One of the best movies I've seen if a long time and an all time favorite Tilda performance!
15 March 2024
I came in expecting a fun, wild, and interesting experience and this movie delivered ten fold. It was one of the best movies that I have seen in theaters in a long time and has one of my all time favorite performances by the ice queen herself, Tilda Swinton. My date and I laughed, we cringed, we were captivated, and at the end we were both crying tears of joy. It was heartfelt, surreal and a rare pleasure for us both. Tilda is both the villain and a sort of hero as well. We were both very impressed with the acting, writing and directing all of which were spearheaded by Julio Torres. I can't recommend this movie enough.

Six Feet Under (2001–2005)
10/10
One of the best, if not the best TV shows ever made
25 February 2024
I consider Six Feet Under to be one of the most complex, beautiful, horrible and inspiring works of fiction to capture the wonderful chaos that is both life and death. As a young gay man it was inspiring to see an ensemble drama where a gay character was not a focus, but rather an essential part of life. The stories are both funny, scary, sad and happy all at once, much like life. The acting is incredible and the performances are both over the top and nuanced. There is not a single episode that I feel "lags" and the finale is almost perfect (including the episodes leading up to it). Watch it in order and watch it many times. It is an extremely rewarding viewing experience that doesn't just give you a slice of life, but gives you the whole loaf from the oven to the grave. A+

A complex and ambitious episode. Not great for new viewers
13 December 2023
I'm really surprised by some of the ratings of these episodes with Whitaker. They're all painfully low. Yes, some of the episodes aren't great. There were maybe too many companions in the previous two seasons. But with this I don't know...I thought it was pretty great.

You have A LOT going on but none of it is ever boring or filler. We have multiple conflicts and enemies introduced but I thought it did it really well. My only issue is both a positive and a negative. This episode is made for dedicated viewers and would undoubtedly confuse new viewers.

Ultimately I thought it was great. It sets up an epic storyline, Yaz has really grown as a character and the actress playing her is improved. Not sure why people downgrade these episodes. Jodi is fantastic.

A fantastic film experience. A nearly perfect end cap to the career of one of cinemas most talented directors
10 December 2023
This movie blew me away. I thought at first I had been misled in marketing in that the film would be more somber and slow but the unique pacing definitely builds to a mind blowing finale. The visuals are the star here. And there is both a familiarity here with his other works, paired with a strange sense of novel wonder. The plot beats can be a bit confusing at times, but I also think the film invites us to sort of surrender to the dream logic of the world. The film is complex, strange, sometimes shocking and upsetting, other times poignant and sweet. A true kaleidoscopic masterwork, with gorgeous and painterly visuals, striking music, and metaphors about life, loss, and how to live.

A great re-introduction and throwback to one of the best doctor who duos
26 November 2023
This episode wastes no time in jumping back in with reconnecting with two of new doctor whose favorite pairings. The episode moves at a great clip, has some real heartfelt and also funny moments, and ultimately is a refreshing and enjoyable classic romp. As a 60th anniversary special it doesn't really cover anything grandiose like you might expect (no Daleks versus cybermen versus autons) but I think ultimately that's a smart move. We get a "new" monster (only having appeared in comics and audio adventure) and get to focus on our reteamed duo of Donna and Doctor. Her family storyline is meaningful and welcome and is also welcomingly modern. I imagine some conservatives will be complaining about the identity politics, but let them cry. It's a great return to doctor who and also the start of a new era. All in all I would say it's a very good success.

Completely unnecessary and weirdly hollow
7 November 2023
This is one of the most unfulfilling movie experiences I have had this year. I am by no means a super fan of the insidious series, but have always thought they generally delivered a somewhat interesting ghost story (which are my favorite kind of horror tales). This one simply felt like nothing. There was no urgency, no purpose, and no real direction of the plot. It's just sort of meandered into nothingness. At the end, I didn't deal anything. The spooky parts are there but don't really make sense. You don't really care for the characters anymore (as they aren't very likeable), and overall you get the sense that there is no reason for the story. A sad end to an already middling franchise.

Deeply disturbing
3 July 2023
This is definitely a Slow burn but when the truth comes out I was flabbergasted. A totally bizarre and horrific concept. I don't know if I would call this a horror movie but it sure is deeply disturbing. At times the plot made me a little uncomfortable but also Rebecca Hall gives an incredible performance.

Some people might complain that the movie is a little too slow, or gives you too little, but I found the subdued, simple nature to help enhance how messed up the actual relationship between Hall and Roth is. And the end of the day, this is more a psychological thriller than horror but the power of Hall's performance makes it worth the time.

