Escape Room (I) (2019)
6/10
It does what it's supposed to do
4 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Let's be honest: no one is watching this movie with crazy expectations. If you're expecting a decent thriller under the condition that you suspend all belief, that's exactly what you're going to get with this movie. It's nothing amazing here but it did have potential to get a full 7 stars had it not been for a lazy plot twist involving the character Jason.

All of the characters throughout the movie are revealed to have been sole survivors in freak accidents that killed everyone else involved. Jason, for example, was lost in the middle of the ocean with his roommate. It is revealed in the third act that Jason killed his roommate so that he could have a better chance of surviving. Revealing Jason to be a psychopath works well as a plot twist out of context but in the context of the movie it was lazily done.

Jason wasn't shown the be the greatest guy of the bunch. In fact, he quickly shrugged off a couple deaths before the villainous reveal but he also had moments of consideration. It's assumed that he killed his roommate so that he wouldn't have to share a winter jacket under freezing conditions but during the game he had no qualms with sharing the winter jacket. There was also a room where the movie's lead, Zoey, nearly died had she not been saved by Jason who risked his life for her. I guess the hints to his true character was his ability to shake off the deaths of complete strangers.

And while I'm on the discussion of complete strangers, you have to love a movie that spells out just how dispensable their characters are. The movie starts with introductions to Zoey, Jason, and Ben living their everyday lives before entering the escape room. Then, once they go into the escape room, the movie introduces three other characters who come from nowhere. You know right away that those three are going to die for sure just based on the fact that they appeared from thin air.

During the beginning of the third act, Zoey decides to fight back by destroying all of the cameras in a room that's designed to poison the players. I loved that the lead decided to fight back instead of playing but, again, the execution was lazily done and absolutely depended on belief suspension. Zoey, under the effects of poison gas, faints to the ground, foaming at the mouth while she does so. A few scenes later, it's revealed that she used an oxygen mask from the ceiling to survive the gas attack. However, that scenario alone comes with many questions. Why would the game master even bother putting an oxygen mask in the room if he wants all of the players to die? And am I expected to believe that Zoey got back up after *nearly (I suppose)* choking to death?

And then there's also that big brother element that lacks any realism. Everything in the building that supported the impossible escape rooms disappeared in the matter of a few hours. If I was foolish enough to believe that an enormous crew could dismantle six escape rooms in a few hours then it still wouldn't explain the willingness for everyone involved. It relies on Purge logic in that there are millions of people who are into observing and creating violence.

All of that said, it ended on a great note where Zoey is trying to hunt down the game master. It actually has me very interested in a sequel; assuming we get to see more of Zoey being a vengeful badass.

Quadruple-Exposed Tyler Perry Trife... where does it end?
10 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not one of those people who hates any Tyler Perry production by default. In fact, I usually enjoy his work. But this movie is the bottom of the barrel. The movie can be described simply as a clichéd, preachy mess smothered in misogynistic undertones.

The movie opens with Shirley and Aunt Bam in the hospital. We're supposed to be getting a quick laugh at Aunt Bam's forwardness towards the doctor. She's pretty much grinding on him like they're on a dance floor and I suppose the audience was supposed to find it funny but it only caused for a few awkward laughs of the "is this supposed to be funny...?" variety. Shirley finds out that her cancer has returned and she starts preaching about how God is so amazing. Riiiight... because when cancer survivors find out that their cancer has returned, they thank God for it. Eye rolls are surely to ensue and that opening scene sets the tone for the entire movie.

Shirley wants to get all her children together for a family dinner so she can break the news to them but contrary to the misleading title, they're no Brady Bunch. The two sisters, Kimberly and Tammy, can't even sit in the same room together without insulting each other. Both sisters are convinced that the other sister is a despicable human being, unbeknownst to themselves that they're both unbearable. And the younger brother, Byron, doesn't even interact with the sisters at all. Not being he can't stand them, just because they never gave enough damns to have him share a single word with either sisters. Instead, he's caught up in his baby mama drama.

