Beautiful boring rubbish
6 March 2024
Rarely is a film so boring that I fall asleep - but I did for 20 minutes during this one. I dont think I missed anything good - before and after nodding off it was rubbish. Vacuous beautiful rubbish and without merit or empathy. Beautiful people and many movie stars does not a good movie make. There was a few laughs, but most attempts at humour were very contrived and obvious. The action scenes were was Ok but they had no meaning. Painting by numbers just does not work and this is a movie made using the standard formula. Me thinks this was some sort of favour for Ron Howard whose daughter has clearly been 'out to pasture' for too long and was never suitable for the lead role in a movie.

Music and Politics dont mix well
12 December 2023
U2 are an excellent band with some great music. But it is clear to most people that Bono used that as a political platform to harang people with a message that is at best progressive and at worst virtue signalling. I do not understand how some famous people think that they have any understanding of the complexities of human life as if they are something special. I found Bono's social justice campaigns to be a total bore that showed his shallowness and superficiality and a waste of his immense talent - he should have listened to Mick Jagger etc. And just stayed out of it. Or better still make massive anonymous donations to those doing the work and encourage others to do so too.

What could have been
6 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Unfortunately the writers/producer did not take the opportunity to create a really good movie. Instead they stuck to the original story with the aim of creating a series. Direction, acting, filming, sound etc etc are all great. But as the movie develops to the crucial point when everyone on board finally realises what is going on - the obvious thing to do (scuttle the ship) just does not happen. Several days and nights, when more are lost, go by before they try. And of course they try - at night - when they are near the shore and Dracula survives. A very stupid ending ruined what should have been a very good movie. Easy Fix - if the movie is a hit - in the sequel it ends up that it was not Dracula but his Brother.

New Role for Movies - Stupid Plot Assessor - reviews the plot before the filming stars - and stays involved until the final edit.

Extraction II (2023)

The way an action sequel should be
22 June 2023
Extraction 2 is exactly how a sequel should be - more of the same and also some even better action than the first. Believable characters well acted and well directed, but the choreography and cinematography is just brilliant - it makes JW4 look a little 'slow'. So little to criticise, except for perhaps the young boy who was obviously going to do what we could all see he would do, but the rest of the movie characters somehow could not see the obvious. Hemsworth yet again delivers, and although Golshifteh Farahani was solid in the first movie, in this one she is fantastic - I wish all of Hollywood realised this is how a 'real' action female lead role should be done. She was absolutely brilliant and believable in both the action and drama scenes, and all done with no malice or hidden 'message'.

Great Idea Poorly Executed
3 June 2023
This could have been a great movie, but it was very poorly put together. The script was clunky and missing elements, and the directing was very poor. This is what happens when someone with an idea, tries to put it all together into a movie, but has a very limited understanding on how the story will be seen/accepted by the viewers. Rodriguez can clearly make a good movie, but he was too close to this as the writer, and did not have the perception to see that viewers would not understand. The twist and explanation came far too late - and there should have been much more about that -and much more after that. It was all a bit too confusing, and then OH ... OK, and then the movie ended. Great bones for a remake by someone else in the future.

I Am a Girl (2013)

Sad story of lives abused for political purposes
1 June 2023
Of course it is wrong - but that is the way it is in many places around the world. Girls need to be protected - from themselves, from others, from what life throws at them. The job belongs, and always has, and always will, to their fathers and brothers and mothers and family members. It is not the job of some bureaucracy to demand billions in funding to impose moral values upon other people in the name of what is right. The reason these girls are being exploited is very complex, but it is not a solution to have a bureaucracy act in the role of their father, brother, sister, mother. The solution is to address the complex society issues that result in the girls not being protected by those that should be doing that job - it is not to do that job.

Political Garbage with Poor Production
1 June 2023
As a movie this is technically awful - poor acting, poor direction, poor production - camera work and sound OK. But besides the poor quality of the actual movie, the premise and content is just rubbish. OK I knew it was gonna be a left-wing hit piece on Trump - but every single premise in this movie is wrong - except that men and women need each other, despite at times not being able to get along. Here is some advice to people who think like feminist lefty nutters - women have always 'ruled' the world and always will. It is what women do with that influence that really matters, not how they blame men for their failings.

