Spy (2015)
hilarious
I didn´t have a boring moment and I laughed out loud many times. A favorite comedy for the books.
I have missed really good action comedies, and now with an amazing female lead role!
Melissa McCarthy is perfect for the role and her undercover identities are hilarious.
I love Jude Law and Jason Statham in ridiculous acts, especially Statham is completely goofy and I haven't seen that before.
And I really like that she is completely badass too, as it would be too easy to make the joke on her the whole film.
The fact is I don't like violent movies that much any longer, but the action is very funny.
Beforeigners (2019)
Season two: rating two stars (based on three episodes)
My star rating is for season one, which I loved SO MUCH!
The second season I have watched episode one and two, and the last episode just to get it wrapped up once and for all. It was unengaging, both in terms of the missing!!!humour, and the storyline starting off with Jack the ripper: how boring is that!!!
Here you have the most interesting world in history of television, with lots of things to play off of, and they go with overkill on a murderer washed up and retired for centuries.
Not to mention one of the mIn reason the humour felt cancelled alltogether: they removed the cavemen...!!!
Also, the main drive of the story with the witch and the king just didnt interest me, even with random displays of se*x nudity that had nothing to do with anything, it was just completely misplaced.
Why does that happen to so many second seasons? Is it a curse? Why do they forget that the humour is most important? Well, that said...I felt that they lost the sense of the mystical too.
And the ending, omg....it just destroyed this even more!
Luckily, I saw season one twice, I guess that is the last I will see of this show.
Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (2020)
I didnt even like musicals. But I love this!
The second season is even better than the first one!
I cant believe why this show doesnt have more views, its soo good.
You can laugh and cry in one episode.
All the characters are great and you fall in love with all of them. And their singing voices. The song choices are usually great too.
Its beautiful, well choreographed and well made overall. Plus the show also takes up some real issues and handles them with respect, I think.
A new fresh take on musicals.
The Underground Railroad (2021)
Based on 1-2 episodes
I came to Imdb to see the other reviews, and to decide whether or not to pursue this, but I am glad I read that this is complete fiction.
You come into episode 2 wondering wtf happened, how did the characters wind up there? After how long? It is very unbelievable.
However, what makes me give up the show is that I dont get to know, and I dont feel anything for the main characters, I need to know who I am rooting for. I dont even like them.
The first episode is very powerful, and might wake someone up to the sheer horror the slaves encountered. Unfortunately, that is not enough.
I give three stars bc its made beautifully.
Halston (2021)
This is a very (un)decent tv show
I mean, the drugs and the lifestyle, wow, really is appalling after a while!
But this is a good series, though it could be cut somewhat shorter in the 4.-5. Episode. But I thought maybe its just painful to see everything completely unravel.
Halston is definitely an anti hero, but mostly I did root for him anyways, and I simply love Ewan McGregor and I think he was perfectly cast.
The whole show is very well made, it's beautiful and the cast is great, the music is on point.
The scenes with the parfume maker are just lovely.
Well worth a watch!
The White Tiger (2021)
Not great but..
Not the worst either, since I finished it without fast forwarding (but I wanted to).
Main problem with the movie is that I dont like the main character. Even though he acts «immoral» as some reviewers claim, thats not the issue to me. In a movie you would like to root for the hero, or the anti hero.
I understand that the subject matter is, and is supposed to be, very dark, but the movie is boring, and you dont get much relief from the ending.
I would like to point out that he actually does have some redeeming qualities about him, once at the end (finally!).
The acting is very good, and its well produced. Maybe one needs to watch a dark and somewhat boring film once in a while, to take in a lot of the reality and poverty of India.
Mulan (2020)
Have not seen the cartoon
...but this movie is still crappy. It is boring. The witch plot is so incredibly thin: she is so powerful that she could do anything -including killing the emperor and nobody would even know it was murder, then take his place. She is also way too powerful to whine about being lonely. She could have just flown like a bird to a different country or continent, and easily make a new life for herself!
Mulan is an ok actor, had the script not been awful, but I suspect she is kind of unengaging. I didnt fall in love with her...or any of the characters.
