Party Night (I) (2017)

Pointless...
13 September 2018
Yet another film that wants to imitate the slasher of the 80's. Why do this?? Why not just get a slasher from the 80's?!! It is so rare that these "Neo Retro" films actually work, but hipster directors still churn them out. So we have a bunch of kids who skip the prom after-party and go to a secluded cabin instead, where they all end up being slaughtered (even the kills are totally unimaginative!) The film sounds as if it was recorded in someone's bathroom. You are never told who the killer is or why he is killing. Most of the film is just terrible acting and drinking beer. The critics praised the acting of the "final girl", but I've seen sheep act more convincingly! The only thing at all decent about this movie is the great retro poster art.

Gutted!
20 August 2018
All I can say is that any film that has Alaska Thunderfuck in it will get my vote (if you still don't know who Alaska Thunderfuck is you should be ASHAMED of yourself!)! This is such a brilliant end to the series, with everyone from previous installments coming back for one final hoorah. There are dinos, civil war battles, sharks, Tara Reid.... this is probably more fun than a Dwayne Johnson movie! I am genuinely sad to see this hilarious and inventive franchise come to an end. In fact, I'm gutted!

Dead Night? Dead boring...
2 August 2018
I don't know what this film was trying to be - fake documentary, monster in the woods, slasher, psycho.... What I DO know is it failed on all counts. The acting was just too terrible, the characters totally unbelievable (that upbeat father was meant to be dying of cancer!), the editing really bad, the violence too staged....ok the outdoor lighting was great. I really wanted to like this film because the opening scene is gnarly as hell. Pity it all goes to s%$# from there.

Here piggy piggy...
27 July 2018
Crude, rude and full of poop...this is not a film for the faint of heart or those with a tummy bug! Forget the plot about cabals and the Illuminati, just go with it, as a suburban housewife and her children infiltrate a facility housing adult babies who are turning into pigs...yeah, pigs! Loads of in-jokes ("I've come to get you, Barbara") and insane visuals give this film a reason to be watched. It is a straight to cult status movie, reminding me a lot of Peter Jackson's "Bad Taste". The gore is great and the screenplay twisted as hell. I loved this film and recommend it to anyone who enjoys their entertainment truly grotesque and hysterical.

MTV mashup...

Warning: Spoilers
Murders are happening on campus and a freshman discovers "dark secrets" about the sorority she's pledging...and at 17mins in you will easily guess who the killer is. The headache-inducing editing and cringe-worthy acting make this a must-see for masochists and those who like their eyes to bleed. I've seen better quality films shot on an iPhone. The director is obviously going for a hip, happening kind of style that will cater to the dumbed down teenage market. The only problem is that even the teenage market expects more than this trite trash. Perhaps some naked boobs would have helped here, but even that is denied the discerning viewer (can't show naked boobies to under 14's!) Seriously though, this film is just a mess from start to finish. I've seen scarier Slipknot videos!

Ghost Storm (2011 TV Movie)

Wonderfully mindless entertainment
23 July 2018
As I've often said in my Facebook group Jaded Horror Hound, SyFy Channel films are generally terrible. One or two that I've seen hit the spot (Flight 666 for example), and here we have another one that gets most of it right and totally entertains. It's about a strange electrical storm which is led by angry souls from a mass suicide looking for revenge on the townsfolk of a small island community. Passable CGI FX, relatively good acting and some rather nice camera work, all prove that SyFy can release some semi-decent films when they want to. Cut and paste this may be, but it's non stop action and exploding bodies turning to ash all the way! I'm actually gonna keep this in my collection....

If you go down to the woods today...
22 July 2018
This film surprised me by being WAY better than I expected. The concept is great, the "traps" are cool and the double twist at the end is exactly as it should be. The acting is better than most Slasher films and the gore is quite good. You are never quite sure what is part of the game and what is not. Or is it ALL part of the game? Highly recommended for all Horror/Slasher fans.

Hairy mop with botox lips...
4 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
A guy and his girl go camping. Bigfoot steals the girl. Guy goes to loony bin and a year later his mother tells him to go back to the woods and get revenge. Most of the film is walking in the woods, falling into the smooshed remains of his girl and screaming at the sky. The monster appears in the last 15mins looking like a mop with botoxed lips.Fighting ensues. A car blows up. Our hero (?) ends up in hospital. Lance Henriksen is there in a wheelchair and wants to recruit our hero (?) for a team of monster hunters. The film ends. Utter garbage.