Byron's storyline is the most ridiculous if only for how unbelievable his girlfriend, Renee, and ex-girlfriend, Sabrina are. Renee doesn't even pretend to give a damn about his well being, his son, or his family. She's pressuring him to sell drugs like it's rehab for a alcoholic. At one point when he loses his integrity and gives into the temptation of quick money, she tells him "I'm proud of you". And somehow, he still manages to stay with her through most of the movie. All the while, his baby mama, Sabrina, finds every way to ruin his life but apparently, it's because she still wants him.

The side plot with Tammy is insulting, to say the least. She's a terrible mother and a disrespectful wife. She finds every opportunity to belittle her husband in front of her children and neither parents makes an attempt to discipline the kids when they call their dad a "punk ass" on separate occasions. Oh, but you want to know how they resolve their problem? Harold, the husband, stands up for himself. And by "stand up for himself", I mean doing exactly to his wife what she does to him by demanding her to shut up and sit down. What is the moral of the story? There's no equality in a relationship: You're either the sandwich-eater or the sandwich-maker. But at least when it's the man in the relationship, it's okay.

Kimberly's side plot is... I don't even know. It's the same thing as Tammy's, except that her husband, Calvin, sometimes TRIES to defend himself. And she's more open about her desire of having nothing to do with her dysfunctional, emotionally abusive family. Somewhere near the ending of the 2nd act, Tammy exposes Kimberly at a family dinner about how she had a baby at 13 and left Shirley to raise him. Lo and behold, it's Byron. And that still wasn't enough to get him to share a single line with his "sisters". Also, we find out that the pregnancy was a result of rape and that's why she's such a terrible person. And voilà! We're left to assume that everyone knowing that she was raped was going to make her a better person.

There's isn't very many funny parts in the movie aside from Sabrina's "Byreeeeeen!" gag. Madea isn't even enough to save this movie from the contradictory life lessons and the overexposed themes of baby mama drama, God-fearing mothers with their preachy speeches, and rape. It's the same thing in every movie and it's passed tired.

Dare to Define Mediocrity
23 March 2010
'Dare' is pretty much what you'd expect from a low-budget indie film: Lazy direction and pretentious storytelling. The standards for indie films are pretty low and this movie is one of those movies that does nothing to change that.

Every character pits him or herself into the perfect mold of dramatic archetypes (minor roles included). The female lead, Alexa, played by a modest Emmy Rossum, is your typical high school overachiever who breaks out of her shell after a moment of foreseeable clarity. Playing a character that's easy to hate, Emmy works well with the distasteful card she was dealt. Ashley Springer's character Ben, however, doesn't get the benefit of the doubt. The unyielding character is completely unlikable throughout the whole movie and he falls victim to being portrayed by an inconsistent actor. Johnny Drake, the biggest cliché of film history, is the only likable character. Zach Gilford shows range in his acting abilities by breaking away from his awkward roles to play the "bad boy" with a heart of gold.

Everything about this movie reeks of presumptuous "raw" perspectives of teen life and sexuality. Unfortunately, the unapologetic principle that drives the plot forward isn't enough to save it from the dull progression, simple dialogue and contradictory character development. The writer, David Brind, gives me the impression that he wrote this script overnight with help from a 13 year old companion of his.

The film is directed by Adam Salky, who's lack of any relevant experience is evident. The atmosphere of the film is nonexistent. The characters had might as well been in subspace. Salky does absolutely nothing to build an environment for the viewers. Mid-shots are as close as we get to a setting. The worst part is that the movie tries to feed off that false feeling of genuine temperance with its weary direction. It didn't work.

I do, however, applaud Brind for having the courage to portray sexuality in ways that mainstream writers are scared to (even in today's more open-minded society). Unfortunately, all applauds come to an abrupt pause as the credits roll. The ending is yet another "profound" attempt at open-endings. Don't get me wrong. I don't always need everything wrapped together with a pretty little bow but there's only so many gaps that a viewer should fill on his own, don't ya think?

