Veere Di Wedding (2018)
Great Entertainment
Listen, there's a reason why this movie has 71% on Rotten Tomatoes (with objective reviewers) and such a low score on here. If you aren't living in, say, the 1800s, then you'll enjoy this movie.
A lot of people are complaining about the women empowerment. Women empowerment comes in many forms. Yes, it can be educating women and empowering them in the workplace. But it can also be acknowledging that they're also just human beings like anyone else. Oh, are you offended this movie shows women drinking, cursing, and talking about sex? Do you not think some women do this nowadays?
Honestly, I felt this movie was pretty relatable if you're not a prude, not a "all I do is work and have no fun" kinda person, not a "wow I can't watch this with my mom, dad, sister, brother, cousin, aunt, nephew, step-cousin" kinda person.
So, basically, if you're an average person living in the 21st century, you'll be fine.
Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana (2017)
Don't bother with this movie.
Oh boy where to even begin with this one.
The only reason I gave it a 3 is because Rao's acting is top notch, as usual. But I fail to understand why he wasted his talents on such an awful movie. The writing and directing were fine, average, probably above average, now that I think about it. The problem wasn't in the technical aspects.
The biggest issue with this film is that it's sexist. And not in the subtle way that one sees in practically all Bollywood movies and that one turns a blind eye to because overall the movie's message is positive. No. This movie's entire message is so awful.
Woman runs away from a marriage to pursue her career, then is tortured a few years later for making such a decision. Seriously. That is the plot of this movie. And it would've been fine had the genre of the movie been revenge thriller or psychological drama. But this is a romance movie, so of course the main couple end up together in the end.
So essentially the movie promotes dowry and forcing women not to work after marriage. The female lead, who is so strong in the first half, somehow becomes a weakling in the second half. She's tortured and then she runs back to the man torturing her.
For a FAR better movie, I recommend Badrinath ki Dulhania. Same plot, better execution and definitely better message.
