The Young Pope (2016)
He is a saint
"Prayer shouldn´t be a list of request. It should be an occasion for understanding. When we pray, we reflect in the most elevated way ever." He is really a saint. The show is light, funny, but most of all, inspiring. The lines are very beautiful. Highly recommend!
Seven Years in Tibet (1997)
Loved it, peaceful and moving, but cruel for mainland Chinese viewers
You can´t watch this film in mainland China. I knew it and watched it when my international friends can´t stop telling me about Tibet independence and how the communist party "intruded" Tibet. I´ve never heard of such comments when I was in China. Tibet is a province of China, full stop. I´ve never doubted it untill I moved abroad.
I don´t think the latter part of the movie is demonising the communist party. Even I know that our party don´t appreciate things that are either too spiritual or too aethestical. They like pragmatic things. Although, it pains me to see how they destroyed the temples, the paitings and their time-honored religious traditions. It pains me to know that Dalai had to scape to India, like what was said in the movie.
Ok, sentimental comments about Chinese history apart, the movie presents a very smooth story line and character transition, from a egoist loner to a wise man, still alone. The whole movie is very peaceful and aethetically enjoying.
Je ne suis pas un homme facile (2018)
An interesting idea to have men reflect but I´m a bit confused in the end
Spoiler
To be honest, I expected more in this movie. I know there´s a lack of sex equality in modern society, but the reality is no as bad as what is shown in the movie. It exaggerates the differences.
The details are funny when it comes to how to attract the "dominant" sex through appearances. The change of attair of men, the shaving, ect,. But the perspective could have been deeper.
About the relationship between Alexandra, her marriage came from no where, her dubbing their conversations has no clear impact. The ending for me is quite confusing. What the hidden marriage can do at the very last 5 min but adding some anti-climax into the movie? The taping coversations revealing should have come much earlier. Those conflicts all thrush in the very last minute, overwhelming, but are left with no conclusions.
What Damien will do when he knows, apart from hiding a marriage from him, that their conversations have been taped. If she is a famous writer, how could her newly release didn´t come to Damien? It could be much more interesting if all the passionate love and sex scenes chould be given to solve this conflict. When Danmien realised he´s been taped.
Again, what is the purpose of the hidden marriage? The more I think about it, the more confusing I get. So, I´m just gonna to bring down my original 7 to a 6.
The perspective is innovative, but I don´t think it´s thought provoking enough. A lot of loose ends. At least, they are not that obvious to me.
Bird Box (2018)
You can watch it to entertain yourself
I missed the first 20 min and thought I missed the "why" part. Sadly, it seems that it is never explained. I can't comment the plot without saying it is not making any logical sense. So, please enjoy yourself, just as I did, without digging into why this is happening.
La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (1998)
A good movie moves you to tears without any rationals
I've heard this movie for a long time, but just watched it recently. An old movie, with all the classics, slow pace and deep perception about life, or something even bigger.
The movie begins with a good story. What bothers me a bit is what the Italian farmer said about the voice of the sea. For me, it is a bit pretentious. And later, his daughter mentioned again about chasing the voice of the sea. The scream. What is said is a secret. For me, this is too much! But I loved the music inspired by this girl.
What really enthralled me in meaning is his argument about finite and infinite. He can only create infinite music through finite piano keys. This philosophical part I can always relate with.
But the music that I enjoyed the most is one that played by the Jazz king, the second one, and the one inspired by that girl.
What moved me is the end, when he said to him I'm sorry my friend, but I'm not leaving the ship. I started to cry even for the longitude (I watched the Italian version, 160 + m) So I jumped several details. But I was still moved to tears. I think it's the perfect act of Tim Roth. His eyes, his innocence was perfected illustrated through his empty gaze.
I could not stop crying hearing he joking about his conversation in heaven. How can I play piano with two right arms?
The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015)
Must see! more about his brilliance
Having watched the movie, instead of amazed by R's brilliance, I was more saddened by his family tragedy. I think this movie, other than focusing on one of the most intelligent mind in human history, has more touch on moral issues, like family, war, racial conflicts, humanity, religion, and love. Of course, R's discovery has brightened the whole world, but not his family. Not his wife or his mother. Especially his wife.
He sacrificed his family for his discovery. So I'd say, it's the gain of the humanity but the loss of his family. What I really love about this movie is that it recovers R as a human, not an almighty genius.
Heidi (2015)
Beautifully cast, innocent and moved me to tears
It's the first time for me to write a review. But I'm very much moved by this movie.
I haven't read the original book, and I read the previous review saying this is supposed to be a movie for children and she doesn't see her son/daughter laugh. I think this is too harsh for the movie.
The scenes are cast as beautiful as it can be, reflecting the pure innocence of the kids for sure. The pure affection among kids are well cast through their innocent smiles. What touched me the most was the nostalgia that Heidi had towards her mountains, and the soft bread that she saved for Peter's grandmother. I hated peter for a while, but the moment he helped Clara stand up. I can see the cute part of a child when he pushed down Clara's wheelchair.
If I have to pick some imperfections in this movie, it would be the quite abrupt ending. Suddenly, Clara can move perfectly, and Heiti got a blank notebook to fill her stories. This setting is diluting the innocence in the movie. Another part, is the relationship between Heiti and her grandfather was only emphasized in the very beginning and left unattended since Clara appears.