Not as bad as you may think...
17 April 2018
Interesting, if somewhat predictable, film about a young girl found locked in the attic of her house. She is saved by Liv Tyler, but is she really the one who needs saving, or should all the other characters run for the hills? Great acting all round make this very thin plot work. Beautiful camera work and lighting also add to the illusion that this is a big budget movie (It isn't. It's a cheap little indie pic). Def worth a watch to see the lead actress (Bel Powley) act everyone else off the screen.

Ultra B-film mayhem
15 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Boobs, body parts and gore are the order of the day in this weird B-film that defies all the laws of cinema and entertains deliciously, even though it is so bad....oh, so so bad! Tara Reid is in it for the first three minutes and is then dispatched in a startling, yet perfectly apt way - I think many of us have wanted to push her in front of a large moving vehicle! Most of the other female actors are strippers (one even brings her python along), and no one has ever heard of the male actors. This is a train smash of a film that keeps you glued to the screen just to see if it can get any worse! Fortunately it DOES get worse!! NO one is taking the film seriously and all the actors look as if they're having a great time in the desert, throwing fake blood and rubber arms at each other. This film will score a def 10/10 if you get totally wasted and THEN watch it!

How to use a hacksaw
31 March 2018
Art the clown from All Hallows Eve is back, this time more evil and maniacal than ever before. David Howard Thornton creates a monster so horrific, so diabolical, he makes Freddy, Jason and Michael look like the three little pigs! This film will go down in history for the "hacksaw scene". It's so nasty even MY stomach did a slight heave! The acting here is really good. The practical make-up and gore effects are outstanding and the action doesn't stop. But the star of the show here is Art the clown as he chases and kills and disfigures. No explanation is given for who he is or where he comes from, but at the end of this film you realize that he is way more than you have been lead to believe.

Tokusatsu for the kids
29 August 2017
A "Tokusatsu" film is a Japanese genre, such as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It is filled with over the top imagery, puppet creatures, characters growing in size, etc. And yes. it is aimed at kids! This is a great Tokusatsu-inspired movie that will appeal to the 10 - 15 age group. The characters are sassy, the one liners are cute and funny, the story is exciting and the puppet-monsters are quite creepy.

If you understand that this film is NOT aimed at adults, you'll actually have a lot of fun watching it. It's a great way to introduce your kids to movies involving monsters and magic and villains...and I promise that you'll get as much of a kick out of this film as they do!

Masterful...and hollow.
24 August 2017
First allow me to say a few good things about this astonishing film - it is visually magnificent. The camera work is brilliant. The acting is superb. The segments of story are clever, entertaining and creepy as hell. The locations/sets are amazing. The concept is quite unique.

Unfortunately, it is probably the most boring film I have seen all year.

No matter how masterfully this film is crafted, it has no soul. There is nothing here to lure you in - I found I didn't care what happened to any of the characters, the good ones or the bad ones (that's simplifying things because there are no real good or bad here).

Watching this movie is like looking at a cake display through a window...it all looks so beautiful, but you can't smell or taste anything. Technically, this film scores a solid 8/10....as far as its entertainment value goes, I give it a 4/10.

But then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

24 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Don't go in the woods...alone! - Take all the other characters with you so they can be killed off as quickly as possible! This 2017 film is about some extremely annoying young people who venture into the woods and get chased (and eventually killed) by an alien in search of its baby.

NOTE: Avoid at all costs. You have been warned.

Crazy Lake (2016)

You get exactly what you'd expect
24 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A really nice little Slasher film...it is mostly paint-by-numbers, with everything quite predictable (especially the last ten mins), but now and then a curve ball is thrown at the audience. Also nice to see the guys get stripped down to their undies and not only the girls for a change! So a bunch of youngsters head off to a cabin by the lake and get slaughtered by a maniac...there is a connection between one of the characters and the killer...there is a twist at the end...there is even a mid-credit surprise! I enjoyed this film because it gives you exactly what it promises - young people getting drunk, naked and doing extremely stupid things in the face of death. The film makes no excuses and does not try to be anything other than mindless fun. It's like a mash-up of an MTV music video and a really bad 80's slasher film. Best watched with your mates while drinking shooters.

