Hit-Monkey (2021–2024)
7/10
Could be better
19 November 2021
There's a lot to like about the show. I like the yakuza plot and themes, the music, and Hit-Monkey himself.

But the show could be better. The art is good in frames; but not so much in motion. It makes the fight scenes feel less impactful.

Also: Bryce. I found him to be a highly annoying character who does nothing but spew unfunny one-liners. I enjoy comedy, but this should be a show that takes itself seriously.

Nonetheless, it is better than some other adult animated shows, and I'll gladly take this over generic fox family sitcom number 69420z.

Another win for Jorge Gutierrez
24 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Jorge Gutierrez is one of the best cartoon creators of all time, with a unique visual style and dedication to Mexico. This miniseries is yet another one of his great projects and ticks all the boxes.

Animation: By far the best part of the show. It's some of the most detailed CGI I've ever seen in a television series, to the point where I forget that it's not a movie since it just looks so theatrical. Plus, the characters often play around with the black aspect ratio bars. It just pops. 2/2

Music: A mix of Mexican-style music and music you'd hear in a western. Perfect choice. 2/2

Characters: In just nine episodes, we get to know and love the complex, messed up cast of Maya and the Three. All the characters are presented as flawed, having a somewhat gray morality. Take King Teca for example. He cheated on his wife with the goddess of death and that's how Maya came to be. There's also a lot of development, especially for the titular Maya, who commits probably the most selfless thing I've ever seen in the series finale. 2/2

Writing: It combines mesoamerican mythology, Lord of the Rings, and westerns to create an epic coming of age story. With the kinetic action, emotional moments, and clever jokes sprinkled about, there's never a dull moment. 2/2

Voice acting: A brilliant cast of Latino voice actors. You can't go wrong with icons like Rosie Perez, Carlos Alazraqui, Gabriel Iglesias aka Fluffy, Alfred Molina and so many more. 2/2

Overall, 10/10.

Karma's World (2021–2022)
9/10
Nuanced and sincere
15 October 2021
Karma's World is a cartoon created by Ludacris, based on his daughter. There's been a lot of talk about representation in western animation, and somehow, the cartoons for the little ones always succeed more than the others.

Animation: Another beautifully animated show by Brown Bag Films. The special effects when Karma performs songs in her head look great, and the hair textures are realistic. 2/2

Voice acting: The cast is a breath of fresh air as it doesn't recycle the same voice actors from other shows. They sound natural. 2/2

Music: A huge part of the show. Karma wants to be a rapper when she grows up and is often shown free styling, sometimes performing concerts in her head. The great voice acting on the part of Karma's VA helps these raps a lot. 2/2

Writing: For some reason, the show is rated TV-Y on Netflix. In my opinion, it should be TV-Y7 because it's much more realistic and nuanced than other shows for the TV-Y crowd. They talk a lot about growing up, wanting to change your name, and micro aggressions. There's an episode where Karma's nonblack friends make fun of her hair, touch it without her permission etc. We learn that black hair is beautiful and you shouldn't listen to what mean people say. 2/2

Characters: Karma is a very realistic and relatable protagonist. She's not a 100% perfect know it all, but she's not entitled and bratty either. She's perfectly flawed in her own Karma way. And her Family is great too. They aren't abusive or unrealistically perfect. They're just right. And Keys is pretty funny. However, it gets a point deducted because of Karma's classmates. If I'm being honest, they're pretty terrible people. Carrie B makes fun of Karma's name and Switch, ostensibly Karma's best friend, touches her hair without permission. If you ask me, Karma should move to yet another school where she won't have peers that do antiblack micro aggressions, 1/2

overall: 9/10.

Alma's Way (2021– )
9/10
Highly relatable show
4 October 2021
This show is created by Sonia Manzano, who played Maria on Sesame Street, one of the first Latina characters on tv. As such, this show takes place in the Bronx and puts heavy emphasis on Puerto Rican culture. I'm Latino (not Puerto Rican but still), so this show is quite relatable to me and stands out on its own.

Animation 1/2: lets get the elephant out of the room first. The animation is mediocre. That's pretty much all there is to say. Also, whatever you do, don't watch the show with motion smoothing on. Worst mistake of my life.

Writing 2/2: good writing can make up for meh animation, as is the case with Alma's Way. It's not babyish or pandering, but is highly clever and full of playful banter, along with well-researched Puerto Rican culture. There are instances where Alma talks to the Audience, but she doesn't ask them for help. She treats the viewer like a friend and speaks on their level. Nobody likes being talked down to; and thankfully Alma avoids doing that.