After Earth was better - that is how bad it is
8 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So the Captain of a Spaceship that is on a 2 year mission, crash lands and behaves like Harrison Ford in Frantic? He is frantic and silly and makes idiotic decision after idiotic decision - yeh, right, perfect Captain behaviour. He somehow survives multiple encounters with dinosaurs - doing so many stupid things. Wait - there is more. A young girl also survives the crash and she starts behaving like a spoil brat whose Father said no to a pony. Annoying movie. Already paid for it - then skip the first 10 mins - watch the spaceship crashing - then skip to the end when the frantic (still) captain and annoying brat unite, and somehow kill 3 large dinosaurs, and then leave Earth just in time. Unbelievable and totally ridiculous movie.

Hollywood screws it up again
1 April 2023
Great special effects but an ignorant teenager focused story with lots of plot holes and overall a stupid nonsensical story. The first Avatar was one of the best films ever, not because of the special effects, but because of the story and interactions between adults. This movie plot was more about the kids and their problems, than it was about the adults involved. Clearly they set this up for Avatar 3, when they should have just joined the obvious next movie to this one. What idiots decided to make it all all about the special effects, put lots of focus on the kids, and turn it into a franchise. The biggest stupidity - and there was a lot - was when they all attacked the bad 'Sky People' ship, and then all of a sudden, all the others disappeared and it was Sully and his wife and their kids against all the bad guys. Where did all the hundreds of others go to? They all charged the bad guys together - and then the others were just 'gone'.

An under rated movie
21 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
While annoying some pundits by killing off Ryan Reynolds in the film's beginning, the movie's main failure was to try and make it uncomplicated and more action oriented for the American audiences. By removing the strong role that Reynold's character had in the book, and was probably filmed but later edited out in the final stages of production, the movie became disjointed and too simplistic. Likewise, the role of the CIA boss played by Gary Oldman was just overblown and ridiculous - he was a Harrison Ford on steroids (frantic beyond belief). I would not be surprised that if the original film was obtained and it was re-edited and re-produced to more closely follow the book, and not some cheap American action flick, it could be made into a very good movie.

A great start that went nowhere
15 February 2023
This was one of the best opening episodes to a TV series for many years - I assume that and episode 2 was when many high ratings were given, But by episode 3 I was beginning to think it was another 'Lost' and not another 'GOT'. By episode 4 I was getting frustrated that the writers decided to pad out all the personal interactions between boring people who did think rationally about the situation they were in. I was reminded of that 'scary movie' send up scene where the screaming girl has a choice to grab a gun or a banana - and she grabbed the banana. Seriously, do young modern scriptwriters have any critical reviews done of what they are writing? People are just not as stupid and irrationally emotional as portrayed in this show. And audiences dont give a rat's rear about 30+ year old actors pretending to be teenagers with relationship problems, when there is something far far far more serious going on. I dont care where this came from, but it is not going anywhere further with me.

80th Golden Globe Awards (2023 TV Special)

Irrelevant Show - waste of time and money
18 January 2023
Like most people I have very litle interest in these awards shows - just look at the lack of reviews. I skipped through it as much as possible, but nothing made it any better.

The Host was a shocker - he was son 'safe and boring' that I am sure many people there fell asleep. There was no energy and no friction.

Sure Will smaking Chris was out of order, and so was his comment about Will's wife, and we dont want that again. But there needs to be some 'action' and some 'feeling'.

This is what happens when you dont try so hard not to offend or upset anyone - it means that you bore the hell out of everyone.

Like many people I didnt watch it all and just looked up all the winners the next day.

The Old Way (2023)

What could have been
16 January 2023
Nicolas Cage is very strange these days, but he certainly has a huge cult following who love him and his movies. Cage actually throws himself into the roles and usually tries hard - he can be brilliant at times and he can also be atrocious - on the same day.

Most of Cage's roles are 'basic' nowadays and the movies overall are ordinary - except maybe for the movies Pig and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. He is an extremely talented but flawed and screwed up actor and he knows it - but accepts it - he is a flawed genius. His Academy Award was justified - he was/is brilliant.

The thing about The Old Way movie that some reviewers have said, and I agree with, is that he should have done westerns before. This was Cage's first western and I agree with them that he could have been a great western actor - especially as a bad guy.