Umm... It had nice fight scenes!
18 April 2009
I won't lie. I am a Dragonball fan. I've followed the show from the very beginning right to the end. I remember running home from school everyday just so I can catch DBZ when it aired. That said, my beef with the movie is NOT because it didn't follow the anime closely. I'm not a purist when it comes to these things and I enjoy quality in whichever form I can get it.

The movie, for the first half was pretty fun. I liked seeing the modernized version of DB with Goku as a teen, dealing with high school bullies and all. It was pretty entertaining but unfortunately it only lasts for the first 15 or so minutes. After that the movie becomes a chaotic fast track.

The movie moved too fast for me. It didn't really take the time to stop and take a whiff of fresh air. The gang is always on the move and it ultimately turns out to be a lot of crazy, inexplicable mess. Not to mention that it was extremely cheesy and too cartoony sometimes. It might've been nice for the little kids but those of us who grew up watching DBZ are grown now.

The characters all turn out to be one-dimensional. There's NO character development from anyone's perspective. Goku may have had a tad bit of development but not as much as you'd expect for the main character. Especially when you consider the fact that the movie was all about "Being who you are inside" and all that corny mumbo-jumbo.

The acting was... god. Justin Chatwin and Jamie Chung were the only ones who seemed natural. Emmy Rossum had great facial expressions but her voice seemed too animated for me. She didn't have any chemistry with the rest of the cast and sometimes I thought she may have been too uncomfortable. And DO NOT get me started on Joon Park. He was HORRIBLE. He reminded me of a surfer dude from a 70s movie(you know, when the acting was SUPPOSED to be campy). And as a Buffy fan, I gotta say that James Marsters was upsetting. He obviously didn't put himself into the role.

The directing was lazy. Straight and simple. The only time it seems the director put forth the extra effort was during a fight scene. Everything else was... blah. But, you should expect that from a movie where there's no effort in development. Bulma and Yamcha's "relationship" came from nowhere. One minute they were arguing and the next minute they were having a one-on-one. Ridiculous.

Overall, it was an EPIC fail. It was just a fail.

27 Dresses (2008)
6/10
27 Dresses..? Saw it 27 times.
30 January 2008
Out of a good conscious, I cannot give this movie anything higher than a 6, although, sometimes I think it deserves even less. This movie followed the conventional script by EVERY step. Basic plot: single white female, hardly/never been a real relationship, finds the right guy under the wrong circumstances. These romcoms are particularly set in New York City(like 27 Dresses) or in a country town.

At this point, I could pretty much give you detail to detail without checking the spoiler marker and I doubt anyone would be upset at me. You don't need to watch this at all to know the beginning, middle, and end of the movie.

The beginning contrives of the childhood moment, followed by character introductions. It has the I'm-better-than-you younger sibling, the supportive parent(s), and the complete opposite best friend(played by Judy Greer, once again).

The middle consist of the turning point where the main character begins to fall for the leading male role(to my surprise, James Marsden played the lead and not the "other man" this time around) but completely denies it until the ending of the middle, which is usually followed by the embarrassing climax of the movie... that follows with a melancholic montage.

The ending... *sigh* the most predictable of them all. The leading female comes to the realization of her mistakes and through some usually comedic last-minute scenarios, she apologizes and get her man.

We saw this over and over. I'm seriously not one to complain about predictable movies. I can watch the cliché romcom and still enjoy them... if they are enjoyable. This was, in fact, enjoyable. I laughed, I smiled, I frowned, and then I said "awwww!" as the credits were rolling, in that exact order. It was nothing new.

Bottom Line: If you like the cliché, then you'll LOVE this movie.

In a Heartbeat (2000–2001)
10/10
Disney's only TRUE teen drama
17 May 2007
Okay, Disney is known for a lot of shows with teen elements. Lizzie McGuire dealt with a few teen issues, and so did The Famous Jett Jackson, but in all honesty, as much as I love those shows, it's still a kid's show. In a Heartbeat was different. It was a show really directed towards teens and it had interesting and realistic characters and stories. I remember one episode was about huffing and another episode where they called cheerleaders "skanks". It was unlike any other Disney show.

