Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: What We're Fighting For (2020)
over at last
After 7 seasons, i,m completely burned out on this show, i should be sad, but i,m just glad its finally over. this show has jumped the shark way too many times, with main characters dying, only to be brought back again and again through some stupid deus ex machina plot line. on the plus side, at least they got a decent send off rather than just leaving them hanging like a lot of shows do. shame Ely didn,t survive though, he was the most interesting and likeable new character introduced into the show
The Vampire Bat (1933)
no vampires whatsoever
In a movie called The Vampire Bat, i would expect to see some vampires, but what we get instead is Lionel Atwill's mad doctor draining people of their blood so he can feed it to a brain that he keeps in a tank, its never explained why. at only 62 mins, we could have done with less talky scenes and less of the comedy relief in the form of the hypochondriac old lady
Time Trap (2017)
good movie, with annoying characters and unlikely conclusion
Almost everything about this movie was great, except for 2 things, the characters and the ending. dear god, the characters in this were so annoying, typical teenagers if you will. as for the ending, you expect me to believe that humanity, after thousands of years, abandoned earth but still returns to that cave just to look for some random teenagers that disappeared?
Stargirl (2020)
starts out good before devolving into teen drama
The first three episodes were good, as was the finale, but overall, there was too much family/teen drama for me. its not woke like most of the CW shows, but its early days and since season 2 is apparently only airing on the CW, that's not a good sign. the new Justice Society is awful and other than Stargirl herself, just look like bad cos players, especially the new Doctor Midnite who is useless. she adds nothing to the show and does nothing other than talk to her glasses, which she names Chuck, which is really cringe. the finale gave some interesting teases for season 2, but considering the CW's track record, i,m not hopeful
Batwoman: Pilot (2019)
mediocre beginning
Not as woke or cringe as i expected it to be, but it was still boring and mediocre. Ruby Rose seems to have learned acting at the Brie Larson school of acting where they teach you to use one expression for every emotion. the actress playing Alice was laughably over the top, and not in a good way.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Captain Feminist
The Good
Goose The Cat steals the show
Ben Mendelson as Talos the Skrull is a decent enough villain
Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury is great as usual
The Bad
Brie Larson is terribly miscast and seems to possess only one emotion, bored and disinterested
when she tries to be funny, it just comes across as forced and falls flat every time
Captain Marvel is too OP, and as a result, its difficult for people to relate to her
Nick Fury gets the idea for the Avengers from the name on the side of Carols fighter jet
a cat is responsible for Nick Fury losing his eye, A CAT
Shield acquires the Tessaract when the cat coughs it up on Furys desk, totally retconning the events of Captain America The First Avenger
men are portrayed as either bad or incompetent throughout the movie
during one of the fight scenes, a song is played that is supposed to be some kind of female empowerment, but is just cringe worthy
Aquaman (2018)
DC finally gets it right
The best DC movie so far, although, thats not saying much considering their output so far has been mediocre. having said that, Jason Mamoa was born to play Aquaman, and has more charisma in his finger than Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) has in his entire body.
a good balance of story and action, and the underwater scenes are nothing short of spectacular. the visual effects guys who walked on this movie should be commended for the stellar work they did. Black Manta was an awesome villain and his suit was faithful to the comics.
if i had one minor gripe, it would be the romance between Arthur and Mera. i have never been a fan of romance in my comic book movies as i feel it takes you out of the flow, and that kissing scene, while explosions go off in the distance was cringe inducing.
so, a success for DC, so lets hope they can keep the ball rolling with Shazam shall we?
Twins of Evil (1971)
a fun but confusing conclusion to the Karnstein trilogy
At one point in the movie, Mircalla rises from her tomb after blood drips on her shroud. she then bites Count Karnstein and turns him into a vampire, after which she promptly disappears from the movie and is never mentioned again. even more confusing is the fact that people die from vampire bite long before anyone becomes a vampire and yet we never discover the identity of the culprit. Hammer also seems to have forgotton that vampires can,t go out during the day yet they do frequently here. oh well, the Collinson twins are nice to look at, although thankfully they keep the overt sexuality to a minimum this time
Doctor Who: The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos (2018)
Chibbnall calls this a season finale?