When Henry Fonda was in his 60s in 1968, he starred in a western movie as 'the bad guy' - he was absolutely brilliant - Once Upon a Time in the West. He had that manner and 'those eyes' - his part in that movie made the career of Charles Bronson and 'approved' the western movies that had made Clint Eastwood popular.

I reckon Cage would be the same if he could get into a big budget western movie - he has that look and manner - an old gunslinger wanting to die in a gun fight - and he can act (when he wants/needs to). Cage has that look and style of a old school bad guy gunslinger - like Henry Fonda did - no one else before or since could have played that role - until Cage IMO.

Maybe he should contact Clint Eastwood and see if he wants to direct one last western, with him as the bad guy.

Bandit (2022)

Good solid and enjoyable movie
17 October 2022
Good solid movie about the true story of how a career con man and lucky escape artist stumbles upon how to rob banks and get away with it. Unlike so many other movies these days this is solidly made with good acting and solid direction and a good screenplay.

Mel Gibson is not on camera much, but his scenes hold the movie together very well as things progress in the life of the bandit. Seems that Mel these days is appearing in many of these action movies with a small but critical part. Unlike some others though, the movies he appear in are generally OK - not many duds.

The ending is a bit weak, but that is what actually happened and that was what they had to work with. Overall a very enjoyable movie to watch.

Expected More - Much More
17 October 2022
Sometimes movie Directors and/or Producers make a movie that is too long for the plot, and this is one of those movies. The acting, directing, production, effects, sound, are all good. But the plot is too thin and it is very clear that the screen play was stretched out way too far - and it broke. So many movies these days are 'what could have been' - and this is one of them. What could have been a little gem, was cut and polished so much that it ended up all broken and disjointed. Movies are not shot sequentially so the end to end screenplay has to actually work - before production even starts. I anticipate that a far better movie will be put together on this premise, sometime in the future. My suggestion - run a parallel story line with what happens to the people down on Earth - that will make a 90 mins movie possible.

Premise completely false - Doco OK
15 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is what happens when educated people spend their entire adult lives researching one theory. Eventually they find enough threads of evidence to claim something deep and mysterious. What they are really doing is justifying their life's research. Although the premise was ridiculous, their committed beliefs and inside knowledge of the hidden details of Flora lifeforms was fascinating. But it was very clear to see that their need to 'prove' something that did not exist, meant they over looked the more realistic reality. All life forms are linked together - from bacteria to plants to animals. Each animal is thousands of separate life forms working together for a common goal - survival. All plant life works together for survival - better with its own species, but also with many others - but not with some species they they compete with - and the strongest and more adaptive survive. Intelligence? No. Planned? No. Miraculous? Yes.

Unfunny Exploitation of a Minority Group
6 October 2022
I was OK to go and watch it - but sure wished I did not. Boring and unfunny movie trying desperately to publicise a lifestyle, at the expense of plot, acting, and humour. What matters in a movie is entertainment - not some social agenda. Best example I can think of is a movie called Old Guard - there are two characters in the film who were a gay male couple and it worked perfectly because it added to the story. This was not that sort of a movie - it is so bad that even the gay community did not go to see it - only the activists and curious and the art for arts sake crowd. That who the movie is made and that is fine - but it was not for me I am afraid - and I am not homophobic for saying that I did not like the movie - OK?

Awesome Movie - Great Fun and Meaning
28 September 2022
Wow - rarely does a movie hit the mark so well - this is the best action movie since Tarantino did Pulp Fiction - David Leitch should feel proud of this - his best work yet. The script was awesome and the direction tight and extremely well done. There are so many good things about this movie that it is hard to say one part was the best - but I would have to say that the Casting was even better than Pulp Fiction - at least its equal. From Brad Pitt as the 'leaf in the wind' trying to find meaning in life as chaos falls all around him, through to the brief cameo roles played by established stars - the casting was perfect and their timing outstanding. I was also very dubious that whoever was to going to be the main villain could possibly fill the role - it built up through the movie and was the axle around which the whole movie turned - but Michael Shannon was awesome - absolutely perfect. Just Wow.

Most stupid movie this Century
9 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The Writers and Director should be never allowed to work again. This is the most stupid movie I ever recall seeing - I was cheering for the Lion after a while - killing the main characters would be been best for the human gene pool. In terms of acting Idris Elba, as always, was good - Sharlto Copley was also good - the two girls were both wooden and annoying (hard to do). But the Dialogue and Plot - surely someone in the movie crew would have said - hey that is just ridiculously stupid - and that - and that - and that - etc etc etc.

