it a really enjoyable and intriguing film.
Many of you have probably seen the trailer of this movie and thought that it was a lame, clichè jumpscare fest. But, the trailer really doesn't do the movie any justice. There is one particular scene where the protagonist mistakenly bites a lightbulb instead of an apple. That scene would probably get laughs in another kind of movie, but, not in this movie. Though, I am not saying that this movie is without its corny moments. Probably, most people will laugh at the sight of the protagonist telling the mirror," You must be hungry." But, overall, it is an effective horror movie that is actually about a haunted mirror.
Suicide Squad (2016)
Well, the movie isn't as bad as what some critics make it out to be....
I am not saying that the movie was a masterpiece or anything. If anything, it was a mindless popcorn thriller with barely any character development and just thrills all the way.
I have to say that the movie really should have given moments for each and every one of the cast to shine. But, they didn't. The focus is all on Harley Quinn( I am not saying that Margot Robbie was bad or anything in her role) and characters like Katanna and Killer Croc and Captain Boomerang barely have any lines in this movie.
And, don't even get me started on the horrible mess of its plot. Enchantress was a terrible villain and her motivation for trying to conquer the world is hardly ever explained. And we have to admit that she was a pretty crappy villain. She spent most of her screen time trying to build some crappy machine while she let her brother do all of the work.
But, those things aside, the first twenty minutes of the movie where they introduce the characters are stylish and cool. It might have been exposition-heavy, but it sure was fun to watch. And I was always somewhat entertained throughout the whole movie. Though, without Margot Robbie's performance, I would probably give this movie a 4 and a half stars. She definitely nailed the role. And she was one of the highlights of the movie.
Overall, it is a mediocre film.
Nerve (2016)
It was okay...
The characters are walking stereotypes. We have your shy and timid protagonist played by Emma Roberts, the hot guy who Emma Roberts will inevitably fall for,the cool- girl-who-is- actually-insecure and the computer geek. And the characters are really shallow. I found many of the motivations for their actions pretty stupid and shallow.
I sometimes wonder why Hollywood cannot think of any other teenage character traits. It ,sure, is getting boring using the same formula over and over again.
But, I am not saying that Nerve was entirely bad. The movie is actually much better than what the trailers make it out to be.
Despite the fact that the movie has plenty of plot-holes and an over-the-top ending that gets a pretty easy resolution, the movie was fun to watch. It is the kind of movie that you can only enjoy by turning your brain off.
The soundtrack is pretty cool at some points. A particular scene involving Emily Meades and a ladder was intense and had me at the edge of my seat. Unfortunately, that was one of the only really intense scenes of the movie. The chemistry between Emma Roberts and Dave Franco is fine.
Overall, it was an average teen movie.
Sadako vs Kayako (2016)
This is only my opinion..
This movie is overloaded with cheap thrills, clichés ,had some bad dialogue and the ending was so silly. One really weird and crazy scene of the movie is when the two ghosts(this is a massive spoiler) merge together and start attacking the protagonist. The characters make all sorts of dumb decisions.A few scenes make you sigh as you know where they are going. The fight scene made the whole audience members laugh. But,the atmosphere was well done. The special effects were pretty good.
Some of the scares were over-the-top and comical. In one scene, both of a woman's legs vanish without a trace, leaving her with two bloody stumps. That scene made many people burst into laughter.
I felt a little bored at all the cheap thrills in the middle of the movie and was tempted to leave. Overall, it is a mediocre movie.
