Judge Mathis (1999)
Ignorant, racist, unprofessional
Judge Mathis is so busy telling his audience his self-pitying life story for the zillionth time, pushing his pro-BLM, hateful, racist, misogynist views ad nauseum, it's a bore-fest. Like Judge Judy, he ridicules and attacks litigants, talking over them, screaming at them, cutting them off and makes it very clear that he rules, based on his own prejudices & not on the facts of the cases before him. Especially upsetting is his joking about & promoting the use of drugs. For anyone who's lost a loved one to the use of drugs, this is unforgivable. Judge Mathis definitely sends mixed messages. He seems too eager to boast about his "street cred," bragging about his early participation in gang/criminal activity and his current empathy & implied approval of this mentality. I think his is a dangerous show.
Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958)
Great Fun!
What's not to love about this delicious movie? Luscious vamp Yvette Vickers, naughty William Hudson, the dancin' fool deputy, (Frank Chase) the space alien who bears a marked resemblance to President Eisenhower and that riotitious mindless "rock music" playing at the local pub. The TV newsman taunting Allison Hayes about "pink elephants" is a hoot. The clothes, sets, special effects are definitely cheesy. I won't give away the predictable ending, but let me just say this movie is the perfect antidote to Covid cabin fever. Whomp up a big batch of popcorn, ease into a comfortable recliner or couch, turn this on and enjoy!
Between Two Worlds (1944)
Uneven
With the exception of hambone John Garfield, boring Paul Henreid & Eleanor Parker, this movie boasts a great cast. The doleful music is monotonous & uninspired. Could have been better.
Sylvia Scarlett (1935)
Repulsive!
George Cukor, Cary Grant & Katharine Hepburn were gay, (or in Cary's case, at least bisexual) "not that there's anything wrong with it," but their "in" romp isn't my cup of tea. Just can't make friends with this pointless movie.
I Married a Woman (1958)
A Guilty Pleasure!
Loved, Loved, LOVED this movie! John Wayne is hilarious. Nita Talbot is a treasure. The improbable pairing of Mr. Gobel and Ms. Dors is genius. Mr. Monjou is fine. Very, very amusing!
The Bad Seed (1956)
What an embarrassment!
Mervyn LeRoy and Nancy Kelly should have been run out of Hollywood after this embarrassing effort. His directing was amateurish, stagey, plodding and predictable. No one has ever chewed up the scenery like Nancy Kelly. She actually got an Oscar nomination for her histrionics in this very flawed film? From the unconvincing performances to the very predictable1950-is ending. Of course, adorable Patty had to die. The ending in the book was more terrifying.
The Star (1952)
Great Stars, Great Acting!
I've read the snarky, snide, dismissive reviews. I am sad that the sages passing judgment on this film and its stars, cannot see Bette Davis' and Sterling Hayden's charisma, star quality. They rise above what one reviewer sniffed as "a threadbare Sunset Boulevard." I find Bette Davis always fascinating, engrossing.
Angel on My Shoulder (1946)
Great Actors!
Who doesn't love Claude Rains & Paul Muni? The actor who plays "Smiley" is fun. The movie itself, like some from that era, is fuzzy, out of focus, poorly shot. Okay, this isn't Citizen Kane, but its enjoyable.