Want to know the biggest one? They are stuck inside a 4WD with a huge vicious lion hunting them - a side window is broken early in their first of many 'engagements' with the lion. The lion retreats (obviously to come back) - but the window remains open and unblocked for many hours (rest of day, into the night, and the next day). There was many opportunities to put something there - and lots of heavy objects inside the 4WD - and they had plenty of time (including them sleeping). Towards the end of the movie (of course) the lion eventually realises it can jump through the open window and thus it attacks and causes Sharlto's character to die. I could go on and on and on - suffice to say the main 4 characters in this movie all deserved to die - but only 1 did - and of course so did the lion.

Absolutely ridiculous movie.

Best action movie since Deadpool
30 July 2022
Very solid and tightly produced action movie with plenty of exciting moments and solid acting. Chris Evans excels as a sociopathic killer and Ryan Gosling was amazing as the 'good killer'. Ryan reminded me of his role in Blade Runner 2047 with his dead-pan unemotional and controlled temperament. No woke rubbish and finally a teenage girl role that is like a teenager should be in a violent movie. It was great that the movie was not all about her - even though she centres everything. Excellent violent action movie. Maybe US movie makers are finally realising that Top Gun is what movie watchers want to see - not social messages and woke rubbish.

Awesome Old Fashioned Epic with No Woke
20 July 2022
All the usual superlatives of most Tom Cruise action movies - Direction, Production, Casting, Script - with some very good acting from Tom beyond his usual range. Strong women roles without all the woke rubbish, with strong male roles not being held back. Loved it - again and again. With all the records broken, I hope Hollywood now moves away from its work directive of ridiculous female roles, ridiculed male roles, and teenage princesses saving the world.

CGI and demeaning superheros does not a movie make
9 July 2022
If they wanted to make a movie that would kill of the superhero franchises, I guess this is what they tried to do. But then again, this comic books based CGI action theme was always destined to go the way of all the other 'popular' themes like musicals, westerns, 3D, etc etc. What we started to see during Covid and are seeing more now, especially with Spider Man, Thor and Jurassic World is the declining end-game of the CGI based action hero movies. I guess Iron Man saw it coming and got out in time with his dignity intact - end game indeed. I wonder what will become popular next. I hope it involves mainly adults and intelligent dialogue (mostly) and rational plots that are well directed and produced, with quality actors giving their all for their art - you know, like it used to be. I am sick of western teenage girl targeted movies - hopefully they will grow up soon.

More woke ruinination of movies - plot lost
9 July 2022
This was probably the longest plot loss in movie history, with the most ridiculous or premise - that humans and dinosaurs should learn to accept and live with each other. Plus of course all the other woke quota system about the actors in the movie. This is what happens when the people making the movie are more concerned with the 'social constructs' than they are about the actual movie. Obviously this movie is aimed to influence those who have no real idea how life actually works (children), and those adults who believe that "love and harmony between all people is achievable if everyone else was like me". Dont waste the little money you have watching this now. .

Great visuals and action with very good actors - but huge plot hole
5 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has great visuals and action scenes that are both credible and exciting. There are many very good actors who all do their role well. But there is a huge plot hole that I could not ignore. The Earth is completely screwed with bad air and not enough food and water, and is massively over-crowded. Which is the reason the elite built their orbiting 'utopia' Elysium. So the movie progresses towards letting all the people on Earth get the advanced medical care available to all on Elysium. Hello - so now the planet is full of healthy people cured of all illnesses - but with bad air and not enough food and water, and is massively over-crowded - and now it is going to be even more over-populated. Doh. It would make sense if there was some 'secret' technology that Elysium held that would fix the planet - but the elite was holding it back so that they could keep using the humans below working in their factories. But that huge plot hole appears about half way into the movie and it is never addressed or mentioned.

Good solid western movie
4 July 2022
This is a good.and solid western with a strong female lead and Gina Carano does it better than any female actor could. Ignore the hypocritical liberal hate reviews because Gina was 'cancelled' - and ignore the 10s from those supporting her. This is a good western - this sort of thing did happen back then, usually without the woman being able yo fight back.