And as a kid, I loved the show. It has story lines for the younger girl too, to keep a younger generation interested, and a lot of EMT action to keep the older viewers interested as well. And above all, it was education. It taught me how to react to a lot of situations, whether it's a dangerous-life changing experience or something dealing with friends of mine. It was such a great show and Disney shows this satisfying only come every once in a while.

Much better than an average film!
5 July 2006
Sure, this movie isn't the best needle in the hay stack but it packs up quite a sting for something that people would bring down so quickly. What gets me is how people are so quick to bring this film down but the sequel to Big Momma's House isn't getting half the bad rating as this is.

1st off, let me state, this is a kid's movie so if you're stuck on watching films that are PG-13 and up with adult humor and comedy, then don't watch this. Obviously, a lot of people that are giving this movie a low rating forgot to read that little footnote and acts as if they were expecting a hard hitting drama. Titanic II has been in talks for 7 years, just wait up for another 25 and it'll come. Be patient! Seriously though, one of my favorite aspects of this film is that it's a black film that doesn't rely on smoking, drinking, drugs, murders, jail, and anything else that makes black films so stereotyped. There are only so many black films that you can actually see being done by respected white actors in the industry. This is one of them.

The children aren't the best actors in the world but I'm glad to see that Ice Cube can act like a civilized adult in his films instead of playing the street thug or the black, heroic, (sadly) chaotic superhero. Ice Cube did a great job portraying Nick and Nia Long did a great job herself.

This movie doesn't come with the funniest jokes or humorous situations but the basic premise of the show is 2 kids ruining a guy's like for a drive that's going to take a while. It managed to keep me interested throughout the entire movie and didn't leave me with a bad taste in my mouth.

The writers obviously forgot we don't live in the 80's
5 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I watched and LOVED the 1st film but the sequel was no good at all. This is one of the movies that shouldn't have had a sequel to it at all and would've been better just left alone. Big Momma's House ran on a few good ideas but I would've just preferred if it was a whole new movie franchise instead of making it into a sequel of one of my favorite films. Now, here's where the film failed at being any good.

My biggest issue with this movie was that I noticed how it tried to run away with a PG rating while still making it adult-themed with Malcolm's interest in a female's body and his occasional drug and sex references. Apparently, it didn't work out because not only did the movie do bad as a PG movie but it didn't even make the PG rating. Movies always seem to fail when they can't just make it similar to it's 1st movie (like Scary Movie 3, whomever thought that was funny is obviously 13 years old or younger). I don't know why people would argue that movies aren't funny with the cursing and sex jokes and references. That is exactly what makes the movie funnier. Would you have laughed more is the woman in the Bingo game had called Big Momma a "Ho!" instead of a "Heffer!"? Think about it.

My 2nd problem I had with the film was the weak character development. This story runs along the lines of those like "The Pacifier" and "Bringin' Down Da House", mixing up the most unexpected person with the complete opposite of family. In the end, the family actually likes the person and the person ends up saving the family or their family members, yadda yadda yadda. Not that I don't like these kind of stories, (I LOVE them) but this one was weakly done. What made it even worst is that when the movie was over, they made it seem like the bond was SO special. They didn't even go that far in "Bringin' Down Da House" and the relationship between Queen Latifah's character and the kids actually had development, something this family didn't. I mean, please, it even did the infamous, "I can't go yet. I still have ONE more thing left to do." line.

My 3rd problem was the fact that my favorite characters from the 1st film were used weakly or not at all. Jascha Washington's character Trent was just a waste of a paycheck that could've been used to make this movie a little funnier. Don't get me wrong, Trent was one of my favorite characters and I couldn't picture the franchise without him but if you're going to put him in the movie at all, make his character a bit more useful besides the obvious, "My (step)father embarrasses me!" crap. He was only in 2 scenes and I was REALLY hoping his character was going to be useful eventually. He wasn't.