Not only the storyline, but the excecuting of it, is just terrible, f ex the places chosen for battle and end battle. They seem to have tried to portray something fresh..instead of just really great fighting. The end fight is a joke!!!!
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Would argue its for chess lovers. Boring
I watched three episodes, the first two and the last I FF through. The show is beautifully made, but unengaging. The lead actress has one facial expression and I get no sympathy for her. The chess games are unbelievably tedious.
(Un)Well (2020)
About ayahuasca ep.5
I was pleasantly surprised the way they handled the subject. I did Ayahuasca three years ago and it changed my life. The stories are powerful and very moving, and different perspectives including the scientific is covered in a respectful way.
I also really liked that they included the perspective of the natives that have shared their medicines compassionately with the west.
What I feel is missing very often concerning documentaries on aya, is the fact that you are responsible to stay off medicines, drugs, alcohol and to cleanse and fast before the ceremony. The other thing is that unfortunalely aya is not healing in itself, if you are not surrounded by experienced, grounded and loving guides! The third thing is that aya requires you to work on your self and make necessary changes in your life, it is you who needs to do the work, and some experience with introspection and reflection is very useful before you choose to do it.
Sneaky Pete (2015)
Should have jumped off
The characters are not that interesting, and the plot is not at all mind blowing. If I had cared more for Pete himself, it would be nerve wrecking--maybe, but he really gets himself off the hook so easily, before the next twist. The story is a farse, rather than a build up to a climax, though they did attempt something like that, but after so many episodes it is just disappointing. Note to self: jump off the show mid air, when it is as bad as this. Sigh.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017)
One star for the pretty clothes ...
This is based on watching 5 episodes. This show is just horrible, and it doesn't get any better. I hoped that the comedy would develop more, but very little of it of it is funny, and especially with the boring and pointless side-stories it's just not enough to laugh about.
All the characters are annoying, and all the dialogue is delivered in the same way, so there is no real difference between them (or with gilmore girls, who I frankly had enough of pretty fast. How about making something original.)
Maisel herself is too spoiled, too perfect and she is a fake. If she had some kind of vulnerability, we would root for her, not to mention if she actually cared about her kids at all. If the show is supposed to be feminist in some form, it really doesn't do the job...portraying women as cold and completely insensitive isn't my idea of a female ideal.
Like another reviewer said...This show is a joke...
Stateless (2020)
Anti climatic ending
This is a good series with great actors. I feel for the characters and mostly the pace is ok, but the last episode dragged on and tried to «linger philosophically» when you just want to know what will happen. It is also an interesting that they built the whole story upon the one time a white australian woman was locked up with the refugees. Though I liked the story, it was moving, it is quite telling how we supposedly need that to relate as non-refugees...
What I do like is that they dont show a one-sided image of the people involved, and it shows how decent people May change in Incredibly difficult circumstances, on both sides of the fence.
There is a short description of the aftermath, but I am disapponted that they didnt follow it up.
What the Health (2017)
Better food lighter mood
Changing habits is scary. Not only does it challenge our identity, it seems to threaten our family traditions and our connections to friends and family. You need to learn everything you thought you knew about food, over again.
The sad part is that many do not realise that Plant based food is more delicious and more satisfying to the senses, and that it in time evolves the palate to include more of the worlds tastes and more kitchen ingenuety, if you let it. However, there are lots of great subs that either taste like meat or not. The substitutes are now ten times more available than for only five years ago, and rapidly growing..bc of demand. Imagine when everyone demands it, prices will go down too and there Is endless variations possible.
That is what goes through my mind right now. A documentary that shows how delicious vegan food is.
And yes, since going vegan a few months ago, My health is much better, inflammation stopped, more energy, lighter mood, better food...
And the transition, though made slowly at first, was not too bad!
Go for it!
Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret (2014)
And there is more...
A certain huge amount of the meat produced expires in the storage, and in the stores and are thrown in the trash in millions of tons every day. That is not counting the meat that expires in your fridge and then trashed.
We are all in denial.
Its only right in some way that meat and dairy consumption is killing us.
