Last Looks (2021)
Slightly surreal or absurdist but fun and entertaining.
There were a lot of things that attracted me to this, namely the trailer with Mel Gibson doing a southern accent and then jumping into British after his character's scene cuts. I had to see it.
The other obvious star is Charlie Hunnam's BEARD. This is a great Viking beard that every man wishes they had. You know you're young when you can grow a blonde beard.
Anyhoo, I had low expectations, considering i like about 1 of every 20 new movies. But I love detective stories and mysteries. This reminded me of a cross between a Columbo episode (the one with William Shatner) and a bit of a Knives Out vibe - Combine that with a little Scooby-Doo or some other cartoon element and maybe a bit of a late 80's Lifetime Movies episode.
It's a bizarre concoction and the story is outlandishly absurd.
But g-damn it was pretty fun an entertaining.
The cinematography and direction felt a bit TV-like, but it held my attention, and it was a lot of fun! I'm giving it an 8 because I think it deserves a little more love than the ratings show.
After it was over, I said "Well, I've never seen anything quite like that."
And that's saying something. It's not a work of art per-se but I was entertained. - Thumbs Up!
Il racconto dei racconti - Tale of Tales (2015)
This was a dire mess
Absolutely no story to grab on to in the first 30 mins..
Is this supposed to be a comedy? WTF is it? Perhaps there could have been something worthwhile here but the story writer, the screenwriter and the editor were asleep on the job... as were the audience.
Passion Play (2010)
An Oddity.
I clicked on this one night seeing "Megan Fox" in the listing - knowing nothing about it.
First of all, this movie is TOTALLY UNREALISTIC. Not because Megan Fox has wings.. but because Mickey Rourke and Bill Murray are anything but invisible to a hot 20 something Megan Fox. I don't know if the producers are insane but in real life a chick like that would not even see, let alone have a conversation with one of those old geezers. It's just a fact. So really, that is why it is categorized in the Fantasy genre. Aside from that giant elephant in the room, it was relatively vibey and odd.. enter Bill and Brian-Doyle Murphy and the nutty factor goes to 10.
Normally I'd rate a movie like this in the 3-4 area but there was so much weirdness and great cameos and a nice sprinkling of strippers, drugs and debauchery that i upped the rating a few ticks...
oh, and Megan Fox never looked hotter.
Blow the Man Down (2019)
Try Hardy, Cheeky Bore (in a Beautiful Setting)
Stylistically, this is my kinda movie. A remote New England town, murder mystery, female protagonist... The trailer with Margo Martindale telling the girls to "drink" raised a smile with me however I did get the sense that this "Dark Comedy" had a real Netflix vibe - judging from the trailer.
Anyhow, I watched it tonight. And it was worse than I expected. Honestly, you'd get a deeper plot and more intriguing characters watching Forensic Files. I think it took about an hour before I said, "Ok, something's happening now".
This feels a lot like a student film your friend made that you want to like and are tortured for 1 & 1/2 hours sitting through. It's hampered by a lackluster story-line, a horrible screenplay and unattractive people. What antagonizes this is the desperate attempt at fixing the nowhere-ness at it's core with beautiful scenery, cinematography, a great soundtrack reminiscent of a good British Mystery and some momentary try-hardy Cohen Bros -esque stylings which normally I crave, but here it feels phony, and almost like an insult as opposed to homage.
There was a point half way through where i said, "they need to bring in those singing Fishermen again to fix that last scene" and lo and behold - cue the the singing fishermen! lol the director knew it was dying too.
The singing Fisherman are a perfect example of why it was irritating.
Antagonistic, because while singing Fishermen are creepy and vibey.. they are not enough to distract us from the movie we are watching. Frankly this movie isn't good enough to deserve singing Fishermen.
I've seen The Wickerman, and you sir, are no Wickerman.
I think someone had the right idea, the right elements, the right setting, a great dp / cinematographer, art direction (great wallpaper!), great soundtrack, although again, this movie isn't clever enough to warrant that "British Mystery Soundtrack".
The ball was dropped with the screenplay, direction and casting. Margo Martindale is a definite standout along with Will Brittain. Otherwise the cast was ho-hum. In general there may not have been enough story to grab onto in the first place to get this on par with the sources it is derivative of , but it was packaged nicely..
About this Netflix-y vibe..I'm not a fan of the current trend, nor find humourous having old people say trendy 'hip' things.. it's so cheeky. I get the sense that the screenwriter is young. It puts this into a cheap category as opposed to a classic.
You can do a darkly humorous suspenseful mystery without the sit-com flavored dialogue. - see Knives Out.
Yogi Bear (2010)
Why must studios ruin every single thing?
What was great about the the old cartoons was that they were funny and fun.
This was not fun or funny. It was lame. It was pathetic, Possibly entertaining to a 1 yr old, but so are mobiles. Industry, stop remaking things for the sake of doing it.
The Last Page (1952)
Diana Dors.. Mesmerizing
This was my first introduction to Diana Dors. A simple but charming crime noir by Hammer. Starts out a tad slow but as soon as Diana enters the scene.. I was mesmerized. Really hope there will be a Blu-ray remaster of this as I'd cosider this this 'Peak' Diana Dors. More substantive films came later like Blonde Sinner (1956) and Tread Softly Stranger (1958) wow! but there's an innocence about her in this film that is unrivaled. A true classic!
