C'era una volta il West (1968)
Great Western, great film.....
Beautifully shot from start to finish. Great music, and some very fine performances, Henry Fonda is excellent playing against type. Also Jason Robards is terrific. My one and only criticism which stops it getting the top marks of 10 out of 10 is the casting of Charles Bronson. Luckily, he doesn't spoil the film as such, I just feel it would have been so much better to have cast a better actor. Bronson adds nothing to the part. Anyway, that's enough negativity, it's a film I watch every few years as it's so very well made it has great action sequences as well as some touching ones such as Robards demise.
Theatre of Blood (1973)
Great Fun
Vincent Price with that fantastic voice and presence is so perfect for the part, he seems to be having the time of his life. With a very good supporting cast of Diana Rigg, Arthur Lowe, Ian Hendry and Dennis Price amongst others this is a film which offers up a helping of gore with good fun. The set pieces for each of Prices revenge killings are enjoyable but to see his over the top performance is a joy to behold, he seems to relish getting his own back on the critics who he feels blighted his career. It's nicely shot on location and the end is fitting. I really enjoyed this especially Vincent Prices performance.
Trainwreck (2015)
Very Enjoyable
I was actually given this as a present and it's quite strange watching a film you know nothing about. But it was very enjoyable and very funny, Schumer is excellent in the main role and all of the cast do a fabulous job. It's wonderful to find out after seeing the film that Amy's boss is played by none other than Oscar winner Tilda Swinton, a fantastic actress who is hilarious in this. Tilda looks and sounds amazing and adds a lot to the film, her scene's with Schumer are really funny. It's a great way to spend a couple of hours with an enjoyable, funny movie playing out in front of you. Definable recommend this.
Travel Man: 48 Hours in... (2015)
Funny and Informative
Richard is very funny in his role of the tour guide. It's no coincidence to me that the best episodes are when his guests don't try and match his wit. Luckily there are only a couple of episodes which fall flat due to his guest trying to chip in too much. I love the information he gives us and the scenery at times is beautiful. His socially awkward act (wether it's true or not) works beautifully, he is so perfect in his role of presenting this program that you can watch these episodes over and over. Kathy Burke is one of my favourite programs as you can always imagine her being such great, honest company. Richards boots are too big to fill, but he left us with some great memories.
The Footage Detectives (2021)
Can't Help But Enjoy.
I suppose when you think about it, there's no other program on TV like this. Very enjoyable nostalgia, some of the clips are facinating and most of the show gets you thinking about your childhood wether it be TV programs, comics or music. It's always interesting to see the reels of Britain from (say) the 40's or 50's.
The banter between Mike and Niel is nice to see. I can't agree with an earlier review about Mike Read, I think he comes across as professional and sometimes is like a naughty schoolboy. Let's face it, Niel is terrible at reading the que card, but this is the man who started TPTV and is so knowledgeable about the filmmaking process that he is still an asset.
Long may this program continue.
Maryland (2023)
Very Average
A reasonable idea, which the longer it went on the more daft and uninteresting it became. It was a poor ending which just got too sacarined for me. I'd love to know how much Stockard Channing cost to hire because it bears the question, Why? She was like a fish out of water, in this country we have some great actresses who would have been better suited. Otherwise, the acting was good, especially Eve Best. But for me the story didn't worked and as it progressed it just got sillier, I suppose like most people I watched it in case there was some fantastic twist at the end but it was so disappointing.
Professor T (2021)
Very Entertaining
An enjoyable hours entertainment. I very much enjoy the fantasy/musical interludes and Frances de la Tour is brilliant.
Doctor Doctor (2016)
A Breath of Fresh Air
We'll acted, very good characters and great story lines. At times this programme is very funny, "pretty titty bar" for example. I've enjoyed every episode of the Heart Guy as it's called in the UK.
Public Eye: Mrs. Podmore's Cat (1972)
Thank Goodness for Talking Pictures.
This program fascinates me. I remember it being shown when I was young, but couldn't remember if I'd seen it or not. Talking Pictures started showing it so it was the perfect opportunity to see what I thought of it.
Well, some other reviews have mentioned, no mobiles, no car chases, and no sex. But what it does have is a very good actor in the lead and a warts and all insight into his business. Burke is terrific as Marker and I've been so engrossed in these repeats that I've purchased many of the DVDs and thoroughly enjoy them.
