Brooklyn 45 (2023)
Supernatural Agatha Christie Play Without the Agatha Christie
How much better would the ending have been if at the end there had been a bloodbath with only Marla and Hilde left alive - Bob, Archie and Paul all dying fighting over the gun, maybe one picking up the knife and using it. Then.....Hilde says something in German that Marla recognises only a Nazi would say. Drum roll.... Hilde really was a Nazi and she did murder Clive's wife Susan.
But that's not what happened. Seems like Hilde had to die for some reason only spineless Bob knew.
Great acting, presented as a proper play but let down by the writing. All very one dimensional, no surprises in the writing, no ulterior motives, no red herrings, no misdirection ....all very flat and straight forward. My ending would've been superb.....if I say so myself.
The Lodge (2019)
A laughable (would never happen) situation
The father is a psychologist who then got together with a very disturbed teenage patient ( isn't that against his Hippocratic oath or something) . His children's mother was so upset she blew her brains out....so we have another two mentally fragile kids. 6 months later the father leaves all three alone in a cabin at Christmas, snow everywhere....oh yeah, his kids blame the new partner for their mother's death and have never met her before. Would a dad, a psychiatrist do that? In the real world that would never happen in a million years, and that's the whole premise of the film - they're left together. I mean it's utterly pathetic really and an insult to the audience. What's the point of reviewing the rest when it's nonsense, fantasy. If you can't think of a better way to strand them together then make another film....having the father toddle off happy as Larry is a bigger shock than any other in the film.
House of Darkness (2022)
I've Seen Student Films Infinitely Better Than This
I've heard of Neil LaBute, don't know how but I had and so somehow he's made a name for himself. Well it's all gone to waste with this awful pile of s**t. The two stars have got engaged in real life, that surprises me as they didn't have any onscreen chemistry, must've saved it for offscreen. This is the sort of nonsense people do to get out of contracts, like Lou Reed owed RCA two albums so he recorded a synth for 45 mins, reversed it and had a double album - the biggest joke of all, RCA released it, pml. I can only think this is LaBute getting out of a contact, it's the cinematic Metal Machine Music.
Awake (2021)
They Could've Slept if Only They'd Watched This Film
I can't claim to have watched all of this film because I really couldn't be bothered. The acting is ok but unfortunately the film is dull. A decent character is sacrificed early on only to make a point that religious people, when there's a crisis, turn into delusional homicidal murderers. It reminded me of a Stephen King film, not a particular one, just one of the bad ones. Netflix pay well and that's probably why there's a few famous faces in small parts. Ms Rodriguez is a very good actress and carries the film but even she seems to be firing on only one cylinder. If they edited out the violent parts this could be shown in the afternoon and people would think it was a quirky tv film. I'd rate it a 4.
65 (2023)
5/10 is flattering
People seem to be praising the writers because of A Quiet Place 1&2 ...but it's clear from watching those they don't care about plot holes. If asteroids are circling a planet as in 'asteroid belt' how can you hit them head on?....unless you're in the belt travelling in the opposite direction. The ship didn't detect them in advance and yet later on a little hand held device used from the planet detected them in advance. Switch your brain off. See how many incidents you can spot pinched from other films. This was very lazy writing. Compare the depth of this film to Peter Jackson's King Kong. No comparison. A B movie dressed up as an A movie. Very disappointing.
Invasion (2021)
Invasion of the Head Scratchers
An alien arrives finally in episode 5. It's all filmed in pitch black dark that you can't see it. It gurgles though so you know it's there. It's probably the worse thing I've seen....not the alien in the dark, the series. Complete waste of time. Interminable.
All Is True (2018)
Ben Elton Surprises
This might not be based on truth but it is none the less extremely good. I loved the way it Ben Elton humanises him. To think that Shakespeare, a man who more than anyone understood the human condition, would pay to have a silly coat of arms above his door, would allow himself to be bullied by the awful local politician. All this astonishes the Earl of Southampton who cannot reconcile the greatest mind with such tediousness. The acting is great, Judy Dench gets all the funny lines and delivers the sarcasm perfectly.