Characters 2/2: The Rivera family is silly and likable. Alma herself isn't 100% perfect like Blaze or 100% bratty like Caillou. She's perfectly flawed in her own impulsive, sometimes insensitive way. She always works to correct her mistakes and communicate her feelings with others. I also really like Eddie, her cousin. He has cerebral palsy but doesn't make a big scene about it. It's just kinda there, meaning that it's treated as perfectly normal and nothing to freak out about. Also, the best aspect of the animation has to be that Eddie's usage of his crutches is accurate. He doesn't always use them, just when it's appropriate.

Music 2/2: Latinos have the best music in the world, and you can bet that the composers worked hard to put salsa/Bomba music in the soundtrack.

Voice acting 2/2: Thankfully, this show doesn't recycle the same voice actors from other modern PBS shows. Rather, it brings new talent to the table. Summer Rose Castillo is the perfect voice for Alma.

In conclusion, 9/10.

Ada Twist, Scientist (2021–2023)
9/10
Excellence in science edutainment
3 October 2021
Ada Twist, Scientist is based on the book of the same name by Andrea Beatty. It also features the titular characters of her other books - Rosie Revere, Engineer and Iggy Peck, Architect.

Writing - 2/2. Highly clever and entertaining dialogue and stories. It's not overly saccharine - it's just the perfect amount of sweet and spicy. The show does a good job of conveying science lessons. Asking questions, forming a hypothesis, experimenting, and most importantly - teamwork.

Characters - 2/2. Don't expect lengthy character development arcs, but do expect entertaining, well-written characters that stand out from the crowd. Special mention goes to Ada herself. She's curious, intelligent, and never gives up, like in 12 Angry Birds where she keeps trying to prove her cat's innocence (it makes sense in context, trust me)

Animation - 2/2. Brown Bag Films did a good job of making the illustrations come to life. The way the animation is textured reminds me of Doc McStuffins, but with more realistic hair.

Voice acting - 1/2 the only reason this get a point deducted is Iggy's voice actor. No offense to the actor, but I don't feel like Iggy's voice really fits him. Nonetheless, the child cast are talented.

Music - 2/2 very catchy theme song that's been stuck in my head since I watched the first episode

Overall, 9/10.

Already in love with it
2 October 2021
I just got done watching the premiere episodes and wow, the show is already amazing. Let's break it down

Animation: 2/2 very expressive and fluid, with vibrant colors and lighting

Music: 2/2 I absolutely adore musicals, so I'm glad that the show has a song in every episode, and truth be told, they're catchy.

Characters 2/2: Molly is an exuberant ball of energy who apparently has trouble making friends and getting close to people. Scratch the ghost works as a foil to her. He's grumpy but is also an outcast.

Writing 2/2: Snappy dialogue and good humor. The series also seems to be setting up a plot line about the Hedgehog Dilemma just like Neon Genesis Evangelion- when we get too close to each other; we end up hurting each other. To love is to be vulnerable

Voice acting 2/2 You just can't go wrong with Dana Snyder, known for Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Jellystone

Overall, 10/10.

Underrated series you should check out
30 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This show wasn't advertised a lot. It's on Apple TV Plus, which almost no one has, and its very existence was kept a secret until just this year, most likely due to non-disclosure agreements. Well, if no one will hype it up, I will.

Writing - 2/2 while it does fall prey to some common cliches (western isekai, main character is an outcast, goes to boarding school etc), it still manages to stand out from the crowd with its unique universe and terminology. The stories are a nice balance between self-contained and plot-relevant to the overall arc.

Voice Acting - 2/2. The voice cast is a great mix of British child actors and well-known American actors. The voice actors for Wolfboy, Xandra, and Sprout each have a great delivery and pack a lot of emotion for serious scenes.

Animation - 1/2 probably the weakest aspect of the series. Sometimes the animation can be really great, like during fight scenes and the theme song, but most of the time, it's somewhat choppy. I'm not sure if this is intentional or not.

Characters - 2/2. William "Wolfboy" Wolfe is our hero, a loner who wears a wolf mask and gets sent to a strange realm at the center of earth, where he meets sprites named Xandra and Sprout. Xandra is fierce, passionate, and distrustful towards Wolfboy because of her bad experience with humans. It turns out that she and Wolfboy aren't so different after all, because Xandra's parents died and Wolfboy had no family except for his mum.

