What Did Jack Do? (2017)
Think "Eraserhead"
This is David Lynch in his eerie, discomforting wheelhouse. A detective interrogates a talking monkey suspected of a horrible crime. The rest is even more strange and wonderful. Stilted lines seems to be old movie dialog and cliches strung together to form the narrative. The grainy black and white film combined with odd characters and plenty of swirling cigarette smoke set a mood that will make you squirm in your seat. Just hang on and enjoy the ride.
Beautiful People (2014)
No spoilers because there's nothing to spoil
The description for this film makes it sound like a good, solid, zombie movie. In fact, it is barely a movie. It's 40 minutes of sex,and threats of murder followed by 5 minutes of "hey, there's a zombie lab in the basement!" followed by 15 minutes of running from zombies. That's all. No real plot, sad dialog, and terrible zombie makeup. Oh, and the credits are interspersed with a news report of a zombie apocalypse which ends with...never mind, I said no spoilers and besides, you already know what happens.
I love a cheesy zombie movie This is just pathetic. Don't bother.
Another Life (2019)
Great new series
I was looking for something to watch on my phone during my lunch breaks at work. Not a high tech summer blockbuster with amazing special effects - just something to take me out of the work day for an hour.
Katee Sackoff never disappoints, so I was excited to see her in a new project. In this show she portrays a mother and wife who is torn between her career demands and missing her family. I can relate to that. She is the captain of a ship whose crew is almost young enough to be her kids. I can relate to that too. Just like in real life, some of the characters are great and some are just annoying. They try, or don't try, to get along. Sounds like my office.
If you're looking for a si-fi extravaganza that fits a rigid set of rules, this may not be for you. It's little bit different, which I think makes it more interesting and relatable. I don't know if the science is accurate, but that's not why I'm watching. I want to see the relationship between the characters. This show doesn't disappoint. The relationships are often difficult and complicated.
Although most of the story takes place in space, it doesn't have to. The themes are universal. I really enjoyed the strong female characters, the partnership between the leads, and the idea that the best person to solve your tech problems is usually the youngest person in the room.
Like a lot of series, it takes about three episodes to find its footing. Episode 4 is where things really get going. The final episode sets thing up for a second season which I would gladly watch.
Radius (2017)
Unexpectedly good
Really enjoyable. Shot primarily outdoors in wooded areas, the cinematography is beautiful. This is a character driven piece about two people trying to remember who they are and what their relationship is. Eventually they do recall and it isn't what either expected. The story is engaging and the actors are likeable. There is a sci-fi element to the plot but it isn't the focus of the movie. I definitely recommend.
Into the Dark: I'm Just F*cking with You (2019)
It's a no for me
Not funny, not scary, not creative. Just a guy being brutalized by a psycho. Kinda reminds me of Christmas with my jerk brother-in-law who would be a total a**hole to everyone then tell them he was just kidding. A grating, grinding story. Acting and production were fine.
Extinction (2018)
Entertaining and enjoyable
Not every movie will win Oscars. Some will just be 90 minutes of entertainment. This was one of those. The story is interesting and resolves well. It may remind you a little of "Cloverfield" at first, but it becomes something else. Michael Pena and Lizzy Caplan are always strong and deliver the performances you expect. Don't read any spoilers and be sure to watch all the way to the end to get the full impact of this film. It is well worth your time.
Cargo (2017)
This is not a horror movie.
This is a movie about a father doing his best to take care of his infant daughter under the worst possible circumstances. Yes, it takes place after a zombie apocalypse and you will see some of them, but that isn't the focus of the film. The film is about happens to the survivors of a catastrophe. As in life, some become violent, some protective, and some form communities with other survivors. There are spots where the film dragged and it clearly could have been cut to 90 minutes. Still, the story is engaging, the acting is enjoyable, and it is definitely worth watching.
Anon (2018)
You'll need a cup of coffee
A little Matrix, a little Minority Report, and a whole lot of slow and ponderous non-action. It's not a bad movie but it moves so slowly that you're free to leave the room periodically without missing a single plot point. The soundtrack intends to create an ominous tone but really makes the whole movie even more down-beat and depressing. The story is interesting and the acting is great yet the movie comes off bleak and dull.
Night Fare (2015)
Interesting film
Worth watching, but don't expect too much. Two friends on a night out in Paris decide to be jerks and they get their due. Pretty straight forward, except that three quarters in, the film takes a sharp turn and becomes something other than a standard slasher film. Stick with it until the end.
The Open House (2018)
The House is the Star
The house is clearly the star of this film. It's huge, it's beautiful, and it has an amazing kitchen with a fantastic view. After you get a good look at it, go ahead and turn this film off. There's no real plot and no character development. The ending is vague and unfulfilling. There's no particular reason to watch this movie.