Makes up for the abomination that was Crystal Skull
30 June 2023
I REALLY enjoyed it, and even loved it at times. A huge improvement over the last one. It definitely is a more mature Indy and a more mature film. It looks darker like more modern cinema, but the story is fun and full of surprises. I will say it drags a little and could have been tightened, but the story is at least coherent compared to Crystal Skull, annd I never didn't enjoy my time in this film. Overall, I had a blast and it was touching. It was nice in a way that it tried to honor rather than capture the magic of the first three movies and really the power of nostalgia. Those movies LOOK and feel different. We've all moved on from there and this movie kind of does too. A good ending.

Also some sexy henchman and sailors in this one.

Wild. Kaleidoscopic. Terrifying. Hilarious. ALWAYS WITH WATER
2 May 2023
There is enough content here to make at least three films. I wonder if that might have served this tour de force better, being split up into 4 or 5 parts like a limited mini series. I really found it to be fantastic, but also terrifying and hilarious. This film creates a world that is so unique, so bizarre, it doesn't matter what is possible or likely or what it means. It's a weird journey across time and space. I'm not sure what it all means but also I don't care. I don't know if we should care?

Like Hereditary and Midsommar this movie builds on familial trauma. It's uncomfortable at times but also more forgiving in other places than those first two. I really dug it. I'm still processing. I have to see again. But Beau...HER HEAD!

Great visuals but terrible script
27 April 2023
I'm perplexed by the high scores on here as this film really fell flat in the story department. There is not one surprise, line of note, or every real hole in this movie. A lot of the lines felt like they were placeholders in the original draft for later insertion (see: "and that is how you princess!"). It was really surprising. It all just feels very basic and not organic at all. Very cliche even. The plot itself is fine but holds no surprises and they even tell you everything that is going to happen before it does. It's very paint by the numbers.

That being said the action sequences look terrific and the "gaming" parts are enjoyable. It's just a shame that they have all of these comedic actors providing voice work and there's no real comedy in the script to lift the story. It's all feel very flat. The one exception is the existential crisis blue star/Kirby figure in the prison who has some bizarrely dark lines. I wasn't against it but compared with how mundane the rest of the script was, it felt out of place. Overall it looks great, but unfortunately the story is VERY bland.

Knocked it out of the park
20 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So how easy is it to boil down a world spanning dozens of books, thousands of pages of lore, and decades long established people, places and things? Somehow this movie does it well and also makes it effortless. There is A LOT of content here and it moves at a very quick pace. There's a lot of action, a lot of journeying, a lot of traps and treasure, and a lot of the humor that really brings the DnD sessions to life. For me the bizarre left field almost improv style comedy was the most successful part of the movie. It made me excited to go sit at my table and have those type of experiences with my fellow players. Had a blast with this movie and really enjoyed it. The references to the game were plentiful but never obnoxious. The fighting in the movie sure doesn't match the way fighting happens in the game but that's a minor quip. I really enjoyed this movie and it looks great!

Way better than it has any right being
1 April 2023
As a 4th film ima franchise I think this movie actually nailed it. It ups the ante with kills, subverts expectations and in the end gives a couple of unexpected twists. All the performances are great, the production values are top notch and the core three from the original trilogy are a real delight to see on screen again. Yeah I really don't have bay faults to deliver here. Ada who submit it works extremely well, as a slasher it's scary and surprising, and as a commentary on meta-ness it works just fine. I would even recommend this as a good place to start the series even. It feels fresh and alive and I couldn't ask for much else.

A somewhat entertaining, if lazy, thriller
28 October 2022
Overall the movie looks pretty good with high production quality but the plot is a little bit frustrating at times. The shift from build up to thriller is really abrupt and the way its handled was a little confusing for me. It sort of breaks the 4th wall without really showing us what happened. I suppose we are supposed to imagine the worst in our heads but to me it came off as a little disingenuous. It also says there were reshoots and I thought I could tell where certain things were inserted/edited strangely. The flow is choppy. Also the main character gives an acceptable performance but overall the plot relies on her poor decision making which to me is a little lazy as well. The villain is pretty good though!

I low key love this. Worst main character ever aside.
7 October 2022
Ok a lot of people hate the main character and want to see her die immediately. That impulse is not wrong. But at the same time... this movie is freaking outrageous. Short, sweet...and sour and spicy and explosive and icy and going to subvert every expectation you could possibly have. I was thoroughly wtf'ed the entire time, and what a ride it is. It Amps the surprises up to 13 and its darkly comic in the sheer amount of messed up stuff that happens. It's frenetic. It's absurd. It's disgusting. It's hilarious. I saw the bad reviews on here and thought eh I'll propbably hate it but will give it a chance. I ended up loving it. Maybe because I thought it would be trash? Here's the thing...it IS trash, but in the best possible way. It's the Showgirls of found footage. To me an instant cult classic. At least it's not slow or boring. 10/10 would trip again.