Music - 2/2 Very adventurous techno-like music, fitting the tone of the show.

Overall - 9/10.

Teenage Euthanasia (2021– )
8/10
Hauntingly poignant
24 September 2021
Teenage Euthanasia is probably my favorite Adult Swim show for 2021. Here's why

Music 2/2 - for once, it has an actual theme song!! Thank God!! Theme songs are becoming really rare nowadays, especially for adult animated shows, and this show has a particularly beautiful one.

Voice Acting 2/2 - A lot of talent and emotion put into it.

Writing 2/2 The premise is quite interesting. It revolves around the revived corpse of a teenage mother, who now gets a chance to raise her unplanned child. It doesn't go for the cheap, easy, and overly offensive jokes that certain other adult cartoons do. It instead took a deep look into Trophy's past life.

Characters - 1/2 the reason I rated it a 1/2 is because we don't know much about the other characters as of now, but it still gets a point for Trophy alone.

Animation - 1/2 it's somewhat mediocre, but adult swim isn't known for having Disney-like animation so I'll let it slide this time. Plus, it doesn't have that certain generic style.

Overall, 8/10.

Chicago Party Aunt (2021–2022)
6/10
Niche audience show
19 September 2021
I expressed disdain at the show when it was announced, mainly for being based on a Twitter gimmick account (yes, really) and for having that samey adult animation style. I finally watched it, and it's surprisingly not bad.

I'm not from Chicago, so take my opinions here with a grain of salt.

Voice Acting - 2/2. You can't go wrong with Lauren Ash. I loved her as Scorpia in She-Ra, and she brings a lot of life to Diane.

Characters - 1/2. Diane is a hard-drinking, partying hedonist with a disheveled lifestyle. When her nephew comes to live with her, the show sets up an arc about learning to care for others. Pretty interesting.

Writing - 1/2. Again, you'll only really appreciate it if you're from Chicago yourself.

Animation - 1/2. Yet another show with the generic adult animation art style. Like with The Harper House, you could make this into a live action sitcom and nothing would change.

Music - 1/2. The rock soundtrack is great, but it's another victim of the lack of a theme song and a generic title card intro.

Somewhat better than I expected
19 September 2021
When I first saw the announcement of the show, I thought it was going to bet yet another cheap family animated sitcom, and the art style especially turned me off.

I went in expecting the worst, but it was actually.....okay!

Music - 2/2. Probably my favorite aspect of the show. I like that the show has an actual theme song instead of just a title card like all the other shows these days. It sounds elegant, perfect for a show about a family living in a Victorian house.

Characters - 1/2. I love that the head of the family is the mom. It also doesn't use the typical sitcom stereotypes like bratty teenage daughter, dumb dad etc. They need a bit more energy infused in them though.

Voice Acting - 2/2, another enjoyable aspect of the series. Can't go wrong with Jason Lee.

Writing - 1/2. Better than I expected - somewhat. It's not edgy for the sake of being edgy and can be quite compelling. However, it gets a point deduction for the awkward racial humor seen in Episode 1. It seems like adult animation writers can't include characters of color without making the white characters awkward around them. Ugh.

Animation - 0/2. There's no denying that this is the worst aspect of the show. It's just so...bland. There's no shading and it doesn't use the medium to its advantage. The Simpsons and Family Guy are great for animation because of their zany situations. This show could be in live action and nothing would change.

Overall, 6/10.

Desecration to Awdry's legacy
13 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Poor Awdry, he must be looking down from Heaven with disapproval along with David Mitton, George Carlin, and Michael Angelis. Britt Allcroft similarly does not approve.

This show ruins everything that Thomas stood for. Thomas and Friends is popular because the characters are well rounded, the stories are strong and written well, and it adheres to railway realism despite the fantasy elements. Despite Thomas and his friends being locomotives, they seemed like real people to us.

Plus, the original Thomas was a very calm show, making it popular with autistic people such as myself. All Engines Go is a rapid fire mess with pacing faster than the speed of sound, flat characters (including Kana, one that seems to be plagiarized from a fan OC), and most importantly ....

It's very unrealistic. I know it's a cartoon, but Thomas was praised specifically because it was realistic to real life railways. This one isn't. The characters bounce off the rails and even uses their wheels as hands. Not even Chuggington got this bad.

