Poker Face (2023)
Great mysteries
This is the perfect show for couch detectives. They show everything that happened but you have to spy out the mistake.
She's not police but she brings justice to every situation. Sometimes the police are called. Other times a person or business is ruined.
Love it. Too many modern detective shows cheat. They don't show some key damning piece of evidence until the final reveal. (Looking at you Death in Paradise.)
Not fast paced, but great acting all around. They intended to capture the feel of the "mystery movie night" on Sunday night in the 1970s with Colimbo, Banacek (my fav), and the others. And they did!
A League of Their Own (2022)
For fanLesbian fans only
I watched until it was revealed that the main three white characters were lesbians. I just don't find that entertaining. I quit there.
The black characters were particularly well acted and developed. They captured the blatant and systemic racism of those days very well. The black parents who "know better" trying to convince their daughter that this is a fruitless quest is heartbreaking. Discrimination has held this country back from our potential since it began. To see this idiocy portrayed so wonderfully and professionally by such excellent actors is good television. Hopefully we will all learn to value all contributions to our society regardless of race.
Flight/Risk (2022)
Whiny, incomplete recap.
This film focuses on family's grief, the whistle blowers who were ignored, and the journey to hold Boeing criminally accountable, which they deserved. (Compare Volkswagen's "clean" diesel exhaust scam.) A strong case is made that the FAA was complicit in the cover up. But the film fails to fully explain exactly what happened. There is no mention of Boeing execs relying on one sensor for this critical piece. (Using two would have required recertification as per FAA rules.)
It bounces back and forth between stories of families recovering and reflecting, the technical explanation, and the legal team. It can be difficult to remember where the previous story left off. So I would call it choppy.
This is not a good addition to the story of this tragedy.
The federal hearings are captured well. And president Trump is not made out to be a fool for a change.
The King's Man (2021)
Big story, lots going on
There was a lot to this story, probably too much. The Duke's conversion from warrior to pacifist and back to warrior, the over-protecting of his son, the loss of his son, the "wizardry" of Rasputin, the meddling with American politics, the causes of WWI, the trench warfare scenes, the Scottish anti-hero, and his James Bond villain mountain top lair assault was a lot to jam in to one movie.
The acting was superb. Is there anything Rhys Ifans (Rasputin) can't do? Fiennes is fantastic as the torn Duke. Gemma and Honsu were perfect.
What drove me crazy were the anachronisms. A U-boat in 1912? That's not how Ferdinand was killed. They had WWII hand grenades? Parachutes from a biplane?
There was just too much for the average movie fan to process. The fight scenes were too long. There were too many "Wait. What? No way." moments.
It was fun but tedious. It would have been a great mini-series.
