Fathers & Daughters (2015)
A Good, Solid Movie
I'm not sure what I was expecting to see when my sister suggested this movie to me. She knows I'm a fan of Russell Crowe, so I tend to like most of his movies. I'll put this movie in that column too.
The movie takes a different approach in dealing with loss.
Good strong performances by Crowe, and surprisingly, by Seyfried, whom I tend NOT to like. But she turned in a strong performance in this movie.
Watch it. You'll be glad you did.
Days of Wine and Roses (1962)
A Hard and Realistic Look at How Alcohol Alters Lives
I'll say at the get-go that I am a fan of Jack Lemmon. He's an incredible actor who really gets inside the characters he plays. Lemmon is Joe Clay an "ad man" who wines and dines clients for the public relations firm that employs him. He's always known how to handle his liquor, but doesn't realize that he falls into the category of an alcoholic. His life is changed when he meets a woman (Lee Remick) who's never had a drink. He convinces her to try a Brandy Alexander, and she does. What follows is a darkened, spiraling look into two lives forever changed by their addiction. Jack Klugman turns in a stellar performance as a sponsor in a new group called "Alcoholics Anonymous."
A movie that hurts to watch at times, but ultimately commands your attention. Lemmon's performance is outstanding and should've earned him an Oscar.
Lizzie (2018)
Please.
Guess they had to make her a lesbian so they could attract more people. No one knows if she was lesbian. This is the writer's embellishment.
The Cutting Edge (1992)
Good Idea for a Movie
The idea behind this movie is good and the actors in this movie are good. But the MUSIC (if you can call it that) is AWWWFUL... truly it's awful. Plus, I wish the skating sequences were shot better. To do that jagged, semi-slo-mo stuff.. is awful and just goes to show that they couldn't do the scenes.
American Psycho (2000)
This Doesn't Even Deserve ONE Star
This is the worst pile of garbage masked as a movie I've ever seen. It's garbage. Not only is the story line moronic, the violence depicted toward women is filthy. The screenplay, the writer, and the director all should be flogged for putting out garbage like this. Plus, the horrific depiction of the main character (played by worthless actor christian bale) is deplorable. Literally stomping a homeless man and his dog to death; who wrote that garbage. This movie should be dropped in a bottomless pit for the garbage it is.
Venom (2018)
Moronic, Stupid Movie
This movie is so stupid I find it hard to put into words. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Brightburn (2019)
Enough With the Dead Animals to Convey Violence
Stupid movie and - audiences are really tired of directors who don't know how to convey violence---except to have animals killed. Grow a brain directors.
Charged: The Eduardo Garcia Story (2017)
Just Didn't Hold My Interest AT ALL
Yawn. I am used to watching documentaries, because they tell real, life stories or they shine a light on issues that need attention. This is about a guy who was hit with a large amount of electricity. This is just one documentary that totally lost my interest.
Foxtrot (2017)
When Will Directors Stop Depicting Animal Cruelty
This movie is G-A-R-B-A-G-E . A father who learns his Israeli soldier son was killed in the line of duty. He lets the family dog in the house. The dog picks up on his grief and reluctantly approaches the grieving man. The man then VICIOUSLY KICKS THE DOG. That's garbage filmmaking. Hey director, next time make a film without animals.
Beauty and the Beast (1987)
One of the Best TV Series of All Time - Even Now
"Beauty and the Beast" was, and remains, TV brilliance. Some TV shows lock themselves into the decade they were created, "Beauty and the Beast" managed to make its time period almost gray. Ron Koslow created a show where love is its foundation. The weekly story lines were entertaining enough, but each episode went back to the love Catherine and Vincent shared. That's what this show was about, the love between two individuals, different as they are. Before I wrote this review I went on ahead and clicked the "spoiler" box because if someone reveals a spoiler without warning people that reviewer will be forever blacklisted. However, I don't really give away any spoilers. One review I just read said that we never truly learn how Vincent became the way he is. I have to disagree with that-- I believe we do learn how he came to be the way he is. It's deep into the series - but is explained by the sinister character Paracelcus and is better explained by Father because Paracelcus was a devious liar and so viewers were led to believe that he lied. However, Father explains it. The main character in this wonderful series is, of course, Catherine. She is truly an amazing and gifted actress. Her emotions, when called for in the scripts are raw and amazingly believable. She truly loved Vincent. There is one particular episode that is close to my heart and it's the episode titled "A Happy Life," it is so beautifully written and Linda Hamilton should have received an Emmy award for it. There is also beautiful classical music sprinkled throughout the series that Catherine and Vincent loved, which also lends to the series being evergreen. The show is very emotionally fulfilling and Ron Koslow had a group of talented writers who managed to create stories that were painful/awful in their humanity/beautiful in their scope. The words the writers created for Vincent's character always allowed him to give sage advice without being preachy. Sure, it's a fantasy world, but this is what GOOD television should be about, not the reality garbage that dominates the airwaves now. TV shows should make us feel good in our hearts, they should make us think, even fantasize, and that's exactly what the beautiful series does. I received the complete series as a gift, and now I will always treasure it. The series set also allows the viewer to occasionally listen to some commentary by Vincent's Ron Perlman and Catherine's Linda Hamilton, they're short, informative and a very nice treat for real fans of this TV show.
My Boyfriends' Dogs (2014)
A Nice 2-Hour Diversion
Erika Christensen stars as a high school teacher eager to meet Mr. Right, but her search proves futile as she realizes her choices are not the best. The movie opens with Christensen running through the rain with three dogs in tow. She comes upon a small diner that just closed and-- looking pathetic and drenched, the owners allow her in. The movie is told through her recounting of how she came to the diner dressed in a wedding gown. Christensen is a lovely actress who fits this role perfectly. Central to the story are some cute little dogs, always a nice addition to any movie. Shot in a small idyllic town somewhere in California, this movie was actually filmed somewhere in Canada (Toronto likely, or Vancouver) and is filled with several fresh Canadian faces. This is a nice 2-hour diversion for the romantic at heart.
Wake of Death (2004)
Not your average Van Damme move
Anyone who's a fan of Belgium actor Jean Claude knows what kind of action to expect in one of his movies. Well, you CAN expect lots of action in "Wake of Death"--but with a twist. This particular movie is one of the most violent Van Damme movie's to date. Made in 2004, "Wake of Death" is Jean Claude's most recent film. He's aging, but very nicely. Still very much in tip top shape. He plays a working man looking to spend more time with his family. When his wife, who works for U-S immigration brings home a young Chinese immigrant, her father comes looking for her in the U-S. Lots and lots of violence abounds in this very action packed flick. Van Damme fan or no Van Damme fan--this is a good movie.
