The Vatican Tapes (2015)
I loved it.
Don't listen to reviews it's worth finding out for yourself. I almost gave it a 9 but it's been over a year I watched it and cannot confirm, but I needed everyone here to know that the low imdb rating is quite unfair.
Opening Night (2016)
If you are theatre nerd like me
Then watch this. It's funny. Rob riggle Is rob riggle. Honestly great time. Also nineties kids will get more from it in terms of hot spot of most relevance but idc how many movies are there like this I want to know. There's like one good from each genre such as horror or Fellinis eight and half etc where you go thru the production. What s fun ride. Snd you don't need to be a theatre contest winner to get ninety percent of the references. Loved this.
Holidate (2020)
AMAZING.
Best Romcom maybe ever. It's a top one. I love it. But honestly. Great writing. Acting. Omg. Creativity. The market scene near the end is hilarious. So much to say. Dude look at the cast. If you're into anyone you're already in. If not and like / love rom coms it's fire, nice surprise after the crabshoot of the past decade or two or whatever. We don't get a classic romcom every year. But rona has done it. This is money. I don't wanna single out any one actor but this cast is fire. The writing is top, sure it's a romcom but its top. It has it all.
Repeat Attenders (2020)
Great doc for what it is
And what it is is a documentary about theatre souvenir/ memorabilia collectors (don't wanna say hoarders even tho I do because they're organized in the collecting and it's for a specific passion). I can understand the love for theatre it's sad knowing these people are trying to have a piece of theatre that they weren't able to pursue themselves.
Servant (2019)
Watch it, if...
You can handle the heavy subject matter.
If you can, then this is a masterpiece of a first season, even if it's not "perfect" to all, what is perfect?! This show is, in terms of making you wonder at all times what is going on. What a great way to know this is a great show. All the actors of which theres really only 4 main ones including Ron from Harry Potter who kills it, specially with his American accent. Blows my mind lol.
Some episodes directed by M. Night. Clearly that's probably what enticed me to bite. Then by end of first episode I was like, damn. Let's do this. I need to know if hats gonna happen. And each episode gives you some to chew on. It's a lot of talk and beautiful visuals and directing and yeah, but it feels like it's action. I actually was happy after a while to see no "actual" action, but rather more story unfolding. It just felt like new ideas being rolled into one.
Also as a horror fan I love it, and that might make you more interested in this since you'd be akin to such topics, yet it's no gore fest in the slightest, nor has pop ups really. It's like a horror drama. Reality horror drama? In the sense that it's this new thing that could be the new thing. Just under horror, where "normal" people can watch, but this still is deserving of horror genre label ( a funny concept I know, considering horror apparently means value to me).
As a non horror fan tho, this is fine. It's not scary, it's iust specifically the subject matter. I feel like you have to know what it's about, but might be a spoiler? You find out almost instantly, but yeah. At the least you know this, this woman is now taking care of a baby doll and her husband is emotionally supporting her... and go from there. Hire a nanny for the doll... creepy. And so that's the horror of this really, plus one more thing to be squeamish about for some of you: topics and symbols of religion everywhere in this, but not in a bad, "in your face" (though it is) ruining the show kind of way. Only in am adding to the lore way. It's kind of the Hereditary vibe but a notch down in horror.
Wow though. Wish there was 10 seasons out somehow, but to be honest, I don't even know how they're going to get past season 2...
Don't wanna spoil why it feels that way, but clearly it's totally possible to carry the story on. And the beauty of it is we have no clue how this story carries on even in just at the end of the final episode of season 1.
I love/d this show. The actors are great. All of them. All of them are well cast, even though one dude annoys me. Feel bad saying this, but the chef assistant. He's the only one really with nothing to him. Even the neighbor girl (Asian young one) does her job well even though I hated her character, that's clearly her doing a good job, or at the least fitting that character naturally (lol). Cinematography is a high budget horror film, but with low budget in locations since it's just the house really. Amazing when you think about how they get 90% of the story across at the house. You live with them during this time, rooting for Dorothy's brother played by Rupert Grint and eventually more characters than you'd expect to root for, even though you aren't completely sure what's going on, and still don't completely know but the end of the season. And that is totally fine. At the very least, for now, until otherwise ruined, this is a masterpiece of a show. Everything has come together excellent and the only fluff there is tends to add finer details to the plot and character development which makes you want more, so not having all the answers feels great because the show is a juggling act of presentation of information. And entertainment. And mystery. And horror. Real life horror. Magically though, it doesn't weigh you down as much as you'd expect from this subject matter. Especially since I've felt more weighed down by other shows in the past with lesser "weight". If you respect the art of filmmaking, watch this, as it's another worth piece of art. Those people will already watch this no doubt. But those of you on the fence, watch this. Unless, and only if, you cannot take the subject matter which I could totally understand, for people like my mom for example. She's a general type that couldn't watch this (probably), but there's a specific group of people that might have too much attached to be able to enjoy the watch, as it doesn't necessarily provide a happy ending ever, yet...
