Just because there's "nothing new under the sun" doesn't mean you can't still enjoy its warmth and glow, as well as its shadows and subtleties. "Heroes" -- our "sun" -- has plenty of each, along with charm, intrigue, excellent character development, and great story lines (not to mention wonderful dialogue). Is it, as one suggested, a "rip-off of X-Men"? Not any more so than X-Men was a "rip-off" of other super hero comics, shows and movies that preceded it. The fact is, there just aren't that many "truly original" TV shows out there any more, but the eclectic super group of "Heroes" comes pretty close.
One of the things that I enjoy about this show is the "down-to-earth" quality it possesses. It's practical and matter-of-fact, without being "over-the-top" or "ordinary"; plus it's as "realistic" as any show about "super" people can be. This realism, I think, is due mainly because the characters -- all of them, including Claire's brooding dad and even the mysterious Sylar -- are all so well-developed. Even Niki Sanders' son, Micah (so very well-played by Noah Gray-Cabey), is a pure joy to watch (in spite of brief screen time). We know them and like them, and we fear for them and root for them even though we may feel a bit "uncomfortable" doing so for the "darkly heroic side" of one of our heroes.
My favorite characters ? Hiro, the comically joyful and determined Japanese, and Claire, our ever-resilient cheerleader. It's also good to see Adrian Pasdar, Greg Grunberg, and Clea DuVall in TV dramas again. I'm hoping NBC has the integrity, fortitude (and the respect for its viewers) it needs so that it can "realize" a true conclusion for this wonderful TV show -- before it abruptly and unceremoniously "sinks it" like they recently did to the also-wonderful "Surface." This TV goody is a clear ten-out-of-ten! "Save the cheerleader, save the world!" Now, that's not too hard, is it?
