City Slickers (1991)
It actually was not bad
I saw this after seeing Fathers Day a week or so earlier maybe two even because I was waiting for the library to put on the hold shelf; I had requested it right after Father's Day because I really liked that film. A Billy Crystal fan from the Throw Mama from The Train days I was pleasantly surprised with that one, especially since the lower rating. This film however I assume the opposite had happened as in I now had higher hopes
because of Fathers Day and also the higher IMDB rating ergo I was a little disappointed. Yet still a pretty good film with some memorable scenes.
The main thing I didn't care for was the seriousness of it. This is City Slickers after all... staring Billy Crystal! Why continually harp on the mid-life crisis angle throughout the film? We got it already when he decided to go on the trip. A few more laughs would've been nice.
All that aside I liked it including Jack Palance who I didn't think would really work for some reason but I was wrong. I would recommend if you need something to watch but if you haven't seen Fathers Day or Throw Mama, Id recommend those over this one.
The Last House on the Left (1972)
Relatively generally not that... bad??
Im basing this on my viewing possibly 20 years ago wherein my friend recommended or rather suggested it because of the extreme gore or what have you.
Supposedly one of the most disturbing and/or goriest films (if thats a word or if not) there was. At least that we knew of.
At the time I suppose I would agree that it was. Now some 20 years later I wouldn't.
No those people like my friend and I in my opinion haven't seen a lot of the foreign films that were at least as so gory.
The film was memorable for some scenes but I don't think Id want to watch it again.
Im busy watching another film at the moment sorry!
Antropophagus (1980)
Not as Good as Absurd
Are you like me? Not really bothered by the blood the gore nor the blood or entrails of this style film? I mean its all fake anyway right? I appreciate the gore so called and await the showing of such scenes as does any fan however I don't understand why I guess other people are so disgusted by it.
Case in point; the film was banned in the UK, along with several other tame titles such as (off the top of my head) Inferno and some other similars, as "Video Nasty".
Maybe I'm jaded to a relative extremity or maybe perhaps even a potential killer myself (though I doubt either) but I fail to see why they were ever treated as such.
They are fun more than grotesque or horrifying!
Fine they're somewhat grotesque. This is a relatively good entry. I read somewhere, maybe here that Eastman said it was made just for financial reasons. If so maybe more should be made for just that since I found this one still better than most American horror films that never were so humble . Would I rather watch this then Halloween ? Yes but maybe not part II.
But anyway I have other stuff to do now; busy watching other films!
L'occhio nel labirinto (1972)
Excellent Julie!
Excellent Julie! Excellent Julie!!!
That's what i hear them saying (if they weren't busy being stabbed and weren't um...)
Im not sure where I was going with this..but on to the review
Thefilm was rather interesting in a lot of ways. Firstly i suppose the hippie commune; an unordinary locale for the genre in my opinion but i've only seen a handful of this so called style which i guess is a giallo type of film. And in a way others have had similar scenarios but at least not on the italian coast.
Second the actors, the lady i foget her name but shes rather good. Austrian i believe; (i can't open the details while writing this) supposed next Garbo if memory serves. I like her. She was in Suspiria and basically every odd Gialli Ive seen.
Julie is a notch above decent If not very good . The guy from the Bond film I really enjoyed as well. I had apprehensions he would be a stiff for some reason as if he may have felr beneath these type of roles. Or rather the roll beneath he. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed. Reminds me of Leslie Nielson in a way. Nbc If Leslie was a fat Italian that is. Fine "portly'..
Thirdly the soundtrack (I could go with other things but Ill stop here). It created a bizzarre surreal atmosphere much like the Herscel Lewis film Wizard of Gore which I think works both here and there in some weird way.
Fourthly the somewhat original twist ending, the nuancitys of which recall a horrible recurring nightmare I have. I won't go into specifics for there could be people whom haven't seen this yet but Ill say it did rather come close to home with me.
Buio Omega (1979)
A really fine movie
I saw this film maybe a month ago now and after seeing other films in the similar so called sleaze/gore genre I fondly reminisce to that particular evening. (In fact I was just reading reviews of The New York Ripper and seeing that was only rated a 6.2 or so wondered again what this film could have To my chagrin, it was even lower since I would have guessed at least 7.
A seven is at least what I would rate Beyond the Darkness, I gave it 9 because in my opinion it is a real film with a point simple as it may be. For that along with quality cinematography/soundtrack a film should be at least a five or six.)
The acting was above average.
The violence/gore wasn't very bad, maybe there was one scene troubling but really I enjoy all of that and why else would I be watching this type of
movie. There was a realism to it as well as in I could see someone being compelled to do something like what was seen here which added to its disturbing quality.
Conquest (1983)
Pretty good except...
It was an above average sci fi fantasy tale with ape men and the like. To go into the specifics I won't except that there was a bow that shot
multiple arrows at once, alot of guys with loincloths, and the main bad person was this topless woman where at first I appreciated the toplessness but then after so many scenes with the nudity I began to wonder why exactly would one, especially some powerful queen or whatever she was supposed to be not put on something? Just out of comfort. I mean at least a robe or a cape? What's the difference between a robe and a cape by the way? Like a king wears a robe but it looks more like a cape...
Anyways I otherwise thought it a pretty watchable film especially if you like the director's other films.
I Was a Teenage Zombie (1987)
A Triumph
One of the best movies I've seen in a while. No wonder it is in the Criterion Collection. Yes, of course its stupid, but so what? Does stupid necessarily equal bad? I don't think so at all.. This movie had almost everything I admire about zombie and more generally, horror movies: the camp (poor video/audio quality and dialogue in this regard) action, raunchiness, some gore yes, and laughs. I thought the plot was entirey original and well thought out. The film had many likable characters and includes great performances by the drug dealer and the two main heroes. In fact they were most all endearing. There were one or two particularly gross scenes which I could have done without. Awesome soundtrack also. Highly recommend to any zombie fan. Bravo!
