Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
The pacing cannibalizes the story
The story is historically important. And nearly everything about the film is very good, even very, very good. Oscar's? I wouldn't be surprised. But the filmmaking repeatedly gets in the way of the story and, for me, somewhat becomes a more interesting story to watch as it slowly, slowly eats itself right before your very eyes. I mean, oh sure, we follow the characters, we know both their secrets-and that they'll be revealed. And Leo grabs your attention when on screen (but how much of that is because your eyes are dying for ... anything?). What's the one adage about time passing slowly when you watch a pot boil? And what's the other one about being a frog in a pot of water and slowly dying without realizing it? This film allows you to be the frog, the pot, the water, the stove, and the sink. And you have time for the bathroom.
Napoleoncito (1964)
If you like camp, try it in Spanish!!
Are you a fan of early 1960's-era, campy Hollywood films...? The rich and famous hanging out by the pool at the chic resorts... the women's outfits... the hunky male swimmers...the period furniture... and all the women's HAIR? This film is for you! It's all in Spanish, but non-Spanish speakers can easily enjoy the dramatic poses, the sexy looks, and the slapstick comedy as the film's protagonist Napoleoncito (Mexican Spanish for "Little Napoleon") is mocked by the elite as he relentlessly pursues the woman of his desires. Great photography. Fun with the volume turned up or turned off! Mix yourself and friends some period-appropriate cocktails and enjoy! You'll love it!
Old (2021)
Unbelievable
Even if I don't believe a film's premise, the actors and storytelling can pull me in - but neither happened for me with this film. An interesting concept ultimately wasn't enough for anything but a bad story, which was then told poorly by the filmmakers.