Avoid this ableist, pandering, sensory overload mess and watch the original Thomas the Tank Engine. It's much better.

Weird
3 September 2021
Before I start this review, i would just like to say that I'm a bisexual trans guy. Obviously I'm a member of the LGBT community, but obviously not everyone shares the same opinion as me. Some like the show and some won't, and that's fine as long as we respect each other. The initial teaser made the show look atrocious, but the show is a different story.

Summary: Basically a team of secret agents, but the catch is they're all queer.

Writing: Pretty mixed bag. One moment it could be rather serious and poignant, shedding a light on growing up and homophobia. On the other hand, it has that particular brand of milennial humor, gross-out, and LGBT stereotypes galore. There's even a character named Twink for crying out loud. 1/2 I suppose.

Characters: Steve is pretty sympathetic and the first episode made me feel bad for him. I quite like Stat too, mainly her design. Twink is very annoying though and I hate his design. Who names a character Twink? 1/2 again.

Music: One of the tolerable parts of the show. Typical spy jazz akin to James Bond. There's no official theme song because certain cartoons these days can't be bothered to make one. 1/2

Animation: It's not very special, that's all I have to say. I will give props to the art style - at least it doesn't look like a Family Guy ripoff. 1/2

Voice Acting: Another tolerable part of the show. The actors did the best with what they were given and I can appreciate that. 2/2

In conclusion, 6/10. It's not a horrible show, just very mediocre leaning towards okay. I understand the need for all kinds of queer stories, but shows that hinge on yasss queen stereotypes aren't my cup of tea. I just want to be treated like everyone else.

I Heart Arlo (2021)
9/10
Great spinoff
31 August 2021
I finally got around to watching the Arlo movie just in time for this show. Both are way better than I expected.

Writing: the show isn't 100% original or groundbreaking, but not everything has to be some big masterpiece. Each of the episodes have unique self contained stories but they all tie into one bigger story. The characters get into wacky hi-jinx and have opportunities to be fleshed out. 1/2

Characters: This TV series provides more opportunities to flesh out Arlo's friends when the movie mainly focused on Arlo. For example, Alia is energetic, nerdy, but sometimes has trouble focusing. She's very obviously neurodivergent in a way that's shown to us and not told. Show, don't tell. 2/2

Music: Much like the movie the show was based on, it has some very catchy, well made songs. My favorite is the Focus song featuring Alia because it's a great representation of being neurodivergent and has interesting production values 2/2

Animation: Very expressive and colorful animation courtesy of Titmouse. It's not quite as good as the movie, but that's because TV budgets are lower than movie budgets and it still looks great anyways 2/2

Voice Acting: Retaining the voice cast from the movie, it has some very talented voice actors. Haley Tju as Alia has to be my favorite and so is Michael J. Woodward as Arlo 2/2

In conclusion 9/10.

Yet another Mickey property
21 August 2021
Summary: Yet another Mickey Mouse series. Think of it as like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, but with less interactivity and the same animation as Roadster Racers/Mixed-Up Adventures. Made because Disney needs to have Mickey.

Writing: Much better writing than Clubhouse, because it feels more organic and natural compared to the interactivity of Clubhouse. The first episode "Mickey the Brave", is surprisingly clever. The Sensational Six debate on whether or not dragons are good or bad. Some of the characters, like Clarabelle and Pete, think that all dragons are bad just because one dragon was bad to them. And as it turns out, Farfus didn't mean any harm. He only wanted to play. It gives a strong message that you should get to know people without judging them. One person is not representative of an entire group. And there's always an underlying cause for things. 2/2

Characters: The show is a major step-up from previous incarnations because Mickey isn't self-centered. Not everything is themed after him. The rest of the Sensational Six are written normally. There's also a new character named Funny, who is the titular Funhouse. He's like Toodles but he's a house. However, I'm not fond of him so far. He's just a deus ex machina. 1/2

Music: The music in the show is generally unremarkable, except for some moments that use the signature Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme - M-I-C-K-E-Y, M-O-U-S-E. I find that quite clever. 1/2

Animation: Pretty excellent animation. It serves to show that CGI has come a long way since 2006, and is very colorful. 2/2

Voice Acting: All the signature voice actors are back. And Minnie's new voice actress is a great replacement for Russi Taylor. That's all there is to say, 2/2

In total, 8/10. I recommend this to young Mickey fans and older Disney cartoon fans.