The worst season finale in the entire history of New Who. a finale is supposed to be epic and grand in scale with a huge threat for the Doctor to face, what do we get? the return of the tooth monster from episode 1, who wasn,t all that interesting to begin with. even worse, he is supposed to be this deadly killer responsible for the deaths of thousands, but Graham takes him down easily after shooting him in the leg lol.
very boring episode for a season finale, and i actually find it amusing that the 2 best actors in the entire episode are the 2 white guys who were not hired to tick boxes as part of the BBCs diversity policy
Doctor Who: Demons of the Punjab (2018)
interesting aliens, but not much else
The aliens and their back story were very interesting, and i did find the ending a bit emotional. otherwise though, i found this episode rather slow and boring and the supporting characters were uninteresting
Doctor Who: The Tsuranga Conundrum (2018)
in the future, men can get pregnant, apparently
Oh my god, where do i even start with this episode? it gets off to a bad start when the Doctor and her companions survive a sonic mine, despite the fact they are standing next to it when it activates. from there, it only gets worse.
a monster that is more cute and cuddly than fierce and dangerous, and which is obviously aimed at an audience with an average age of 9, a sub plot involving male pregnancy that is so bad, its cringe inducing, it was no surprise that this was written by Chris Chibnal.
the companions, other than Brian, continue to be useless, and the storylines just continue to be bad. its not completely Jodies fault, but she is just not a good actress, so she can take some of the blame.
Doctor Who: Arachnids in the UK (2018)
ok for what it was
Enjoyed the episode for what it was, but i can do without the anti Trump message this episode was trying to push. regardless of how you feel about the man, please keep your political opinions out of my sci-fi BBC
The Dead 2: India (2013)
the dead 2: India
an American engineer working in India must fight his way through 300 miles of terrain that's infested with the walking dead, in order to rescue his pregnant Indian girlfriend. joining him for the journey is an orphaned Indian boy.
if you saw the first movie, then you pretty much know what to expect, a zombie road movie, but instead of a soldier accompanying the main lead, its a boy this time, with a little bit of love story thrown in.
i actually enjoyed this more than the original, which was slow in parts, whereas this was quite fast paced with many zombie encounters and more than enough blood to satisfy the gorehounds out there.
The Dead (2010)
the dead
i had known about this movie for many months, but never taken the plunge and watched it until now, and i can honestly say i,m glad i did. the story may not move at a fast pace, but it's interesting enough to hold the attention
it has a lot in common with Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, especially in regards to how slow the zombies move. no cgi was used for the zombies, but the gore effects were still pretty good
it may not be nonstop action from start to finish, but the zombies are always a present threat, with our 2 main protagonists always having to keep moving in order to stay ahead of them
its also nice to see a zombie movie set somewhere other than America or Britain for a change, namely in Ghana and Burkina Faso
as for the story, an American military engineer attempts to escape the dead by finding a working plane after his original flight crashed, leaving him stranded. he joins forces with an African soldier who deserted his post in order to look for his son, and together they make their way through the countryside, dodging the dead as they go.
if you like your zombie movies fast paced, then you probably won't enjoy this as it can be slow at times, but the story alone is enough to keep you watching
State of Emergency (2011)
state of emergency
an explosion at a chemical factory causes a toxic cloud that infects the inhabitants of a small town, and turns them homicidal with a taste for human flesh. anyone that turns out to be immune now has to survive until the military sweeps in and takes care of the problem.
bear in mind, we are not talking full scale zombie apocalypse here, the incident only affects one small town, but it does make a nice change from the usual zombie fare
admittedly there is very little zombie action, with the movie concentrating more on story and characterization, so gorehounds should probably steer clear of this one, otherwise, why not give it a try? it held my attention for the entire 90 mins run time
The Subjects (2015)
the subjects
a group of complete strangers are put in a locked room together to test a new pill being developed by a pharmaceutical company. although they don,t know it at first, the pill is meant to grant powers to the person who takes it
the prospect of a pill that grants powers may seem enticing, but as the characters soon discover, the powers they gain may not be so easy to control, and pretty soon, they start to die gruesome deaths, and are unable to leave the room for 8 hours.
at 80 mins, it's pretty short, but the story moved at a good pace and i was never bored
La horde (2009)
The Horde
a group of crooked cops decide to avenge the murder of one of their own by killing the gangsters responsible. when they go to the gang's hideout however, they are quickly overcome by the men they came to kill. before the cops can be killed, a zombie outbreak in the city reaches the building they are in, and both groups are forced to work together to survive and escape.
The Horde is a french movie with subtitles, which i thought would put me off at first, but i,m glad i stuck with it as i really enjoyed it. the zombies are fast moving and vicious, and the action is fast and furious with the movie moving at a quick pace. gorehounds will be happy too because their is blood, and plenty of it.
it's a shame that the zombie outbreak is never really explained, but that's a minor quibble considering the rest of the movie should satisfy any zombie fan
Rammbock (2010)
Rammbock
part zombie movie and part love story, this tells the tale of Michael, who goes to Berlin to return his ex girlfriends keys, in the hope he can convince her to reconcile.
unfortunately for Michael, his trip coincides with a virus outbreak that turns its victims into bloodthirsty homicidal maniacs. although the infected are of the fast moving 28 Days Later variety, there are a few interesting ideas here that set this apart from the usual zombie flick.
the infected can be held at bay by the flash from a camera due to the fact they are photosensitive, plus, the virus itself can be held off by sedating yourself until the body's own immune system eliminates it altogether.
admittedly the movie is rather short at 63 mins and some of the acting and dialogue is terrible, but these are minor quibbles, and i'm left to wonder what the makers could have done with more time and a better budget to play with.