Wow, great job everyone involved. Now what do I watch... ran through this in two days; I hope all Apple TV maintains this quality, because as of right now, that quality (coming from this show) is higher than any Netflix or Amazon Prome I have seen. I hope it's not a fluke, but I know that everything was accounted for to make it possible, no corners were cut short in the acting, directing and producing departments. Or any departments it seems.
10/10

Fantasy Island (2020)
Still fun, feels like...
Cabin in the Woods the Television Movie. Like a low budget version but still serves that audience more than most any other horror since CitW. Not a genius movie, but it's one I didn't regret watching. At all. So 6.
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
In some cases could be higher, in some lower, GREAT NEW COVER ART!
I don't know when they changed the cover art, but props for that.
By my caption, what I mean to say is: this could really be a masterpiece to someone out there and deserves it; it could also be a total shxt show to another and deserves that too. That's the thing with all art though, including great art: it can be awesome to one person and stupid to another.
Though, overall, to the above average movie viewer, who also slowly becomes a critic with each movie as their knowledge base grows and taste develops, this movie is worth watching, but to call it a must see is not necessarily true, because of the few big things missing from it, things that cannot merely be identified. You know, like, when a movie just doesn't feel perfectly right the way a masterpiece like The Dark Knight feels. That movie needs no debate: the pacing never feels off, the movie is carried gracefully from scene to scene. A Cure for Wellness doesn't feel that way. At parts it feels dragging, but rightfully so for those who don't mind the wait. Patience is virtue.
Basically, the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts. All the parts (cinematography and actors especially, theme, story, script, music, etc) are all superb, but something about it is just not weaves together so seamlessly like other classics. So that's the thing, this movie does not seem to be a classic, or a cult classic (since it's in the middle and cult classics have a niche/quirk/gimmick about them being classics without being masterpieces outside of their niche market, the target audience of which tends to make itself known long after research for marketing has already been done).
TLDR; well for one I didn't say anything because everything's a spoiler really, even damn trailers of which movie companies have no remorse when revealing crucial information in them. Watch this movie if you got 3 hours to delve into an original, some hat stress/anxiety inducing story. I don't mean that to intimidate you, only to better acquaint you with the feel since the longline for the movie really only says enough if you've seen the movie.
Inception (2010)
Simply put, spoiler free:
This is a real review. The 10 isn't me being funny; this is my system: any movie can be a 10 if it is GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS, however I see/ deem fit per each individual movie, in no comparison to other movies, except to help make a better judgment in terms of relativity and consistency in my rating system.
That being said, it gets a 10, because:
1) great casting, big and small, right choices were made, though not necessarily irreplaceable.
2) great performances by cast, with Leo leading the show like the master he is, though not particularly the best performance of his life he's just great all the time he chooses to work. Great support no doubt, each actor has continued on careers of their own lead roles.
3) high budget means it didn't need to cut corners to make the movie happen, so like all the crazy gravity defying scenes, environments, action scenes, top quality script, top notch cast only money can buy.
4) cinematography, top, shots look great, masterful, specially the water shots just stick to me like they're my own life memories.
5) script/ plot, innovative and clean to the point. Lengthy movie that is pretty much a thrilling ride the whole time. Though it concerns the whole entering dreams Sci fi aspect, it feels like a thriller in general, so even though it satisfies the science fiction genre, it does not count out audiences that are not fans of science fiction, like my mother for example, though the dream stuff does go over her head. Story/ movie could have gone many different ways, but overall good decisions were made for progressing and concluding the plot.
6) open ended resolution but that can be debated, in terms of getting closure for our protagonist and what his future holds.
7) it's a movie worth rewatching which I think is probably the most fundamental and consistent trait of a perfect movie, which leads to the next point.
8) timeless, I do believe this movie will stand the test of time because of its unique plot and quality and minimalist of any cgi used.
Finally, this could definitely be a 9, or an 8, or maybe even a 7 to some people... but realistically i don't think anyone on earth would or should give this movie less than that, because work and passion went into this movie; there is no way around that, and I happen to be one of the critics who appreciated all of it.
2020 INCEPTION REVIEW
10 out of 10.
Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
It could be worth 10 really
If you don't judge it harshly on dumb things. I just loved it for many random reasons, like how this was almost a movie about if Eddie Murphy had to struggle to get a movie made in a time where demographics didn't allow it. I don't know, Wesley Snipes and his character. And then finding out this is a pretty true story?! Netflix is picking up with originals. All the actors do a great job at their jobs, even if it's not an academy award winning type job, they entertain, and actors like Kegan Michael Key finally give a different acting role for fans who already know he can do it. Again, this role had a parallel to his actual experience and life. It's pretty much what Disaster Artist is for The Room, even if both these movies are just promos for old content, it is well done. What's great is how the new films are pretty much better in every way than the movies they're about, but it doesn't matter because the old ones are cult classics that serve different purposes. It's funny, and surprisingly smart whether with low or high expectations. It's not Inception or something, lol but just understand it's good.