Chibi Spider-Man
9 August 2021
Starting with this review, I have a new points system. Each show has 5 elements - writing, characters, music, animation, and voice acting. Each element will be graded out of 2. If they all get 2 points, the show gets 10 stars. So let's swing into this review

Summary: Spidey and His Amazing Friends is Spider-Man for the preschool market, which is Disney Junior realizing how profitable Spider-Man and the other lower-deck Marvel characters are. It features Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Gwen Stacy.

Writing: The series has the child characters learning lessons like friendship and teamwork. While it's good for kids to learn these things, these lessons are becoming overused on Disney Junior. Kids aren't going to take away lessons from the show, they're just gonna ask their parents to buy toys. I'm not expecting Oscar-level writing, but at least do something different. Props for creativity with the setting though. And I do have to commend the writers for not putting Peter's backstory for the billonth time 1/2

Characters: Peter, Miles, and Gwen are now young children, and naturally they do childish things because of that - like argue over which ice cream flavor is the best. But they're each unique in their own way, and these differences and flaws contribute to their success. The villains are pretty entertaining because of how cheesy they are. Doc Ock would be far more sinister in any other production, but here she hams it up as a mere schoolyard bully with state of the art technology and I love it. 2/2

Music: I love Fall Out Boy and was pleasantly surprised with Patrick Stump contributing to the soundtrack. The theme song is very catchy and a nice change of pace from other Disney Junior theme songs. 2/2

Animation: The animation isn't the best, as it's rather blocky. I like the character designs and how they're super-deformed. Atomic Cartoons is better at 2D than 3D. That being said, it could've been worse. 1/2

Voice Acting; The voice actors are impeccable despite their age. They infuse energy into these iconic characters and make them seem like real children. Black Panther has a great actor with an African accent, showing us that he's from Wakanda. 2/2

Overall: 8/10.

Centaurworld (2021)
10/10
One of the weirdest cartoons I've ever watched (in a good way)
3 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I came into Centaurworld thinking that I wouldn't like it very much, just because I didn't like the centaur designs -- too simplistic. But boy was I wrong.

Centaurworld is like the Cowboy Bebop of western cartoons -- it combines so many genres into one that it becomes its own genre. There's adventure, action, mystery, drama, comedy, and a musical aspect -- every episode has tons of songs.

Not to mention the fierce juxtaposition between the gritty and dramatic nature of Horse's original realm (she's a war horse) and the fluffy cotton candy nature of Centaurworld. This is really meta -- you see, it's a commentary on the battle between comedy cartoons and story-driven cartoons. Centaurworld is both of these things and more.

I found myself not really caring for the centaur characters at first, thinking that they were annoying, but as you spend more time with them, you feel more sympathetic to them -- especially Mamawinks.

Mercury Filmworks always delivers on the animation, and they did a great job with the brown, darkish lighting for Horse and Rider moments vs the pinkish neon color scheme for Centaurworld, and the beautiful animation for both of them. The former is stylized like a graphic novel while the latter is simplistic.

I can't believe I ended up loving it, and you will too if you give it a chance -- unless you don't like musicals.

Jellystone (2021– )

A true love-letter to Hanna Barbera
29 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Scoob was rather tame and forgettable, and didn't quite work as a tribute to Hanna-Barbera. Luckily, CH Greenblatt is here to save the day. Known for zany yet heartfelt cartoons like Chowder and Harvey Beaks, Jellystone puts all the comedy-oriented/lesser-known Hanna-Barbera characters all together.

It's like The Looney Tunes show because it's sitcom-esque, yet still true to the characters and fresh for a new audience. There are a bunch of previously male characters that are now women like Jabberjaw, but this interpretation of them is fine.

Just like the show's interpretation that the Banana Splits are a criminal gang. They must have gotten inspiration from the 2019 movie.

Plus, it's got some deep cuts - the average person doesn't know about "Heyyy, It's the King!", but here, the characters from that series are portrayed as major rivals to Top Cat and his crew.

Despite the show's sitcom setup, it gets pretty unhinged and I love it. There's a vore plot, 3 kids disguising as a man in a trenchcoat and somehow becoming a politician, medical malpractice, shady DNA tests, helicopter parenting, turf wars, anime body pillows, sneaking into a party, turning everyone into jelly so you can get away from telling them you didn't read a book for your book club, gay subtext, trans subtext, and so much more.

