Another Period (2013)
Laugh out loud funny
Absolutely devastated that this show got cancelled while Barry and the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel continue to pick up Emmy's. Another Period put both those shows to shame. Lillian, Beatrice and Frederick are such hilarious oddballs. They're right up there with Gob/Buster/Michael/Lindsay from Arrested Development as the funniest siblings to ever be featured on TV. Give this show a try if you need several hours of laugh out loud comedy. Still so bummed that it was cancelled!
The Boys (2019)
Absolutely addictive!
I finally found a show on Amazon Prime that I love and it's The Boys! For the record, I don't really care for any of the marvel or dc superhero shows. I find the stories redundant and cliche and the acting subpar. IMO The Boys is leaps and bounds better than anything Marvel has done in the last 5 years. The story is incredible and if you don't follow the comics then I recommend going into it blind. I loved the "good guys" just as much as I do the "bad guys". The story is brisk and there is absolutely no lull in the storytelling. The B stories are just as captivating as the A stories. I truly couldn't tell where the next episode would lead next. The casting is flawless. I haven't loved a show this much since Breaking Bad. Highly recommended!
Succession (2018)
Great characters, great show, great drama
I tried watching most of the Emmy nominated shows from this year and just couldn't get into any of them. Have been looking for a show to binge since Big Little Lies ended and after a lot of misses (with the latest being Barry), I ended up watching Succession one night and absolutely loved it! Didn't get the sense it was a comedy though. I suppose it's a comedy the same way Big Little Lies has comedic moments (like when Reese or Laura Dern's character make snarky comments) but I see this show mostly as a family drama. The casting is great and watching the siblings scramble for power and leverage their positions is absolutely addictive. Kieran Culkin plays the sleazy sibling so well and if you enjoyed him in Fargo 2 then you should watch this because he is back in top form and in a role that suits him so well. If you've given the recent Emmy nominees a try and couldn't get into those shows then give Succession a go and be pleasantly surprised.