The negative health impact of eating animals is out of proportion. It is also the main way of making people aware and to act differently: if they only knew how sick it is making them.
Marriage Story (2019)
Beat drama in a while for sure
This one is a must watch. My fear that it would feel irrelevant or boring was so wrong. The movie really captures your attention all the way even though the theme is so mundane to me (I am a sci fi fan). The actors are phenomenal, and I suspect the director is behind this so steadily that its like a melody, that sings even at the (or mostly at the) darkest parts. The quarrel scene is so epic I cant put it into words. Laughed and cried throuhout. This movie is for real and I want to curse but imdb wont let me. Laura Dern is killing it btw!
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Fast Forward >> >>It's official, QT is a HAS BEEN
I can't believe this movie is nominated for eleven academy awards. People, don't waste your money... There is absolutely nothing to like about this movie, it was a waste of my time, and now I am wasting my time writing this.
I honestly cannot fathom the high ratings either. One noticable thing in this movie is that the camera follows the actors for the full length of their drive or walk. They forgot to cut the movie, guys! I mean, boring does not cover it. The script, dialogue, the plot (which plot?) and the missing humour that maybe could have saved 10% of it, it is all rubbish. The acting is wasted in this. I fast forwarded, That is how bad it is.
The Game Changers (2018)
I am not vegan
However, I have switched back and forth between diets for years now and I recently went back to a dairy-free vegetarian diet for health reasons, and within a few weeks I felt better and I had more energy.
Like they mention in the documentary, it´s of no use to tell meat eaters to please stop eating meat because of cruelty, bc of the environment or bc of their health, not for any reason.
If everybody cut back on animal products it would have a massive impact on the climate, and this scares people, bc of identity (this is what my whole family eats) and bc of general socializing and also fear of everything from bullying to tasteless comments.
I got them comments too as a vegetarian, and then when I discovered that I am intolerant to dairy and gluten too. Yeah, it´s annoying, however there is a huge polarization going on from both sides, and comments from vegans are equally irritating or even more: it´s like they suffer so much from not having the options on restaurants, having to read all labels and avoid tons of premade food items bc they put cheese/dairy in chips, sauses, dressings ++ and having to bring their own food to parties/family gatherings, that they want to see everyone else suffer too.
it doesn´t work, moaning will never change people´s opinion, but curiosity on body performance, and how great vegan food tastes just might.
I think this movie is well made, and I don´t mind the male perspectives, there are women here too. I think it´s bc of the adverts telling men it´s not manly to eat plants, and they´re trying to kill the myth.
It´s not easy to switch over, and the doc would be less biased if it pointed out the less ideal aspects of a plant based diet, like it can be quite expensive to eat a healthy diet, and that you need to give yourself time to switch. It´s also beneficial to give yourself time to learn how to cook a little more advanced. (anyone can throw a premade burger on the grill, it just doesn´t take any imagination.)
We produce millions of tons of meat that we neatly pack in plastic, ship to the stores, and then it is thrown in the trash bc of expiry dates. Talk about animals dying (and environment suffering) for no effing reason!
It is definitely the health aspects that inspire me to eat more plants. I started out being a vegetarian for ethical reasons, but that didn´t cut it for me motivationally in the long run, but it´s increasingly clear to me that plant based living will improve my health and keep it, and I think this movie attests to that, to appeal to the health aspects is the more effective way of making people wake up to a different kind of action, not shame them for cruelty or environment damage.
Well done!
The Spy (2019)
Cohen was made for this role
This is so good, I saw it in one go. Cohen was made for this role, and never yet saw him in a serious role which he does to perfection and he carries this beyond the point of being lead role.
To me, Eli is an extraordinary human, to have done this feat is impressive and I think that the series is about that, not to give an absolute accurate impression of the politics. I didn´t feel like the series was too one-sided either, it showed vulnerable and reckless humans on both sides, and Kamel made real friendships as a Spy, or else he´d never make it so far.
It is also beautifully made, and with lots of suspense. Wow.
The accents are annoying, and a few times it cuts scenes to make you confused, but at the same time I was more happy that the pace was great all the way through.