The series is now high on my cartoons of 2021 list. Check it out, especially if you're a Hanna-Barbera enjoyer.

It's fundamentally fine, but I can't get into it
28 July 2021
Chip and Dale: Park Life has all the trappings of a basic good cartoon. It has some pretty unique animation, color palettes, and striking character designs that evoke the rubberhose days of yore while being fresh for a new audience.

Plus, the lack of dialogue makes the show accessible to fans around the globe, as is the course for Xilam.

But despite everything, I can't watch it. The sound design gave me a headache with its loudness and constant squeaking. The older cartoons were quieter and so is the new Mickey Mouse. So if you have sensitive hearing like I do, you shouldn't watch the show.

As I said, the series is perfectly fine, and I wish I could like it because its pretty fun, but the sound design ensures I won't tune in for anymore episodes. However, if you like the show, that's perfectly ok with me.

Ridley Jones (2021–2023)
9/10
Clever and historical
16 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ridley Jones is a show from the creator of Doc McStuffins and Vampirina -- Chris Nee.

It mixes Night at the Museum with Indiana Jones for a very entertaining show with just a hint of an underlying arc.

It's intended for a young audience, but the clever dialogue, high stakes, and action makes me forget that it's even for preschoolers in the first place. Never underestimate your audience. Ridley and her friends all get a chance to be fleshed out in their spotlight episodes.

Ridley is adventurous and virtuous. Ismat is a queen of Ancient Egypt, which does have historical basis -- children did rule Egypt. She has two dads, which not only promotes LGBTQ acceptance, but alludes to homosexuality in Ancient Egypt, which did happen. As she's a queen, she's stylish and a bit haughty, but also has insecurities like being afraid of the dark. This makes sense if you've been in a tomb for so long.

Peaches, despite being a famous space monkey. Is afraid of heights. This fear may seem contradictory, but it helps flesh her character out.

Dudley the Dodo Bird is quite skittish. He's the last of his kind, of course he'd be. Dante is a dinosaur who talks like a skater/surfer, which can be quite humorous and sets up his character as going with the flow but also being adventurous.

Fred the Bison is non-binary and always wants to prove themselves as tough and not cute. There's a nice little moment in the first episode where Ridley asks what Fred's pronouns are, and Peaches says that Fred's just Fred. That's a nice little moment that blended in naturally and can teach kids at home that Fred uses they/them pronouns.

The underlying arc is Ridley's mother dodging from being fired from the museum. The Jones family lives there, and if Ridley's mom is fired, they'll have to move out. Mr. Peabody makes for a threatening antagonist so far, and being fired/losing a job isn't something often talked about in preschool shows.

For some great songs, nice imagination with realistic hair and fur, lovable characters, mystery, and adventure --- check out Ridley Jones with your family, it's awesome. The one and only complaint I have is that the pacing is a bit too fast at times, but at least it's better than being slow.

Middlemost Post (2021–2022)

Everything great about nicktoons rolled into one
12 July 2021
Middlemost Post is Nick's first original, in-house cartoon in a while, because all they're focusing on now is spinoffs, reboots, etc. However, with a show like this on the horizon, we could have another hit property for the channel on our hands.

The show has all the makings of a great show. The animation is creative and expressive, utilizing mixed media just like Chowder and Flapjack.

Our three main characters are quite an unexpected trio, but work well with each other. Angus is a grizzled ex-sailor who tries to be a good guardian to Parker, and Parker is an optimistic ray of sunshine who just wants to be friends with everybody. Russell is a perfect team pet and comedy relief.

One thing I find interesting is that Parker is a reformed raincloud. He used to be a bad person, but is now becoming a good one. I love redemption and atonement messages, messages that show that no one is truly bad at heart. And it's quite personal for John Trabbic, who based this particular development on his recovery from a drug addiction.

The humor is childlike, but also smart for older viewers. In summation, the show is just so feel-good with its quirky characters and positive messages, we need more shows like this and I hope it becomes popular.

Comedy reliefs don't need spinoffs
12 July 2021
While Patrick is a great character (most of the time), he's best in small doses, as he's a comedy relief. Too much of those types of characters can get frustrating to watch. That's why Planet Sheen failed and why Cars 2 was critically panned.

He's meant to be a sidekick to SpongeBob, so he can't really support a show by himself. I find the show rather uninteresting and slow.