Age of Dinosaurs (2013)
age of dinosaurs
you know what to expect when you watch a movie made by the Asylum, a low budget b movie in the sci-fi/horror genre with actors you don't know, with the occasional well known actor thrown in to surprise you.
the well known actors this time around are Treat Williams and Ronny Cox, both looking well past their prime at this point in their careers, but i guess work is work when you have to put food on the table.
it borrows heavily from Jurassic Park, with a genetics firm using dinosaur dna to create a flesh regenerating serum. needless to say, the dinosaurs break loose and rampage around the city, with Williams firefighter character trying to save his daughter from the carnage.
the cg is subpar considering today's technology, but Asylum movies always move at a brisk pace with this one being no exception. so, if you want some mindless dinosaur mayhem, you could do worse.
Extinction: The G.M.O. Chronicles (2011)
zombies with parkour skills
not a terrible movie by any means, but it does have its flaws and plot holes. you really expect me to believe that a person can survive for 16 days by just eating toilet paper? highly unlikely, i doubt it has much nutritional value, if any.
the movie starts out well enough, but soon devolves into nonsense with several different types of zombie, and towards the latter half of the movie, the zombies suddenly develop parkour skills and start wearing hoodies!!!
there is also a lot of sexual tension between the main male and female leads that never leads anywhere, leading me to wonder why they bothered including it
Extinction (2014)
Boring
i sat through over an hour of this movie before something finally happened, and even then it wasn't worth it. the dinosaurs were animatronic rather than cg, and were very poor ones too. the found footage style certainly didn't help matters either, with way too much shaky camera shots making it difficult to know what was happening
to sum up, it's basically a bunch of unlikable characters walking through the jungle for days until they get attacked by some very bad looking dinosaurs that wouldn't scare Fred Flintstone. maybe they should have put him in this movie, it may have made it more watchable, but don't take my word for it.
Extinction (2015)
human drama with zombies
at this point, the zombie genre is pretty much played out, so it's never easy trying to come up with a new and interesting take on it, which is where Extinction comes in.
the focus of the story is on the 2 male leads, and the little girl who lives with one of them, and despite the fact the 2 men live next door to each other, they have nothing to do with each other due to a falling out many years ago, a mystery you have to work out for yourself as the movie progresses.
needless to say, you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to work out what causes the friction between them, or what the connection between them and the little girl is.
although the zombies don't make an appearance often, they are suitably scary when they do, and every scene that features them is terrifying
i honestly thought the human drama would bore me, but i actually found it to be the best part of the whole movie. if you like your zombie movies fast paced with plenty of zombie bashing, then this movie will not be for you, but i enjoyed it. give it a try, you may be pleasantly surprised.
Cyborg X (2016)
bad terminator clone
right from the start, you know this is going to be a terminator ripoff, and not a good one either.all the machines facilities resemble disused warehouses, and their so called sophisticated network is stored on computers that make the zx spectrum look high tech
as usual, you have the barechested guy with pecs and abs for the ladies and big breasted women who can't act for the guys, plus Danny Trejo thrown in for good measure, although he gets about 20 lines tops in the entire movie
the cyborgs look just like generic body builders, but with Bane type masks and Borg like weapons on their arms
not a bad movie overall, but not an especially good one either
All Through the House (2015)
Christmas is a time for death and dismemberment
the makers of this movie obviously thought that the best way to pay homage to 80s slasher films, was to throw blood all over the place, and populate the entire movie with nubile young women showing their tits just before getting killed in gruesome ways.
sometimes, less is more, and as any fan of horror movies will tell you, a good horror doesn't need blood to scare you, some perhaps, but not the copious amounts on display here. yes, the deaths were inventive at times, but they served no purpose other than to gross you out for the sake of it
not a terrible movie, but it substituted blood and gore for a decent story, and it won't be winning any major awards anytime soon
The Rezort (2015)
Jurassic Park, but with zombies instead of dinosaurs
in a market overflowing with zombie movies, it can't be easy for movie studios to come up with new and interesting takes on the genre, but with The Rezort they came up trumps
the movie zips along at a decent pace with enough zombie action to satisfy most fans of the genre, and the characters are the kind you actually care about for once, with Dougray Scott being the most recognisable out of all the actors present.
just in case you were wondering how an island could continue to function with only a finite number of zombies to shoot, this issue is actually dealt with as part of the plot, and is a shocking revelation when it comes.
all in all, it's a decent way to spend an hour and a half, and is certainly a lot better than some of the dross out there
