Raw (2016)
7/10
An Amazingly Enjoyable Atrocity
5 June 2017
What a disgusting way to spend an hour and a half. Raw is one of those things that's disgusting and grotesque, but so intriguing that you can't look away.

All the acting seems good, and the characters are interesting enough. The movie takes a bit of time to really pick up, and some scenes can seem pointless (like a lot of the hazing rituals) but from there I had my eyes glued to the screen. The themes this movie has about human instinct is so terrifying and horrid, but is so entertaining because of the way the main character turns from a normal girl into something much different. A lot of people are critiquing the ending of this movie too, but I loved it!

Overall, this movie is definitely worth a watch. It's not like a masterpiece or breaking new grounds or anything, but it's so messed up and so disgusting that it keeps you entertained it's whole runtime.

Wonder Woman (2017)
5/10
A Step Forward For The DCEU
3 June 2017
Considering the quality of other DCEU films like Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad, I think I was justified in being skeptical before seeing this movie. I came into this movie expecting the worst, but I was definitely surprised. Is Wonder Woman one of the best superhero movies ever made? No way. But I do think this is the best DC movie since The Dark Knight Rises (which I know isn't saying much), and I think I have a tiny bit more faith in upcoming DC movies now.

I'll start off with my biggest complaints. Everything that happens until Wonder Woman and Steve leave the island is terrible...it's full of bad acting, clichés, and awful CGI. This movie can be so cheesy and so cliché sometimes, and it's not self aware of it. Some scenes that are meant to be dramatic come off as laughable. The movie's tone is very inconsistent, and again, it's unaware. There's some pretty bad green scene too. Most characters besides Wonder Woman and Steve are either uninteresting and/or annoying. The soundtrack can also be repetitive. This movie also has like three villains for some reason, the main one being so underdeveloped and forgettable. Some elements of the story are very predictable too, and the climax of the movie is so horrendously awful. From the cringe-worthy one liners to the goofy effects, I was just waiting for the movie to end from that point. Basically when the main villain is introduced (which is like 20 minutes before the end of the movie) the movie becomes 10 times worse.

I don't want the cons to turn you off though, because I'd still recommend this to action/superhero movie fans. There's actually a lot of good humor in this movie that's a refreshing take from the previous entries in this universe. This movie felt like a breed between the first Captain America movie and the first Thor movie, although I like Wonder Woman better than both of those. The action in this movie is also pretty intense and riveting, minus the climax. The movie really nails the WWI setting as well. I liked the banter between Wonder Woman and Steve too, the chemistry between them was there. I was unsure if Gal Gadot was a good Wonder Woman when I saw her in BvS, but I now see that she's a great choice. She's very funny and charming, and not a wooden, thrown-in prop like she is in BvS.

I wouldn't go into this movie expecting a 10/10 rating, because this movie has a lot of flaws. The 96% you're seeing on Rotten Tomatoes and other critic sites are a lie. If you can suspend your disbelief for a bit and accept it for a cheesy superhero movie, then you'll like it. I enjoyed it so much more than the previous entries in this universe that it gives me a small bit of hope in the future of DC, even though we deserve better than this.

Memento (2000)
10/10
Risky Experiment That Works
30 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure if I've ever thought so much about a movie after I finished it than I have with Memento. Where to even begin with this movie...

I remember that all of the performances in the movie, especially Guy Pierce of course, were very solid and believable. I liked the almost noir-feeling that it gave off, and I liked the setting a lot too. But none of these are the selling points of the movie.

The way this movie presents itself is so unique and thought provoking. The way that the story is told is unlike anything I've seen before, and the way Nolan uses colors and editing to piece a story that leads into the middle of itself is so weird and experimental, but it makes this movie so great. I can definitely see how this method of storytelling made a lot of these people leave 10/10 ratings.

There were a few things about the movie I was a bit off on, however. I do wish that the movie didn't spoil its chronological climax at the beginning of the movie, because it kind of ruined the rest of it in my opinion (even though the plot twist at the end of the movie was unexpected). I found this movie to be kind of confusing at times, and sometimes I couldn't help but lose track of what was happening. I get that in a sense it's supposed to make you feel that way though, so maybe we can chalk those up to my stupidity.

Overall, I'd really like to see more films take risks like this did. There are so many points where this movie could've gone wrong, but it never did. Maybe I'd consider making this a 9/10 on a second viewing, but either way I'm completely sold on Memento.

Something For Everybody
30 May 2017
I personally find it hilarious how an animated movie from 2004 manages to be a better superhero movie than a lot nowadays.

I'd definitely say The Incredible is one of Pixar's best movies. The environment that's set up with superheroes and their portrayal in society is something I'd love to see be tackled in more superhero movies. This is the definition of a great kid's film, something that can be seen by all audiences and be appreciated the same.