Nia Long's character, Sherry, was useless too. Nia Long is a very good actress and her character was completely underdeveloped throughout the film. Although, some may argue that being in 3 scenes and being underdeveloped is two completely different things.

Finally, there were characters in the 1st one that made the movie what it was and they weren't even mentioned in this film. Character's like John(the white partner, he wasn't the one killed in the movie), Tichina Arnold's character Ritha(the one who gave birth during the 1st one) and Anthony Anderson's character, Nolan, (the over-sized mall cop who took his job WAY too seriously).

Ultimately, this movie came packed with cheap shot laughs that only someone under the age of 14 would laugh at. Falling out of chairs, catching maniac babies, and watching over-sized woman flaunt as if they're in the cover of vogue went out of style about 5 or 6 years ago. Come on, when was the last time someone laughed at these corny jokes?

When a Killer Calls (2006 Video)
5/10
Just barely made an average flick!
19 June 2006
A lot of people find this movie to be something amazing, but I can't help but feel that the people voting for this film are people upset by the fact "When a Stranger Calls" didn't live up to their horror expectations.

The producer must've got the entire cast and crew to come here and make "kick-ass movie!" comments because, unfortunately, no one with human taste would find this movie to be as good as they claim it to be.

Watching this movie, I just can't help but feel this is done by a 17 year old dude who just learned a couple of new camera effects. The "special effects" in this film come up as high as weak lighting, twitchy cameras, and rain storms that doesn't even seem to cover an entire patio. Seriously, did these people use lamps and hose pipes for these effects? The deaths come up very short to today's standard creative deaths. Nothing but stabbings and slitting throats. And when I say nothing but, I mean it literally. It's 2006, at least someone could've burned! These stabbings (which looks VERY fake, by the way) just don't do for anyone anymore, it's not 1980 anymore.

The characters are all predictable, and unlike it's alternate, "When a Stranger Calls" (which I think this title is only a lure for the emo-kiddies who were upset with the lack of gore from it's alternate), you have no reason to care for these characters. The protagonist, Trisha, comes up nothing bigger than the average blue-eyed teenage blondie with a hottie boyfriend, slutty attitude, and mistaken rep from the adults. She is the character we used to love to see get killed back in the early "Halloween" series. You know, back when characters were stereotyped. The only thing this movie is missing is the shower scene that literally turns into a blood bath.

I do like the idea that this movie gives no mercy to the children. You rarely get to see children die, and if they do die, then you never get to see them actually get killed. It was actually disturbing but never done before. I doubt it'll start a new wave for the horror genre, but it's a good moment to look back on.

The acting was... it was... unnoticeable. It's hard to throw a compliment or a complaint because I doubt you'll be paying attention. Not because the film itself is so engaging but because no one really cares about no name cast. I could easily talk about how the protagnist's, scared reactions and frightening faces come up super short but that would be like trying to prove to someone that a pickle is green.

Overall, the only reason I might've given it this high of a number is because I was air-drunken enough to watch the fake ass looking slashes.

A Great Comedic Insight on Black Relationships
12 November 2005
Despite it's mislead title(The Definite Reason Why Men Are Dogs), this film captures the life of black faithful men and showing that all men aren't perfect but women are just as much as dogs as the rest of us. It shows insight of how woman will try to change you, deceive you, and seduce you. For once in the world of entertainment, men weren't shown up to be the villains in a black relationship. Which makes it hard to believe this was written by a black woman. I also liked the concept of seeing small interview clips on black men and troubles they had in love affairs.

I'll be honest, it isn't absolutely funny but it still is a comedy and it had me laughing every now and again. If you are watching this for a strong comedy then you might not like it all that much so don't expect too much when watching this.

Fast and the Furious with sass
18 September 2005
And it's not a bad thing either. The comedy in here beats our Fast and the Furious by the 1st intentional joke. Seriously, how can a movie featuring Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah with a clumsy, think-too-hard cop and a hard driving taxicab not be funny. It's damn near to the point of being brilliant.