A wild, insane trip full of energy, gorgeous visuals, and multiple tones
26 September 2022
This film begs to be seen. There is nothing like anywhere else in the world of cinema. Elizabeth Berkeley's performance is a intense, dynamic powerhouse that you can't look away from. The film is glitzy, bright and colorful like a kaleidoscope and the plot twists and tonal shifts often feel the same. The set pieces are strange and beautiful. I don't know. I can see how it's upsetting to some people, but there is a lot going on here and if you go in with an open mind, and expectation that it's not just over the top but it blows up whatever you think the top is, there's a lot to enjoy too. It's not sexy. It's not nice. But that's kind of the point? I can't stop thinking about this movie.

Nearly perfect
17 September 2022
Wow. This little short film is one of the best things I've seen in a long time. And it also took me completely by surprise. It's extremely gory but not gratuitous? The action begins immediately and never lets up. I love a good ship tale and the dynamics of the crew were surprisingly well flushed out for a 20 min short. Superbly condensed action, horror, atmosphere, art direction, voice acting, and twists and turns. I nearly jumped when I saw it was David Fincher. He has notoriously disowned his film Alien 3 but said he wanted this to feel like Alien. I can't help but think this might be his just desserts. I loved it. A+

Very smart with great characters
7 September 2022
This is a great example of "cringe comedy." There are no heroes and Most of them are more unlikeable than likeable, but somehow there is heart, humor, sadness and poignance in the storytelling.

There are only 18 episodes so it does make for a good night of bingeing television, and as a whole the story comes to a full is completion in a satisfying manner. I enjoy this show as a hidden gem and recommend for people who like complex characters.

The acting is great (all three main women are superb) and the situational comedy is uncomfortable but compelling. There are a host of good side characters as well (I like the wild HR lady). I definitely recommend this if you haven't seen it yet!

not sure what the VG fans expect, but this is a pretty good, fleshed out prequel
18 July 2022
This is a complex prequel to the video games that millions know and love. As such, it doesn't have a lot of plot points that are the same from the games (that I've played anyway) but as a precursor that flushes out the Umbrella Company and Racoon CIty, it's pretty good, albeit different that one might expect. All these 1 star reviews are major sourpusses. Take it for what it is.

Jodi Comer shines in a dreary historical drama
17 July 2022
It took me a couple days to get through this movie. The way it looks to me is one of the best aspects. It sort of nostalgically reminds me of Legend (one of my favorite films) in its presentation (beautiful fireside cinematography) and aesthetic (gritty, dark medieval). The best part by far is Jodi Comer. She manages to lift what is a drawn out thrice told tale into something more compelling. I am not a huge Matt Damon/affleck fan and this movie did not help. Adam Dryver is good at being unlikeable. Will I watch again? Ask me in 10 years.

Great LGBTQ+ north woods comedy
14 July 2022
Imagine 'The Great Outdoors' meets Queer Eye/As Folk. If you don't like LGBTQ+ stories, you probably will rate it lower. I prefer this to 'Fire Island' bc it shows gay culture in tandem with straight culture without issues. It's idealized, but I enjoy it.

A technological marvel that sets a new standard for the musical experience
18 June 2022
ABBA Voyage must be seen to be believed. I was skeptical going in but the whole experience was mind blowing in all the best ways. Over a week later and I'm still processing it. I think I would have to see it at least two more times to truly take in all there is to see. I wasn't a huge fan of the animated sequences but they do give a nice breather to make you appreciate when all 4 are on stage. Absolutely worth the trip.

much worse than expected
6 June 2022
I'm really surprised this movie even got made. It's slow to pick up, very unclear as to what actually is happening and is pretty horribly edited with all its freezes, zooms, swipe cuts. I felt like I was watching a student film. It takes about 40 minutes for the movie to actually get where it needs to get going where you feel, ah, this is the story. Once there the jumps between times is so convoluted you really don't know what is where and when. We did not enjoy this film. They story is weak and stretched and the acting isn't great.

Cringey and overly classist
4 June 2022
This movie is a lot. It had some good things going for it but also a ton of cringe, overly stereotypical gay sex tropes. It's also not very nice. I don't think this is doing many favors for the community. It's somewhat entertaining.

Would do better as part of an anthology (like V/H/S)
1 June 2022
Way way way way way too much filler with not enough pay off. The second half is much improved, even scary at times, but I kept thinking that either this should have been flushed out better or been drastically reduced to about 30 min. Ultimately what you get is a waste of time.

23 May 2022
This movie is a mess, but also weirdly compelling. I don't love the animation but it somehow makes it creepier and weirdly nostalgic for early video games. Some of the voice work stinks, but some of it is good. Overall this is a success in tone. It reminds me of Silent HiIl and I don't hate it.