It's not often that I see a kid's movie that can be so mature and gritty, yet still be lighthearted and fun. I can respect this film for being a good time while also being a movie that teaches kids that not everything is always so innocent and straightforward in these types of movies. This is without a doubt Pixar at it's best, and I'm glad to say it still holds up after 13 years.

Intrigue Makes Up For Flaws
23 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Imitation Game is a film that tells a story everybody should know. It's nice to see a war movie that takes a different approach from films like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, and show the technical sides of war.

Benedict Cumberbatch gives one of the best performances of the year, and all of the supporting cast members deliver on their roles as well. The movie is so intriguing and interesting, you will stay invested in this movie for the whole run-time. Watching Alan Turing try to solve the enigma code while getting along with his co-workers, trying to keep his job, and hiding his sexuality all add so much depth to the story. This is definitely a film that will have you invested the whole time.

This film is pretty great, but sadly not flawless. There are a few pretty cheesy moments, and the flash forward scenes can be hard to distinguish from the present events. The film also has a tendency of missing opportunities with certain plot lines. For example, there's a side-plot about one of the mathematicians being a soviet spy. Once the soviet spy is revealed, they do nothing with it for the rest of the movie, probably because it's so close to the end of the film and they need to wrap it up. There are a few other plot lines that I personally felt the film could've done more with.

Despite it's flaws, The Imitation Game is still worth seeing. It has an amazing performance from Cumberbatch, an amazing setting that nails the WWII vibe, and a story that everybody should hear.

Rare Combination Pulled Off Perfectly
23 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Is Inglorious Basterds on the same level of greatness as Saving Private Ryan? No. Will Inglorious Basterds be remembered as a classic in the way we remember Full Metal Jacket? No. Is it a great way to spend 2 and a half hours? Absolutely.

Probably the best part of this movie is Christoph Waltz as the villain. He comes off as very intimidating and cold, it's no wonder he won an Oscar for his performance. Brad Pitt is also much different in this role than in his previous works, but he pulls off his character very well.

There are some genuinely heart stopping scenes, like the pipe scene and the bar scene. There are also some hilarious scenes, like the climax and Brad Pitt's Italian accent. Under another director I could see how they would mix the two types of scene in a way that made an inconsistent tone, but Tarantino knows how to make a movie amazing and funny at the same time. If you're looking for a realistic war movie with deep characters and gritty war scenes, I'd suggest you keep looking. If you're looking for a fun time, you've found it.

Major Disappointment
22 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
2017 is definitely a shitty year for Aliens fans. From the deaths of the beloved John Hurt and Bill Paxton, to this disappointment from the mind behind the original horror classic.

I remember being one of the people who wasn't as angry when Prometheus came out. It definitely had major flaws, but it was at least something new and compelling, and had some good performances from Fassbender, Theron, and Elba. Alien Covenant tries to be the love baby of Prometheus and the original Alien, and fails at being as enjoyable as either.

The only enjoyable parts I got out of the movie were Michael Fassbender's performance as both Walter and David, and some fun deaths (probably Ridley Scott's most gory film to date). The rest of the movie is so deprived of anything interesting or for the most part, scary. All the characters besides David and Daniels are boring and disposable, and even Daniels is just there to be a less badass and less charismatic Ellen Ripley. The plot holes are way more noticeable than in Prometheus (which is saying something) and characters constantly make stupid decisions. The acting and cinematography are just fine, but not enough to save the film as a whole.

I don't remember getting scared once throughout the entire film. The movie is very predictable to the point where you can always sense a jump scare before it happens, and even the aliens look stupid. Not only is the CGI much worse than you'd expect from a movie with an almost $100,000,000 budget, but they make the xenomorphs look stupid by having them out in broad daylight. And the new "neomorphs" are completely useless to the story until they have an actual excuse to introduce the xenomorphs.

Overall this movie is disappointingly mediocre. This is more of a modern day stupid horror movie than it is a unique Alien movie. Most people reading this have either already seen the movie and know what I'm talking about, or have not yet seen it are going to see it regardless of reviews. Well just don't say we didn't warn you.

The Revenant (I) (2015)
9/10
Modern Day Masterpiece
22 May 2017
The Revenant is honestly one of the best films of not only 2015, but of the decade.

All of the acting feels so genuine and raw, especially from Leo, who doesn't have many lines to begin with. Tom Hardy is amazing as always, and even the supporting cast members like Will Poulter do much better than you'd expect.

The most astounding part of this movie is definitely the cinematography from Emmanuel Lubezki. The wide shots of the movie's setting will take your breath away, and make you so glad Alejandro González Iñárritu decided to film this movie naturally instead of with green screens galore. And the action in this movie is even better than most summer action movies these days, which is odd considering this isn't much of an "action" movie. The long continuous shots of fight scenes and chase scenes will burn themselves into your head.

This movie is a modern day masterpiece. Every time you leave this movie you're always going to want to come back and watch it again. There are so many scenes that will have you at the edge of your seat, specifically the bear scene and the climax. Everything about this movie is memorable and astounding, and I cannot recommend it enough.