The action in this film is pretty damn good as well. Some people may argue that it isn't up to Fast and the Furious stats but I beg to differ. Fast and the Furious was a pretty good movie but the stunts weren't all that great and original. When watching this film I felt as if I was on the edge of my seat every time another car stunt was coming up. Especially during the last car scene including that rat trap. Plus that car transformation looked really good as well.

Admittingly, the acting was pretty mediocre. It wasn't bad or anything but it didn't really make me say "Damn, they know how to act!" But really, how often does a viewer say that during a comedy, the biggest thing we look for is the jokes, something this movie definitely delivers.

Worth a watch!

It's Worth Watching If You Have A Dirty Sense Of Humor
17 September 2005
The only reason I gave this film a 7 out of 10 is because a flat 6 seems too low but it does feel a bit below a 7 as well. Let me explain myself first.

This movie started off very hilarious. This kid who always gets picked on finds himself trying to help women cross the streets and wound up escorting this whore to her club. I think the concept of a snot nose kid and his pet rat who's white but comes off as a ghetto raised thug and making these funny one-liners all the time was hilarious and makes the movie all worth watching.

The voices were very good and done by a very nice cast. The voices fit the personalities quite well and makes the jokes even funnier, if Junior sounded like a regular kid do you think you would've found his jokes funny or feel an innocent vibe with him? Nope! Bernie Mac and Ludicrous were my favorite appearances though, even though the others were really good.

The animation was admitting crappy but so what? You can't always judge a good film on its looks. I think it's about time someone stood up to the harsh media world and say "Hey, I can make a crappy looking film and make it hilarious!" Seriously, why would people even comment on how bad the movie is but only mention the animation. All that does is make you look stupid and push all your opinions aside for anyone who has enough common sense to know that comments like that aren't needed.

The downfall was where the comedy started to fall flat. Many may think that Weathers was the only comedy in the movie but I beg to differ. At 1st he was hilarious and had me asking for more, until I realized he is really pretty aggravating and makes his one-liner comments in every other 3 to 5 sentences. The more Weather's mouth opened, the more his jokes actually seemed to fall. By the end of the movie not only did I stop laughing at his jokes but I started getting upset by them.

Besides Weathers actually irritating me, the storyline should've ran on a gag instead of running on a story. Seriously, like I stated in this comment before, the regular concept of a shrimpy white boy experiencing the life of a pimp was funny enough but when I started to realize that there was a real storyline going on then I started to get disappointed because the jokes started failing to make me laugh, the characters were being pretty off, and the story itself was pretty stupid and fell away from what the film started off as.

With all said and done I still think this movie is worth the watch and should definitely be rented if not bought.

Representing black families the way they should!
17 September 2005
Seriously, I read all the user comments for this show and I have to say, the only people who think this show is anything below average or average overall, then they must be blind and deaf.

The real beauty of this show is how well they capture the lives of black people. It isn't scared to cross that extra mile, especially when it comes to stories revolving around sex. This is a black drama that people can look without always depending on a black issue. There are stories that everyone can relate to and not just those raised in a bad neighborhood. This show deals with racial issues, sexist issues, dealing with deaths, marriage issues, affairs, and the biggest issue they ever dealt with, lesbian relationship.

The males in this story are black males who actually have their head on their shoulders and run pretty decent businesses without making a living off selling drugs and spend their time smoking weed and drinking while ignoring their desperate child who stands around the father begging for attention.

The children in this movie aren't ghetto fabulous and all out cursing their parents out then run away to their girlfriend's house to sleep with her. The children actually act like children who are growing up under the pressures that all kids go though of all skin.

With the story's revolving around the characters, nothing never feels out of line. Everything seems nicely done and just leaves us asking for more. My biggest beef is that BET is labeling the series under M but cutting up anything that'll give the episodes a PG rating. I wish Showtime would start airing the episodes again or they'll find another channel that doesn't harm the episodes.