7 Witches (2017)

Art-House pretensions that actually work
12 May 2017
I can honestly say that this will be one of the talked about films of 2017. It is beautifully filmed in faded splendor, an almost black and white film of discordant images, jarring score and an all-encompassing sense of dread.

The costumes the witches wear are beautiful, the more you look at them, the more detail you see. The character actors playing the witches are visually stunning, even though most of them don't have any dialogue. All I want to tell you about the plot to this film is that it takes place at a wedding ceremony set near a forest, along a coastline that is shrouded in fog. More than that you should not know. DO NOT watch the trailer to this film!! It gives everything away.

The film is only 71mins long. Just long enough to get all the hair on the back of your neck standing up. The film is almost art-house in design and execution, but just remains this side of mainstream so as to be accessible to all. It is not a film that relies on gore for effect, but rather places the audience into a very uncomfortable atmosphere.

If you enjoy films such as "The Witch", you are going to want this for your collection!

Bits and pieces...
9 March 2017
I was expecting this film to be awful...I'm not a fan of film anthologies, but this came recommended by a friend who knows his movies, so I thought, what the hell, let's do this! 8 little SciFi/Horror films (not just stories, but actual little films) presented in such a professional way, you forget it's all being done on a small Indie budget. Each film feels and looks like it could be a full length feature.

Although I didn't "get" one or two of the pieces, it is all so well done that it kept me highly entertained. Acting, direction, lightning, set design...it is all really good - none of it feels cheap or amateurish.

This won't win any awards, but it's fun. Watch it. I think you'll be surprised.

PS: Don't let the cheap and nasty cover art put you off!

If you go down to the woods today...
8 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Two brothers go into the woods on a hunting trip to repair their fractured relationship, only to find that they are not the only ones hunting! The star of this film is the scenery - the most beautiful forests and mountains and valleys, all filmed from the air. But as the characters get closer to danger, this all changes and the landscape becomes dry, denuded and barren.

There is a lot of time spent on the relationship of the two lead characters, but this is not at all boring because it is so realistic and the acting so strong. For me, the relationship between the brothers is a metaphor for our broken relationship with Nature; the creature, Nature itself getting payback for the damage inflicted by us.

There is a great twist ending to the film, which is always a favorite trope for me (I am an 80's "kid", when twists were mandatory!)...

I highly recommend this film and will be adding it to my collection.

The Institute (2017)

Patience is rewarded...
6 March 2017
The Victorians were renowned for institutionalizing their women for the slightest of reasons. The Victorian male's idea of equality was somewhat lopsided, to say the least. This film starts off as many in this genre, with a young woman going into an institute because of "nerves". Once there, she is subjected to a rather unorthodox treatment, the result of which culminates in far far darker and mysterious consequences.

The acting is good. The plot clever (if a little melodramatic). The characters believable. The film is more creepy than horrific, so no gore here. What it lacks in blood and guts, it makes up for in atmosphere.

I would recommend you NOT watch the trailer, as it does spoil the fun. The idea of the film is to lead you into the horror without you suspecting it. If you want a little something different to the usual stuff being churned out and called "Horror" these days, give this film a viewing. It is really quite enjoyable.

Baby it's cold outside...
24 July 2016
I review a LOT of films in my group Jaded Horror Hound on Facebook, but I was still not expecting this film to be what it was (if that makes any sense!) - I was expecting a slasher/crazy stalker film, and instead got....well, THIS! The story is simple - two girls left alone at a boarding school over the holidays. So I thought Yay! Slasher in a girl's dorm! But no... Then the film goes off at a tangent and introduces another character who is NOT at the school. She is hitching a ride with a married couple. So I thought, Yay! Kinky abduction movie!....well no, not that either. The less you know about the plot to this movie, the greater the shocks will be when they come. You are given tiny clues along the way that should make you realize what is happening, but they are subtle (if viewed for a second time, you'll be like "OMG why didn't I see that?!") To review this film in a way that won't give the game away is really very hard, so my advice is this - If you like stories with a twist and films that keep you guessing, not only about the plot but about the genre, this is the film for you. However, if you prefer the Catch-me-kill-me-rape-me (in that order!) type film, give this a miss. You just won't get it.