There are some positives to the show though. I like the designs of Cecil and Bunny - much more unique and fun than Herb and Margie from "I'm With Stupid" -- who I often forget even exist. And the animation is still great. Besides, it's only in Patrick's imagination, so none of this is canon.

I think I'll just stick with the main SpongeBob show. The least I can say is this is miles better than Kamp Koral.

Monsters at Work (2021– )

Off to a solid yet shaky start
7 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's been 20 years since the original Monsters Inc and 8 years since Monsters University. And we've been waiting four years for this show to come out. I watched the first two episodes, and while they were quite solid, they have a few problems. Allow me to break them down.

-Mike and Sulley don't appear that much. Mike is made the new CEO of Monsters Inc, with a new focus on monsters making kids laugh rather than scream. If you watched the original movie, the two had legitimate problems with scaring children, so this development makes sense. So while we do see them, most of the focus is on Tylor, a new employee.

-This wouldn't be a problem, but Tylor isn't that interesting to me. He's very much a blank slate for the viewers to project on, since he's the new guy and is confused about the new initiative by the company to be funny, much like the audience might be.

-The animation. It seems a bit rough at times, but I'll let it slide because TV budgets are way smaller than movie budgets.

-Now let's talk about the things I do like. I like the return of several fan-favorites, such as Roz, Celia Mae, and Smitty and Needleman. There's some unintended comedy in the show that got a good chuckle out of me. And the original jazz theme music is back, as well as the Art Deco style animation for the title card and credits.

This show has a lot of potential despite its flaws, so I will tune in for more episodes.

We the People (2021)

Experimental anthology music videos
6 July 2021
This show has been described as a modern-day Schoolhouse Rock and they're absolutely right.

'We the People' features unique animation in every single episode. From psychedelic visuals, to photo-animation similar to Monty Python, to a lo-fi aesthetic. Every episode brings something new to the table.

And it's the same with the music. Each episode has a different music artist sing about different parts of the constitution, bill of rights, and so on. My favorite episode is the one on the Bill of Rights. Adam Lambert is one of my favorite artists and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez managed to create an upbeat, catchy, rocking description of the first 10 amendments.

This is definitely educational and I think teachers should show it in classrooms, the kids will love it.

Plays it too safe
2 July 2021
Tom and Jerry is well-beloved for its over-the-top violence and slapstick, and it'd be nothing without that trademark humor. Despite this, moral guardians have pushed the series to be less violent. As such, recent Tom and Jerry media has been quite...safe.

This show is no exception. It's made to promote the 2021 movie and is a continuation of the Tom and Jerry Show from 2014. Both shows have/had a lot of potential, and the directors and staff are talented, but the problem is limited budget. I know that it has a limited budget because of WB's buffoonery, so they can't really improve it.

As I said, the show is safe. The slapstick is still there, but it doesn't hit as hard as it could have. Big WB cartoon franchises like this and Scooby-Doo are kept on a pretty tight leash, and while the experimentation isn't bad, their recent media ends up being quite dull and bland, and the hardships behind the scenes don't help matters.

Of course kids will love this, and they're free to - every single generation loves Tom and Jerry and that's the beauty of it. But as for me, I'll hold out hope that Pete Browngardt will make new Tom and Jerry shorts like he did for Looney Tunes.

One of the best shows
22 June 2021
I can safely say that I'm a fan of the show and that the book translates well to television. This show demonstrates that despite all the awful things going on in the world, there is good, and that pretty much any kid can change the world by having the positive traits that the heroes on the show have.

Xavier, Yadina, and Brad are all likable, have character depth, and actually seem like real kids that you would meet. Xavier is the excitable one, Yadina is the cute, snarky little sister, and Brad is the perpetually nervous and neurotic one. He reminds of Pearl from Steven Universe and Sean from Ready Jet Go.

All the heroes on the show are ones to look up to. Harry Houdini was brave, Amelia Earhart went for it, Marie Curie followed her dream, Zora Neale Hurston was confident in sharing her stories, George Washington was a great leader, Helen Keller found a new way to speak, Johann Sebastian Bach practiced, and so on.

Let's talk about the animation and art style. The animation is fluid, and the effects used when the kids travel back in time are spectacular. The art style pays homage to the iconic Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts comic strips, and just about everyone looks adorable. Please give this show a chance, it's not a "dumb baby show" or a "ripoff", it's unique, original, educational and entertaining. Probably one of the best cartoons on PBS.
