Slow Horses (2022– )

Top Notch

Great stuff. Suspend belief for a while and tune into Gary Oldman and his disgusting socks with a believable crew as they are put out to grass. I have only seen series 1 but hope that they are able to carry on with this type of storyline for the next two.

The rest of his crew are also great in their own roles, and add to the twists and turns of this spy thriller.

There is quite a bit of action from armed teams and some shooting but it is nothing like the gun toting, shoot 'em up and chase them films from across the pond. The plot needs to be followed and the dialogue listened to, but your attention would be well rewarded,

Embarrassing
29 December 2023
I had been looking forward to this to parter but was very very disappointed with the end result. This was more about the class system and colonialism and the bad treatment of certain ethnic groups. Then it was about a murder mystery.

Matthew Baynton as the doctor was a good effort, but a lot of the other characters will rather wooden in their acting or so over the top they lost any credibility. I do wonder what Agatha Christie would actually have made of this? I suspect that the BBC interpretation of the works was so far removed from the original writing, that she may have wanted to disassociate herself from it. Avoiding it is the best advice.

Fisk (2021– )

Superb
24 December 2023
I have always had a soft spot for a lot of Australian comedy such as no activity. I absolutely loved that series and Fisk is in the same category as that.

I would give it a 10, but some of the visiting characters are a little over the top for my liking, but the interaction between all of them really strikes a chord.

The nonsense at the beginning of series one with the landlady was spot-on, and This continued when Fisk moved into the house with her relatives.

I like the running themes such as being banned from the coffee shop and the rather gross portraits of the Grubers makes me choke every time I see it. IYKYK!

I still have series 2 to watch and see that the series 3 is planned. That's my binge watching sorted.

Decent plot but that's it.

Warning: Spoilers
I was quite looking forward to this and hoped it would not be yet another corrupt cop story. That was the first disappointment and from there on in it nosedived to being rubbish.

Ross Kemp gave a reasonable performance as a busted DI, but had to contend with a horrible script. Most of the other actors seemed to be in an Eastenders episode. Very unconvincing.

We guessed who the killer was quite early on, even though the police themselves didn't bother us to investigate or ask the right question.

I think a rating of 4 is being quite generous, a lot of the cast were young actors and presumably cutting their teeth on this series, so maybe they deserve recognition for that.

Typical MI film but great
12 July 2023
I am not a fan of action films generally, but do like the mission impossible series.

There are no surprises in the story line, but plants of action and lots of mind blowing effects and action. From car chases, fighting on the roof of a moving train to Tom Cruise looking cool on a motorcycle, all what you expect is there.

I like the supporting actors in his team, and the improbable ability of their technology to overcome all problems. You need to be able to suspend belief for 2 and a bit hours, but just sit back and enjoy the show. Don't be a nerd and point out any errors in the film, as this is not real life! Enjoy.

Juvenile

I was really sold on the build up to the release of this film, I am so glad I didn't pay to see it. I think everything has been said about the farting and erections jokes and it does seem and I don't audience aged about 10. I stuck with it for as long as I could and then sort of skipped through the end.

This seemed to be a half decent plot, and I think with the right sort of direction, it might not of been a half bad film, but as it was misses the mark miserably.

I am reminded of the sex lives of the potato man, which was made with a loss in mind for some deliberate or obscure reason.

Just don't bother with this one I'm sorry to say.

Enjoyable nonesense

Enjoyed this one. I don't think they will be bothered by the OSCAR ceremonies following this, but it was nice to suspend reality for a while.

Harrelson is a great actor - the straight man in this one - and although Hart can be annoying, he played this for - and got - the laughs.

A mood lifter.

Is this the Goonies?

Not sure who this is aimed at - horror film or kids. One series was more than enough for me. Lots of shouting, questionable acting, predictable action.

I like a slow burner, but

This is a bit too slow for me. Worth a watch if you are OK with predictable horror scenarios, but no need to pause it if you want you want to make yourself a cuppa halfway through.

Meh....
31 May 2022
Think of all the cliches you might have seen in Top Gun, mix them up a bit and Hey Presto, a new film, Some decent flying scenes, but interspersed with the 'This'll cost you your job', 'You're the best' and 'This is the modest superhero you need to look up to" speeches, together with My Hated Colleague is Now My Best Friend and We Are A Great Team Which We Weren't When We Met plots, and you have Maverick. But it all works out in the end as the All American Hero saves the planet. Again.

I really like Tom Cruise, love Mission Impossible films, but this misses the target for me.

I love British comedies. This is British but not a comedy. I curled my toes throughout, thinking it would get better. It didn't.

Don't waste your time.

Enjoyable nonsense

Far fetched and very shouty, but really funny. Not my cup of tea usually, but I laughed out loud a few times. The two leads worked really well together, would be nice to see more of them. Good stuff.

A good watch
20 March 2022
Interesting plot twists and an unusual storyline make this a good, entertaining film set in the backdrop or 50's Britain. A far cry from gun toting car chase disaster films.

Excellent

I have just seen episode two and this is getting better and better. Hard not to compare to the original, but the leads all do a good job. A slow burner, yes, and not for anyone who lives at a fast pace. But an evolving story, believable characters and on gripping plot. Sit down, bin your phone and watch this.

Great subject, great lead actors, but the execution was pathetic. Surprise surprise, the coppers are thick, the humour wasn't funny.

I was so looking forward to this - I have wasted my life watching this.

It is time to die
15 November 2021
This format has become tired over the years. Some great action of course, but it's an extension of just about every other Bond film. And way too long.

At least they cut down on the sexism, and M and Q are great, but I would like to see something different to what has become run of the mill.

Utter nonsense
14 November 2021
But thoroughly enjoyable. Good plot twists, corny jokes and not-to-be-believed action. Good entertainment, any plagiarism is celebrated, not hidden. A film you don't have to think about too much.

Tim Roth being Tim Roth
15 October 2021
Enjoyed this one a lot. Tim Roth was the same as he was in Tin Star, Pulp Fiction and others. But this does not mean the film is bad.

Worth watching, some dark comedy moments, and you can guess most of the plot twists, but fine it a watch.

Last series was one too many.
27 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
How many times can Carrie and Saul get captured? How many times can she be recruited despite severe mental illness? By the time we got to the last series, Carries expression never changed from a sort of Angst/Fear persona.

Was never the same once we lost Peter Quinn. Should have quit whilst they were so far ahead, instead of the plot stretch.

Well, she has been captured again, so maybe it will go for good this time.
