Pixel Theory (2013)
Predicts Stable Diffusion and AI generated Art 10 years earlier
These days, especially after the public release of stable diffusion sees a lot of questions and discussions around this technology so this movie was a surprise to find since it already touches some of these points.
I just click randomly this movie from 2013 on netflix, no clue what it was about. But already from the first moments it is interesting since the generator at the start is what is more or less a broader idea. Or the idea that all possible combinations of a certain string can be generated and within that set of combinations will be all books ever written and all music and all possible things we can ever see or hear (since it are 0 and 1s). But what does that mean ?
So it touches a lot of broader concepts which makes it an interesting movie.
Lost (2004)
The first show of the new generation
This series was the first one of the new type of series where you would see it together with you wife and viewed episode after episode as well as go online to discuss the mythology on a thriving online community in the emerging social internet.
The end was however not satisfying.
Cinderella (2021)
Why is it a bad movie?
I think they should warn viewers that this movie is for 8 year old max. I think kids really enjoy this movie.
I think that is the heart of the problem with this movie. It has newspaper reviews etc... and so a grown up audience goes watch it. There are higher expectations than a kids movie.
But the movie is just some more or less extreme famous cliche popsongs around Cinderella without any intelligence around it. The songs don't fit the story and there is no attempt made to at all add basically anything else than some people singing those songs in an awkward way.
But kids will like it.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Best Star Trek Series until now
Star Trek is an integrated part of many lives so I did have high expectations to begin with. The expectation has been met and more
Ignore some of the negative comments of people. I think they simply don't understand in many ways or they are affected by the sign of our times of a growing number of people who live their lives based on a story that challenges the idea of a civilization with a religion based on a fixed ancient idea of doom and hell which sees wars and destruction as only solution versus the idea of star trek which is in line with science and the extrapolation that its very possible that life out there is artificial not human. Probably in a mix with people who are stuck in the past and don't see that also television series are part of the time and environment they were created in comparable to comics in the 80's (simpler, less complex storylines, hero, enemy, done) and comics nowadays which have multiple storylines, deep complexity and much more complexity and more realistic characters which are "real", not a disney princess. They simply can not handle more complex stories that is the core thing. It needs to be simple therefore references to e.g. Orville. Their brains can not handle stories like this. They are Romulans: stuck with a fixed vision, unable to change and therefore unable to undertand the message of Picard.
It has multiple layers of story to think about. Both from personnel perspective as overall angles. The acting is above par. The eye for detail is astonishing. The usage of symbols is smart and it catches the essence of star trek perfectly. Better than any series around at the moment.
Apart from this it was uber-fantastic to finally not see the actors on stage during a con event answering questions but they are actually on screen... cool, as a gift to loyal fans, with their personalities and in a great story with a gazillion references to the past. And this intermingles with the experience: on the stage of the con we heard that the makeup of data was irritating and the annoying lenses to wear. But the cast did it here. Instant recognition and coolness.
The main idea behind the story is overall interesting in line with Nasa's expectation of intelligent life in the universe and it explores what the implications are of this. Because probably.... it is so... I'm anxious to know more about this hidden ai in a hidden dimensions and it has of course resemblences with Asimov's Foundation and the "ending of that": where are now all the "robots". Only a different twist. Who knows ... now that we are in the "caves of steel" at home .. maybe star trek in the end... will merge with the Asimov universe and Picard will meet R. Daneel Olivaw who left 8 suns in a certain order behind.
At the same time it intertwingels with the theme of AI as probably this has never been put on screen as good as in this series. Since everyone studying AI will have "data" in the back of their minds. So it will have lasting impact and probably even on the conscious AI's that we WILL one day create. Will they watch this series and take away the message? Will humanity follow the views as depicted in Terminator Judgement Day or will they follow the views as Picard laid them out.
And at the same time it has its own viewpoint on what will happen when we are able to copy our brain over to a virtual environment. But a much star trek answer than e.g. in Black Mirrors San Junipero. Which is another interesting viewpoint and a novel one. I really like the element of choice here and describing life and what it means and the conflict with e.g. a future where we will copy our brain in a virtual environment and live forever in a thousand different copies and environments. What will it mean.
The acting is formidable, each of characters is well worked out and you are drawn in each character's reasoning and a part of their why they are what they are. You can replace yourself in each character and auto start thinking on why, who, what and how. There are dramatic moments of a drug addict mother who has a son wishes to no longer see her to moments to laugh about.
The scenes are put together in an incredible detail and a a lot of love for details including e.g. the language of the butterlflies by someone who passed away and the butterflies appearing later to signify and tell a butterfly storyline.
The borg's artifact, the way seven fits in this (and way cool to see her as a dramatic hero still fighting for the good in difficult conditions) is also worked out very well and it fits and touches the overall theme from yet another angle which is pretty smart and amazing that all of this fits it 10 episodes. Which adds to the overall feeling that nothing is rushed. Everything is worked out well, in details and a "logical" puzzle piece, as opposed to many other stories.
The ending is superb, smart and all the lines click together and... it gives a new crew so I hope there will be many more new adventures with this crew. I'm going to watch this series many times more.
The Flash: Into the Void (2019)
Legendary Queen Minute
The Queen minute ( "I have been saving this for the right moment since day 1") is probably the most epic minute of the complete series therefore 10 stars.
An Honest Liar (2014)
Everybody must see this movie
Without detailing into spoilers,
This movie provided enough interesting lessons spanning much wider than just a movie. I think it's pretty unique in its underlying message, at least I don't know of any other movies with these lines underneath. I may even fall in a separate category.
For scientists this movie will show you that there are other variables besides "controlled conditions" and "a bunch of references" which you should be taken into account, when performing tests with humans: humans may deliberately fraud your research. As far as I remember that was never a topic or even a consideration during classes on how to conduct controlled experiments.
It also taught me that, no matter how smart you are, people will always be able to fool you. So you do need strict conditions and help of trained professionals when performing tests or experiments in this area.
The movie also taught me that even if you put the plain proof that people are frauds in front of people, it is no use. Apparently people disregard the truth even with evidence and for reasons I can't yet comprehend, donate gazillion of dollars to frauds even with recorded proofs of fraudulent behavior.
The movie made me aware that knowing the truth is one thing but assuming other people are interested in the truth is another thing.
Apart from these and other pretty unique things the movie lets you think of ... it gives an insight in the career of Randi. I was not completely aware of his complete career, which was an eye opener.
I also did not know how broad his operations stretched, the determination during the 2 years of paranormal research was absolutely stunning.
If I would have to categorize the movie in my DVD/Blu-Ray collection I would create a separate drawer "Truth".