In a way it's the perfect antidote to so many shows which feature so much sex and violence. Very much recommend.
Without a Clue (1988)
Very Enjoyable
This seems to get poor reviews in the main stream of critics, I can't think why. It's lovingly produced with fine performances and a great chemistry between Kingsley and Caine. It's funny with great settings.
Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators (2018)
Likeable
I enjoy the 3 main leads and the scenery is lovely. When you tune into this don't expect a classic comedy/drama it's quite entertaining and the interplay between the 2 detective's is entertaining. However the plots are very slight and the guest stars vary between very good and very ordinary (as per Vic Reeve's). It's worth tuning in though for a easy going giggle.
Laughter in Paradise (1951)
Charming And Funny
Very enjoyable, especially when Sims is on screen. Here's an astonishing fact: Alistair Sim was nominated for one bafta, never won an award!!!! Was the world such a strange place then that this truly great comedic actor didn't win any awards?
Fathom (1967)
A Load Of Baloney
Mostly, a really good cast, and let's face it if you're going to sit down and watch it you're not going to expect anything sufficticated. It's an enjoyable, silly romp and if you enjoy looking at a real woman such as Welch, all the better.
Miss Marple: A Caribbean Mystery (1989)
The Best, by the Best
Many years ago before Joan Hickson started in the role, Margaret Rutherford was my favourite Miss Marple and couldn't envisage changing my mind. However now, for me Hickson is the best, and this is the best episode, just!
She is ably assisted by an excellent Donald Pleasance.
Schindler's List (1993)
Brilliant, but heart wrenching
To my shame, at the age of 61 I've just watched this film for the first time. It's brilliantly made, although a difficult watch. My biggest surprise how good Neeson is, he's surrounded by some great actor's but more than holds his.own.
Death in Paradise: The Stakes Are High (2018)
Just about entertainment!
Apart from the lovely scenery, there's very little to recommend this show. The plot's are poor, and they always finish in the same way with the inspector gathering around the suspects in a room to give his verdict. However, the biggest drawback is the acting, its dreadful, the supporting cast is no more than average, but Ardal O'Hanlon is awful, whose bright idea was it to give him the lead in a prime time series? He cannot act and delivers his lines as though he's never performed in his life. Now I loved father Ted and O'Hanlons performance was suitable for playing a part such as that, but in Death In Paradise he ruins a poor show...if that was possible!
Shetland (2013)
Enjoyable.
This a very well made drama, beautiful scenery and good story lines. What raises it above the ordinary is Henshall, who is very good indeed. He carries the programme, although the guest stars are of a good quality. This show will be too slow for some people and I have too say that the regular cast apart from Julie Graham are a little below the required quality needed to make this a classic, having said that the whole programme is worth watching for the excellent Henshall.
Some Like It Hot (1959)
Soooooooo Fabulous.
Well, there are more qualified people than me giving their opinions on this classic. Let me just say that it is probably the greatest comedy film ever made, the cast, the set pieces, the direction are all so perfect. I have enjoyed this film for many years and if I want to see how good comedy can be on comes the DVD again, bliss!
Carry on Screaming! (1966)
A Good Carry On.
Definitely one of the best, although not in the class of Kyber. Harry H. Corbett fits well into the run of things and the cast altogether were very good. Kenneth Williams seems to be enjoying himself and Miss Fielding is a delight. The back drop to the film is well done as well.
Bung, bung, bung.......what a fitting name!
Carry on Up the Khyber (1968)
The Best Of The Series.
I retired from work a year ago, and one of the gifts I received was the box set of the Carry On series. Now this was a surprise as I like most people have seen them over the years but wouldn't describe myself as a fan. Anyway as they were kind enough to buy me the DVD's I saw it as my duty to watch them all again and grade them out of ten. It was hard going to be honest ,but it confirmed my suspicion that this was the best. Its well made, funny with really good performances and is less crude that most. Sid James, Kenneth Williams and Berbnard Breslaw are excellent, but how I wish Roy Castle wasn't in it, he's really out of his depth. Jim Dale would have been fantastic. Never mind, still very enjoyable and definitely the best by quite a way.
