The Long Hot Summer (1985)
Where's the Heat?
A lot of these reviews mention what is right about it and they are correct. Don Johnson and Jason Robards, though different from Paul Newman and Burl Ives, are very good in it.
My 'mediocre' rating all stems from the casting of Judith Ivey and the total lack of 'chemistry' between her character and Johnson's. It's a story that's not supposed to be only about weather heat but sexual heat yet Ivey doesn't come off as repressed. She seems more like a PTA President.
Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971)
Meandering but Still
The gratuitous sex scenes were removed for the U. K. version and I doubt anyone will miss them (unless you are into gratuitous sex scenes). The whole plot of the movie kind of goes in different directions. Still, Van Peebles manages to hold your attention throughout. I mostly find it interesting because it shows the fierce and intense drive of Van Peebles himself to 'get on the map' in moviemaking. That was one determined mama-lover.
The Slime People (1963)
Take This One With a Grain of Salt
It is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Not even weird enough to have some unintentional humor in it. All the actors look as if they wished they wee somewhere else (and not as characters afraid of the monsters). If you can't help yourself and must look at it, have your finger hover over the fast forward button to reach the exciting conclusion.
