Dune (2021)
Villeneuve's most dissapointing film to date
On the screen you will see beautiful images. Many frames resemble abstract paintings with colossal objects moving in space. The little people in obscure costumes stepping out of even more obscure vehicles are fascinating to watch. Occasionally, the influences of classics like 2001 and Stalker can be seen. The CGI is provided by the best VFX teams and the music of Hans Zimmer is formidable and impact heavy as is often the case. In addition, this film has a star cast. Chamalet plays well and is perhaps the only bit of soul this film has.
Dune is perhaps a story that should not be made into a movie. This film cannot possibly depict the story of Dune. For people who come purely for the film, and havent read the books, there is little to grasp the story, other than a vague class struggle and a plot similar to James Cameron's Avatar. At no point is the viewer motivated to care about the characters (except Chamalet perhaps), the beautiful images are beautiful to look at, but exhausting in the long run, like lingering for too long in a modern art museum. Villeneuve has failed to do for Dune what he has done for Blade Runner. In a weird way, the atmosphere reminded me of his earlier film Incendies, but minus the emotion. After the movie, you feel like you've swallowed the sand from the dunes you've seen on the screen. It is a bone-dry film that leaves you bone-dry.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
Rear window + the girl in the train + shutter island
Starts out as Rear Window, has a Shutter Island plot twist in the middle, ends as a combination of Rear Window and The Girl On The Train. Probably several things went wrong in the production and the script was probably modified several times. Some top actors like Gary Oldman and Anthony Mackie play pretty insignificant roles. The film just feels off and when the final twist arrives you're like "that's it...?". The last 10 minutes of the movie is literally spend on the main character leaving the house and taking a taxi. I understand that this is important because the character finally dares to go outside, but you as a viewer will not be interested by then. Seriously, don't watch this ,watch any of the other three films mentioned.
The Right Stuff (1983)
Very messy plot
It's a very ambitious movie, with great actors and some beautiful scenes, but unfortunately a very uneven plotline.
The Battle of Elderbush Gulch (1913)
First time we see thought in film
This film is revolutionary. It's a character-driven plot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