Jane Eyre (2011)
I think it just has spirit
I love Wasikowska, she´s the reason I wanted to check this movie out, and girl! she is just otherworldly. I think this is the best film I have seen of this kind, I don´t care much for romantic movies and a lot of costume drama films are shallow. I think Wasikowska is the main reason for the great depth and beauty here, and I also love the music. The other actors do very well too. And of course, Bronté´s writing, I don´t know how, but the story is so rich. I think it just has spirit, and this movie manages to convey it. Wow.
Sorry to Bother You (2018)
yes it bothered me
I Fast forwarded to see where it ended. This is probably a good idea for a movie in theory, but the attempted humour and the social commentary is exaggerated, over-acted, and hollow. I didn´t feel anything for these characters. I hated the score. And it dragged on.
True Detective (2014)
season one is fantastic
Thanks to reviews I can´t be bothered with the next seasons. season 1 is wonderful, the rating does it justice, extremely high by the count of people and I suspect lower ratings are on account of the following seasons.
Even though it is moving at a slower pace in the beginning, the acting is amazing beyond words. Main characters are anti-heroes, have their own demons to deal with and I guess they carry the darkness needed to pursue this nightmarish case.
Bird Box (2018)
even if the acting was better, the script still ruins everything
The movie is watchable, I think, because it´s pretty well made. That said it´s pretty well made unlikely bulls*t and even if the acting was better, the script still ruins everything from the start, especially after the crowd gathers up. The cliches are so bad this should be a comedy, but instead they are trying to throw in some wisdom at the end...which, by the look of the reviews, doesn't really touch anybody anyways :)) I am sorry but the worst part is that Bullock is too old for the role. When it comes to the mystery, I'm fine with few answers. I think more mystery could have elevated the plot a notch, if it weren't for that awful dialogue.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
season 1: 10/10 .season 2: 5/10 season 3: BORING!!!
I loved season 1. I read some of the reviews, and it seems a lot of people missed the point. The symbolism and exaggerations are there for a purpose: it´s showing us our present and our past through a sharpened lense.
Whether or not this story is literally plausible is beyond the point: This already happened! And this is happening, right now!
I think it´s genius how this dystopia sheds light on our society´s long shadows.
And to the christians who feel offended by the show...God. Don´t take it personally, the religious practices could have any name. It just so happens that our society is BUILT on female-oppressing-discriminating and oppressive Christianity. It´s not even that long ago that women couldn´t get an education or couldn´t get a divorce. The trail of blood running from Christianity and the church runs through millennia. Read some history books, folks!
Great acting, music, costume, scenography, cutting past/now. The rituals are haunting, but some of them also beautiful.
season 2, not so much. It´s OK, but I don´t know if the writers know where this is going, it´s not as tight as season1. I´m worried that they make every tv show there is into something they can milk another season of, instead of creating a great story. Unfortunately, so many shows are killed this way.
So yeah, season 2 is boring, except the last 5 minutes of every episode, so it keeps me coming back, ha ha. (and then the next episode is a total anti climax.)
season 1 is 100% worth watching even when season 2 is derailed.
SEASON 3: I don´t know why I bother.
Breaking Bad (2008)
It´s hilarious
Oh my God, this is just great. I never anticipated this series to be laugh out loud funny. The main characters are great, I take my hat off for Bryan Cranston portraying Walter Heisenberg. All the actors are just killing it.
Walters character development is interesting to say the least. Meth cooking by your next door neurotic chemistry teacher...go figure. It´s hilarious. And it hits hard too.
I´m at the end of season 2. Ep 1-2 Season 2 isn´t that good, but I am very happy I gave it one more chance.
Now You See Me 2 (2016)
terrible
Just writing this to warn people : don´t watch it! The acting, the dialogue and the plot is terrible. I´m thinking How on earth did the actors even agree to do this movie? I am happy I watched it on Netflix, because I fast forwarded most of the second part. It was so boring, and it really didn´t have a point! A big pile of mindless tricks just doesn´t do it. I literally can´t believe this movie is rated 6.5 ??!!!
