The Portable Door (2023)
Meh.
I wanted to like this film, I really did. Sadly it comes across as a sort of 'Fantastic Beasts' but without the charm, fun and warmth.
It's difficult to engage with the characters when none of them are likeable, and the acting is just flat. Maybe the actors are a.i generated... that would at least explain the lack of emotion, commitment of passion.
The story despite having a good premise wanders around and doesn't really engage. I suspect the book is probably better.
It could be that I'm the wrong demograpic for the audience they were aiming for, perhaps young teens our low double digit kids will like it but for me it's a miss.
Shame, I think there could have been a good film in there.
Ink (2009)
Good grief
This film is the celluloid equivalent of the emperors new clothes. I watched it because of the buzz associated with it and its high rating on IMDb. It is without doubt one of the most pretentious , tedious pieces of film making it has ever been my misfortune to witness. This film isn't half as clever as it thinks it is , with narrative jumps , flash cuts , awful acting and laughable 'scripting'. It may be that this is meant to be esoteric and I'm just too dim to accept it as a construct , but I think it's fundamentally challenging the audience to care despite itself and I just didn't. The basic premise is good , if only they had executed it better , and made it watchable rather then risible.
Avoid at all costs , if you want weird quality film making watch City of Lost Children instead.
I Am Legend (2007)
Don't believe the haters......
Excellent acting from Will Smith. There is a real sense of dread and claustrophobia throughout , built through the handycam 'documentary' style camera-work.The tight closeups with accompanying atmospheric soundtrack and not having a wide field of vision make the viewer wonder what's there....waiting. A realistic depiction of desolation and loneliness , NOT an action film but a slow burn tension builder with bursts of adrenaline. The CGI isn't the best but I'd rather have a well conceived and executed film with slightly below par cgi than a vacuous one with state of the art 'graphics'. As for people moaning about the script - there isn't much - he's on his own for heavens sake - and at no point did what was said jar. For Will Smith to hold a film for an hour forty with minimal script and have the viewer absorbed is testament to his performance.
Watch it - it's a good film.
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
Stephen Fry was right
Haven't read the book (descibed as 'arsewater of the vilest kind' by Stephen Fry).
Went to see the film and although | have no problem with the central premise ,not being the religious type.... (Deep breath) The acting is poor , the pacing is awful , the script is trite , the albino monk is laughable , and the film boring as hell. Dan Brown must be laughing his ass off at the religious loonies drumming up business for this stinker. Ron Howard is currently running for the hills leaving a jet-stream of whirling dollar bills in his wake - I just hope he's got enough money to buy back his directorial reputation.
